Do I need to start a new claim or can I keep claiming after the $300 extra ended in NY unemployment?

So I've been collecting unemployment since April 2023 after my restaurant closed down permanently. I was getting my regular benefit amount plus the extra $300 federal boost each week. I just noticed that starting last week, I only got my regular amount ($247) without the extra $300. Im super confused about what's happening. Does this mean the federal supplement is over? Do I need to file a whole new claim or just keep certifying weekly like normal to get my base amount? I checked the ny unemployment website but couldn't find anything specific about this. Anyone else experiencing this and know what's going on?

Yeah the $300 federal boost is done. Ended September 5. You just keep certifying like normal to get your regular state benefit. Nothing changes with your claim process.

Thanks! I was stressing out thinking I did something wrong or missed some paperwork.

yep, welcome to poverty wages. the govt decided we don't need help anymore 🙄

I was in the same boat, couldn't get thru to anyone at unemployment to explain what was happening. Finally found this service called claimyr.com that connected me with an actual human at NY unemployment. It was the best money I spent to get clarity on my claim. They confirmed exactly what happened - the federal supplement ended but my regular benefits continue. Saved me hours of stress and waiting. You can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

does this actually work? i've been trying to reach someone for 3 weeks...

0 coins

Absolutely. I was skeptical too but it connected me within like 45 minutes when I had been trying for days. They just dial for you and call when someone picks up.

seems sketchy... how does it even work? they just call for you?

0 coins

Yeah basically they have some tech that keeps dialing and holds your place in line, then calls you when a real person answers. Saved me from losing my mind on hold music lol. Just check out claimyr.com

wait so this isnt some scam? seems 2 good 2 be true tbh

Not a scam at all. It's just a service that waits on hold for you. My claim was stuck for weeks and talking to an agent fixed it in minutes once I got through. Worth every penny considering how much back pay I was owed.

Keep certifying! The $300 boost from FPUC has ended, but your regular state benefits continue. There are no new federal extensions right now. Don't submit a new claim unless your benefit year has ended.

The federal $300 was always temporary, congress didnt renew it. Keep claiming like normal for your base benefit. If your benefit year ends (usually 12 months from when you first applied) THEN you need to file a new claim.

Yup, and most states including NY are back to the regular work search requirements too. Make sure ur documenting tht stuff or they can cut u off

0 coins

What counts as work search activities? I've been applying to like 3 places a week, is that enough?

0 coins

NY requires 3 work search activities per week so you should be good. Just keep documentation of where you applied.

JUST KEEP CERTIFYING!! 👏👏 You don't need to file a new claim. The feds cut off the extra $300 but your regular NY unemployment continues. It suuuuucks but that's where we are 😩

I'm in the same boat...got laid off in February, was getting the federal supplement on top of my regular benefits, and now just getting the base amount. I talked to someone at unemployment (took DAYS of calling) and they confirmed the federal part is over but the regular benefits continue until your benefit year ends.

how tf did you actually get someone on the phone??? i've been trying for weeks!

Honestly it was pure luck. Called at exactly 8:00am and still waited 2 hours. I've heard some people having good results with that claimyr service though.

Everyone in this thread is correct - the $300 boost ended 9/5. All the pandemic-related extra programs are done. Regular UI continues if you still have weeks left in your benefit year. Just keep certifying weekly.

Man, this is gonna hit so many families hard. My landlord is already asking when I can pay full rent again 🥺

Listen up everyone dealing with NY unemployment issues right now. I've been through this whole nightmare system for the past 9 months and here's what you need to know: - The $300 FPUC federal supplement officially ended Sept 5th nationwide. This is not coming back without new legislation - Your regular state unemployment benefits continue as normal if you still have weeks remaining - You DO NOT file a new claim until your benefit year ends (check your payment history for the "effective date" and add 12 months) - Continue certifying weekly without interruption - NY has returned to normal work search requirements (3 activities per week) - If you have ANY issues with your claim or need answers, FORGET trying to reach someone through normal channels Honestly the most helpful thing I found was using claimyr.com to get through to a representative. They basically wait on hold for you and call when someone picks up. Talking to a live agent is the ONLY way to resolve most issues - the website and automated system are useless for anything complicated. Don't waste weeks trying to get answers like I did. Get someone on the phone who can actually help.

Yeah I wasted literal MONTHS trying to call before I found claimyr. Wish I'd known about it sooner.

i'm going thru the same exact thing rn. restaurant worker, got my last payment with the $300 on 9/5, then just the regular amount after. called unemployment and they confirmed all the federal extra $$ programs ended, but we can keep claiming our regular state amount.

Different programs ended at different times. The $300 FPUC boost ended 9/5. If you were on regular UI, you keep getting your base amount. If you were on PUA or PEUC, that all ended too. Most people are SOL now unless Congress does something.

Congress ain't doing NOTHING. They don't care about us regular folks 🤷‍♀️

facts. we're on our own now.

It depends what kind of claim you're on. The federal $300 supplement is definitely over. But if ur on regular UI you keep getting your base amount til your benefit year ends. If ur on PEUC or PUA those programs ended completely.

0 coins

Just 2 clarify - the $300 ended, the extended weeks programs ended, but REGULAR unemployment continues if ur still in ur benefit year. Just keep certifying! No need to refile unless specifically told to on the website.

FYI the New York unemployment site is absolute TRASH at explaining any of this. It's like they don't want us to understand what's happening. Keep certifying weekly and you'll get your regular amount minus the $300.

0 coins

omg yes!!! why don't they just put a big notice on the main page explaining all this??? not everyone watches the news!

0 coins

because they WANT people to miss weeks or mess up their claims 👀 fewer people to pay!

0 coins

This whole system is designed to confuse people to the point they give up. Keep claiming your regular benefits and document EVERYTHING in case they try to come after you later saying you shouldn't have been claiming.

All the pandemic extra $ is gone. UI just went back to what it was before - your regular weekly benefit amount. Keep certifying like normal. Nothing else changes.
