Are NY unemployment benefits completely ending after the $300 bonus expires?
I've been receiving unemployment since I got laid off from my restaurant job in February. I know the extra $300 per week is ending in September, but I'm confused about what happens after that. Does this mean all our unemployment benefits are completely stopping? Or will we still get the regular base amount? I'm super worried because I'm still looking for work and have rent due. My current weekly benefit rate is $424 before the extra $300. Anyone know what's happening with NY unemployment after the federal supplement ends?

No, only the $300 federal supplement is ending. Your regular state benefit amount will continue as long as you're eligible and have benefit weeks remaining. You'll just get your base rate (the $424) without the extra federal money.

•Thanks so much, that's a huge relief! I was stressing thinking everything would just stop suddenly.

•But isnt there a limit to how many weeks you can claim? Like 26 weeks or something? So you might still run out if you've been on it for awhile...

•Yeah, there is a limit to regular UI. If you've been claiming since February, you should check your remaining balance and weeks on your account.

After struggling with ny unemployment for weeks and not being able to reach anyone, I finally tried this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) which got me connected to an actual agent. Talking to someone directly was the best money I spent to get my benefits sorted quickly. They even have a video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? The unemployment line has been impossible for months

•Yeah it worked for me! I was super skeptical too but I was desperate after trying to call for 3 weeks straight. Got connected to an agent in about 45 mins.

•hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different? 🤔

•It just calls for you and stays on hold so you don't have to. When someone actually picks up, it calls your phone. Saved me hours of listening to that awful hold music.

I called unemployment last week and they told me that regular benefits continue after the $300 ends, but ONLY if you still have weeks left in your benefit year and haven't exhausted your maximum amount. You might want to check both of those things in your online account.

The whole system is a mess tbh. I've been on unemployment since January and even the agents dont know whats going on half the time. One tells you one thing, another tells you something completly different. My advice is to start applying EVERYWHERE even places you wouldn't normally consider. Its going to be a bloodbath when all these benefits start dropping off.

Here's what you need to know about NY unemployment after the federal programs end: The $300 FPUC supplement ends September 6th. Regular UI continues after that date if: - You still have weeks remaining in your benefit year - You haven't exhausted your maximum benefit amount - You're still certifying weekly - You're still meeting job search requirements If you've been on UI since February, you should have several months left on your benefit year, but check your exact dates in your online account. The DOL has been terrible at communicating all this. I found using claimyr.com was the only way I could actually reach someone to get accurate information about my claim. I had been trying to call for weeks before using it. Also, make sure you're documenting all your work search activities each week - they've been reviewing those more strictly lately and some people are getting hit with overpayment notices for not keeping proper records.

•This is incredibly helpful! Thank you for breaking it down so clearly. I'm going to check my benefit year dates now.

•how many work search activities are actually required each week? I've been doing at least 3 but heard different things.

•NY requires 3 work search activities per week. But don't just list job applications - things like updating your resume, attending job fairs, and networking count too. Document EVERYTHING.

Does anyone know if we'll get advanced notice before our benefits end or do they just cut you off? My anxiety about this is through the roof rn 😫

•They're supposed to send a letter but the last time they were supposed to notify me about something I never got it. Check your online account regularly!

•I was in the exact same situation. Finally used claimyr.com and it got me through to someone who fixed everything in one call. Worth every penny.

I've been on unemployment since last april and never had issues until recently. Now my payments are randomly on hold and I cant reach anyone. This system is designed to fail us 🤬

Quick tip: Save as much of that $300 weekly boost as you possibly can before it ends. I've been putting half of mine aside because I know things are gonna get tight.

i just got a letter saying my benefit year is ending in october. do i need to reapply or does it automatically continue?

Savannah Glover
•You have to reapply. They won't do it automatically. Don't wait until the last minute either, do it a couple weeks before.

•Make sure you have all your employment info from the past 18 months ready when you reapply. That tripped me up.

Whats the point of even having unemployment if you cant get through to anyone when theres a problem? its been 3 weeks of calling nonstop. THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN!

•Try calling exactly at 8:00am when they open or 5 minutes before they close. Worked for me twice.

Has anyone else noticed that the DOL website is terribly outdated with conflicting info? The FAQ page still has pandemic info from 2020 that doesn't even apply anymore.

•YES! And they keep sending emails with broken links 🙄

Hot take: they're making the system confusing on purpose so people give up trying to collect what they're owed. Classic govt tactic.

•100% this. They save money every time someone gets frustrated and stops claiming.

•Yup. My friend works for the state (not DOL) and says there's internal pressure to reduce unemployment numbers by any means necessary.

•I think you have a year to claim back pay but don't quote me on that. Def keep trying to reach them.

I missed one week of certifying because I was in the hospital. Anyone know if I can still claim that week somehow? The website won't let me backdate.

James Maki
•You have to call and speak to a rep to backdate a certification. They can do it if you have a good reason (and hospital is definitely a good reason).

•Same happened to me. Only way to fix is to talk to someone. I used claimyr.com to get through after 2 weeks of failed calls. They fixed it immediately.

I'm in a similar boat - been on unemployment since March and really worried about what happens when the $300 ends. Reading through all these comments is both helpful and terrifying! Sounds like the regular benefits should continue but I'm definitely going to check my benefit year and remaining weeks ASAP. Also bookmarking that claimyr service since it seems like half the people here have had success with it when the regular phone lines fail. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences - this community has been way more helpful than the actual DOL website! 🙏
