Confused about NY unemployment supplement ending but system says I've exhausted benefits already?

So I've been receiving my regular unemployment payment plus that extra $300 supplement since February. I thought this was supposed to continue until September 4th, but when I logged in yesterday to certify, the system told me I've exhausted all my benefits? I'm really confused because I was counting on those payments through September. I did some research and found the federal supplement (I think it's called FPUC?) is definitely supposed to run until early September. Has anyone else gotten this message? I tried calling the NY unemployment office but couldn't get through to anyone. I've been unemployed since December when our restaurant closed, and I really need these benefits for another month until I start my new job in October. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Happened to me too last week! I was receiving the $300 plus my regular benefits (about $435) since January, then suddenly got that message. Called them like 20 times with no luck. Finally figured out that my REGULAR benefits ran out (the state portion), but the federal supplement can't be paid if you're not getting the base benefit. Super frustrating communication from them tbh.

Wait so does that mean I'm just done? Even though the federal program runs till September?? That seems so wrong...

That's what I thought too! But apparently you can't get the $300 by itself. You need to be qualifying for some kind of base unemployment benefit. Really messed up how they don't explain this clearly anywhere 🤬

Yep, the $300 is a supplement, not a standalone benefit. If your regular UI is exhausted, you need to see if u qualify for an extension program.

I was totally stuck in this same situation, couldn't get anyone on the phone for weeks. Finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they got me a callback from a real unemployment agent within 2 hours. The agent explained I needed to apply for an extension since my regular benefits expired. Talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast - worth checking out if you're desperate. They have a video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

This sounds interesting... did you actually get your benefits fixed after using this?

Yeah! The agent walked me through applying for the extension right on the call. Got my payments back on track within the week. It was actually my roommate who told me about it after she used it too.

another service trying to profit off desperate ppl... does this actually work or is it just taking advantage?

I get the skepticism but it literally just helps you skip the phone queue. The unemployment office is impossible to reach otherwise. It was the only way I could talk to a live agent after trying for weeks.

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual unemployment system workaround that never delivers?

It worked for me and several ppl I know. You still talk directly to the actual unemployment office agents - Claimyr just handles the hold time and gets you the callback.

Sounds like you exhausted your regular UI benefits. You need to apply for an extension program - possibly PEUC. The $300 supplement only gets paid if you're receiving some kind of base unemployment benefit. The NY unemployment website is totally unclear about this stuff, classic government communication 🙄

Thank you for explaining this! Do I need to call to apply for PEUC or can I do it online?

You should be able to do it online, but honestly the website is so glitchy that calling is usualy more reliable. Good luck getting through tho lol

Here's what's happening with the NY unemployment system right now (I work with a community assistance program that helps people navigate these issues): Regular UI benefits typically last 26 weeks. After that, you need to transition to an extension program like PEUC. The extra $300 (Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation) does end September 4th, but you can only receive it if you're getting some base unemployment benefit. You should: 1) Check if you've received UI for approximately 26 weeks (6 months) 2) Look for any messages in your online account about applying for extensions 3) If there's nothing online, you MUST call them - despite how frustrating it is Many people have success using claimyr.com to get through to an agent quickly rather than calling hundreds of times. The unemployment office should automatically transition you to an extension, but their system often fails to do this properly. Hope this helps!

Thank you so much for this detailed explanation! Yes, it's been about 8 months since I started UI, so that makes sense. I'll try calling tomorrow.

This is super helpful info. I've been on hold with them for 3+ hours today with no luck 😫

Glad it helps! And yeah, the phone system is completely overwhelmed. That's why many people end up using services like Claimyr - the hold times are ridiculous right now.

This EXACT thing happened to me! The message is super misleading. What it means is your regular UI benefits expired, NOT that all possible benefits are exhausted. You should be eligible for PEUC which will continue until Sept 4 along with the $300 supplement. But you have to apply for it - the system doesn't automatically switch you over.

NY unemployment system is such a joke. They can't even communicate properly about how benefits work or when they end. I've been through this exact situation and spent WEEKS trying to figure it out, calling endlessly. 😤 My advice: keep calling until you get a human who can help you apply for the extension.

Truuuuuuuth. The whole system is designed to frustrate people into giving up.

I literally called 87 times in one day before giving up. Their phone system is the definition of insanity.

The $300 supplement (FPUC) does end Sept 4, but you need to be getting some kind of base unemployment benefit to receive it. The "exhausted benefits" message is about your regular UI, which typically lasts 26 weeks. You need to apply for PEUC now, which is the extension program.

Oh man I feel for you. When I saw that "exhausted benefits" message I had a full panic attack. Took me days to get through to someone. If you want to avoid the phone hell, check out claimyr.com - thats how i finally got my issue resolved. The agent explained I needed to file for an extension which wasn't clear AT ALL from their website.

Was it complicated to apply for the extension? I'm worried I'll mess something up and lose everything.

Not really complicated, but you def need to talk to an agent. They'll walk you through it. The form itself is pretty straightforward.

lmao welcome to NY unemployment, where nothing makes sense and the rules are made up 🤡 But for real, you need to apply for PEUC extension. The system should have done this automatically but it's broken af. You gotta call and talk to someone.

This is sucha common issue with ny unemployment right now! I went through it last month. Your regular UI benefits expired (usually after 26 weeks), and you need to switch to the extension program. The $300 federal supplement continues until Sept 4, but only if youre getting some form of base unemployment.
