When will my NY unemployment $300 extra payments end if my effective days show zero?

I was recently let go from my position as a regional sales manager when our company website crashed and they decided to close the whole operation. Been searching for a new job for the past 2 months but struggling to find anything that pays even 70% of what I was making before. I'm wondering about the timeline for the extra $300 weekly payments on top of regular unemployment. I've been checking my account and my effective days shows 0 which is confusing me. I've tried reading through the ny unemployment website but getting different answers. Has anyone dealt with this situation? Will my benefits just suddenly stop or will I get some kind of notice?

Isaac Wright

The zero effective days means you've used up your regular UI benefits. You should be automatically enrolled in the extended benefits program which still includes the $300 boost until sept 6th, unless NY decides to opt out early like some other states. Double check your payment history to see if its switched to 'extended benefits' status.

thanks for the clarification! I didnt know what the zero meant. I'll check my payment history now and look for that extended benefits status.

yea but some ppl are reporting the system is glitchy when transitioning to extended benefits. might need to call to make sure its processing correctly.

True, the system has been mega buggy. took my sister 3 weeks of payments to show up after her regular UI ran out.

I was stuck in the same exact situation last month. Spent literal DAYS trying to call ny unemployment with no luck. Finally tried this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected with an actual person at unemployment in under an hour. Talking to the agent got my benefits sorted out immediately - turns out my account needed to be manually switched to extended benefits. Absolutely the best money I've spent to get my payments flowing again! Check out their explainer: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Totally works. I was skeptical too but was desperate after trying for 2 weeks straight. They basically stay on hold for you then call you when an agent picks up. Saved me hours of frustration.

another day another 'miracle solution' 🙄 has anyone else tried this claimyr thing or just this one random person?

i used it last week after seeing it mentioned here. got through to someone who fixed my claim that was pending for over a month. wish id known about it sooner tbh

It's not a miracle solution, just a service that automates the hold process. You still have to talk to the unemployment agent yourself, they just connect you. Worked for me when nothing else did 🤷‍♂️

The 300 extra is federally funded and scheduled to end september 6 across all states, unless your state opts out early (ny hasnt announced anything like that). Your regular benefit amount and weeks depends on your work history, but most people get 26 weeks, and then can qualify for extended benefits after.

I almost had the same issue. Once regular UI runs out, you should get an email about PEUC (the extended benefits). If u dont get that email within a week of hitting 0 days, CALL THEM. dont wait like i did cuz there was a glitch in my account and i missed 3 weeks of payments cuz the system didnt auto-enroll me like it was supposed to.

Same here! System glitched when my regular benefits ran out and didnt automatically put me on PEUC. Had to call literally 50+ times before getting through.

This is exactly what im worried about happening. Did you ever get those missing weeks paid to you?

0 coins

-

26d

Ruby Knight

Yeah but took almost a month of back and forth. They had to do what they call a "backdate request" for the missing weeks. Such a headache.

The whole system is fucked. I was a restaurant manager making decent $ before covid, now on unemployment with this pathetic $300 extra which barely covers rent. And they make it impossible to actually talk to someone when there's a problem. The entire ny unemployment system needs to be rebuilt from scratch.

Preach! 👏 Im so sick of this broken ass system. Been on hold 4 hours today already.

it's almost like they WANT it to be difficult so people give up... 🤔

Anyone know if the extra 300 is getting extended past september? Ive heard rumors but nothing concrete. Still cant find a job that pays what i was making and im getting worried.

No chance. Biden administration already said its ending sept 6 period.

They said the same thing about the eviction moratorium and then extended it again when it got close to the deadline. Dont count it out yet.

Here's what you need to know about NY unemployment right now: 1) The $300 federal supplement continues until Sept 6, 2021 unless something changes (NY has not indicated they'll end early like some red states) 2) Zero effective days typically means you've exhausted regular UI benefits, but should be automatically placed on PEUC (extended benefits) 3) HOWEVER - the system often fails to automatically transition people, causing payments to stop suddenly 4) You NEED to be proactive! Don't wait for the system to fix itself 5) If you notice ANY gap in payments, you must contact them immediately 6) Calling is nearly impossible using the regular number - I suggest using claimyr.com which will get you through to a live agent (worked for me after 2 weeks of failed calling) 7) Make sure to certify EVERY week even if you think your benefits are exhausted 8) Document EVERYTHING - payment history, emails, screenshots 9) If your application switches to PEUC, your effective days will reset to a new number The system is incredibly frustrating but you can navigate it with persistence and the right approach. Don't give up - you're entitled to these benefits!

This is incredibly helpful, thank you for taking the time to spell it all out! I'll definitely be proactive instead of waiting.

anyone else notice the website is down like every other day for "maintenance"? always seems to happen when im trying to check on my claim status. so frustrating.

Lucas Parker

YES! And it's always during peak hours when most people would be checking. It's like they're trying to reduce traffic by making it inaccessible 🤦‍♀️

just so you know, employers are absolutely taking advantage of the unemployment situation to offer lower wages. I was making 65k as a marketing director, best offer I've gotten in 3 months of searching is 42k for the SAME job responsibilities. Don't settle.

0 coins

-

Yara Campbell

This is exactly what I'm seeing too. Every offer is WAY below market rate compared to pre-pandemic. It's insulting.

Have you tried calling the ny unemployment office? LMAO jk that's impossible. Serious answer: the extra $300 ends for everyone on Sept 6. Your 0 effective days means you've used up your initial UI claim, so you need to make sure you're transitioned to extended benefits.

Guys I dont even have enough money for rent this month and my claim is "pending" with no updates for 3 weeks. I'm legit aboutta be homeless and the unemployment office doesn't even answer the phone. I've called over 200 times this week.

Have you tried claimyr.com? It's the only way I got through after weeks of trying. They connect you directly with an agent.

Friendly reminder to everyone: DOCUMENT EVERYTHING. Save screenshots of your payment history, claim status, emails, etc. NY unemployment has been known to make "errors" that you'll need proof to dispute later.

just went thru this. you need to call them asap. zero effective days means ur regular benefits are done but u should be automatically moved to extended benefits. sometimes the computer messes up the transition tho. took me 3 weeks of calling everyday to finally get someone who fixed it in 5 minutes lol. so stupid.

-

Yara Campbell

3 weeks of calling?? That's crazy. Did you get back paid for the weeks you missed while trying to get through?

0 coins

-

Kaitlyn Jenkins

yeah eventually but it was another headache. had to file what they call a "backdated certification request" for each missing week.

If your effective days are at 0, you should have gotten a docusign email to fill out for the extended benefits. Check your spam folder. If you didn't get that email, your only option is to call. I know it sucks but that's the system we're dealing with.

Thanks - just checked spam and nothing there. Guess I'll have to try calling.

my brother works for nysdol (not saying this to brag, just giving context). he says they're completely overwhelmed and the computer system is from like 1990. he said most issues require manual intervention from an agent but they're so backlogged its taking weeks to help everyone. his advice is to keep certifying every week even if you think you're not getting paid, and to call as early in the morning as possible.

omg I litterally thought I was the only one dealing with this!! my effective days went to 0 two weeks ago and then my payments just stopped completely. No notification or anything. I called 47 times yesterday (yes I counted) and couldn't get through to anyone. This is so frustrating!
