How much should I expect from NY unemployment weekly benefits?
I lost my job last month after our company went through a major downsizing. Filed for unemployment benefits 3 weeks ago and finally got approval yesterday. I was making about $58,000 a year at my marketing job, but I'm confused about how much I'll actually get each week. The approval letter mentions a weekly benefit amount but doesn't explain how they calculated it. Does anyone know how NY unemployment figures out the weekly payment? I've heard different things from different people - some say it's 50% of your salary up to a maximum, others say it depends on your highest quarter earnings. Just trying to budget properly since rent in Queens isn't exactly cheap. Also, how long does it typically take for the first payment to come through after approval? Thanks for any help.

The max benefit amount in NY is $504 per week. They calculate it based on your highest paid quarter in your base period (which is usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before you filed). It's approximately 1/26 of your highest quarter wages up to that maximum. So with your salary, you're probably getting close to the max.

•Thanks for explaining. That makes sense now - they were looking at my Q4 earnings from last year which had a bonus in it. I guess that's why my amount is near the max.

•Just want to point out the first payment usually takes 2-3 weeks after approval in my experience. Make sure you're doing your weekly certifications!

I was in your exact situation back in February. Couldnt get answers on the website and it was driving me crazy. After days of trying to call I used this service called claimyr.com that got me a callback from a real agent. Talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast - explained exactly how my benefit was calculated and when I'd get paid. Check out their info video: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

•No catch! Just a service that calls for you and stays on hold. Then connects you when there's a live agent. Saved me like 3 hours of hold time.

•Yep, I did and it actually worked. Got my questions answered in one call instead of spending days trying to get through.

•wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS?

•It works! They just automate the calling and holding part. When an agent picks up, they connect you. Simple but effective.

With ur salary ($58k) you should get pretty close to the maximum. I was making $62k when I filed and got $498 weekly. After taxes it comes out to around $448 deposited each week. First payment took 10 days after approval for me.

The benefit rate is roughly 50% of your average weekly wage, calculated from your highest quarter in the base period, up to the $504 cap. Given your salary was $58k, you're probably getting between $490-504/week. First payment typically arrives 2-3 weeks after approval, but make sure you're doing your weekly certifications (every Sunday!!) or you won't get paid.

•This!!! The weekly certifications are SUPER important. I missed one week and it took forever to get that payment. Set a reminder on your phone for Sunday mornings.

•Thanks for the reminder about weekly certifications. I got an email about that but wasn't sure how important the timing was.

Something nobody mentioned yet: benefits are subject to federal income tax (and state if you dont live in NY) so make sure u select to have taxes withheld unless u want a tax surprise later 😮

•Yuuup I made this mistake. Got hit with a $1200 tax bill cause I didn't withhold anything. BIG REGRETS.

Look, I'll be honest - the NY unemployment system is a total disaster. Been on it twice in three years. Here's what you need to know: 1) With your income, you'll likely get close to the maximum $504/week 2) First payment SHOULD come within 2 weeks but often takes longer 3) If anything goes wrong (and something always does), good luck getting someone on the phone 4) Set up direct deposit immediately if you haven't already - the debit card option is horrible 5) Document EVERYTHING - take screenshots, note dates/times of calls The only way I actually got my issues resolved was using claimyr.com when I needed to speak to someone. Best money I ever spent after sitting on hold for literally 7+ hours across 3 days. They connected me to an actual human at NY unemployment who fixed my claim in 10 minutes. Oh and one more thing - don't miss your weekly certifications on Sunday or you'll regret it.

•Wow thanks for the detailed response. I just checked and I'm getting $502 weekly. I did set up direct deposit but good call on documenting everything. Is claimyr really worth it?

•100% worth it IF you need to speak to someone. If your claim is running smoothly, probably don't need it. But if you hit any issues, it's literally the only way to get through without wasting days.

•I second this. Used Claimyr when my account got frozen randomly. Got through to an agent in under an hour instead of days of trying.

The system is a joke. I got $400 a week making $52k but my roommate got $504 making $60k. Makes no sense how they calculate it tbh.

Hey just a heads up that if ur making around 58K, you'll probably get close to the max of $504/week. Make sure to certify EVERY WEEK starting the Sunday after your approval - if u miss a week, its a HUGE pain to get those benefits retroactively. Also sign up for direct deposit if u havent already! The debit card option sucks.

I LITERALLY just went through this process. With your salary you'll get very close to the max ($504). First payment took exactly 10 days after approval for me (approved April 2, got paid April 12). One thing no one tells you - make sure all your info is correct because if there's ANY discrepancy, your payment will get held up and good luck reaching anyone for help.

Just wanted to share my recent experience since I see a lot of questions about timing and amounts. I was making $56K when I got laid off in January and filed immediately. Got approved after about 2.5 weeks and am receiving $497/week (pretty close to what you should expect with your salary). The calculation is based on your highest earning quarter in the "base period" - for me that was Q3 last year when I had some overtime. First payment came through exactly 9 days after approval via direct deposit. One thing I wish someone had told me earlier - definitely opt for tax withholding! I chose 10% federal withholding to avoid any surprises come tax season. Also, the Sunday certification thing is no joke - I almost missed my second week because I thought it was just a reminder email. Set a phone alarm for Sunday mornings, trust me on this one. Hope this helps with your budgeting! Queens rent is definitely rough but at least the benefits should cover a decent chunk while you're job hunting.

Hey Jamal! I went through the exact same thing last year when I got laid off from my tech job. Making around $60K, I ended up getting $504/week which is the max in NY. The calculation is based on your highest quarter earnings in what they call the "base period" - usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters before you filed. A few things that might help: - First payment typically takes 10-14 days after approval if you have direct deposit set up - DO NOT miss your weekly certifications on Sunday - I learned this the hard way when I missed one and it took weeks to get that payment - Consider having taxes withheld (I do 10% federal) to avoid a surprise tax bill later - Keep detailed records of everything - screenshots, dates, times One last tip: if you run into any issues and need to speak to someone at DOL, the phone system is basically impossible. I ended up using a service called claimyr.com when my account got flagged for some reason. They basically wait on hold for you and connect you when an agent picks up. Saved me literally hours of trying to get through. Good luck with the job search! The benefits should definitely help with that Queens rent situation.

•This is super helpful, thank you! I'm definitely going to set up that tax withholding - seems like everyone who didn't do it regretted it later. Quick question about the weekly certifications - do you have to do them at a specific time on Sunday or just sometime during the day? And thanks for the tip about claimyr, I'll keep that in mind in case I run into any issues. Fingers crossed everything goes smoothly!

Just wanted to chime in as someone who recently went through this process! With your $58K salary, you should definitely be getting close to the maximum benefit of $504/week. I was making about $55K and got $485/week, so you're probably looking at around $495-504. The calculation everyone's mentioning about the highest quarter is spot on - they look at your best earning quarter in the base period and divide by 26. If you had any bonuses or overtime in one of those quarters, that really helps bump up your weekly amount. For timing, my first payment took exactly 12 days after approval. Make sure you're doing those Sunday certifications religiously - I set a recurring phone alarm for 9 AM every Sunday so I never forget. One thing I haven't seen mentioned yet is that you can check your payment history and upcoming payment dates through the NY DOL website once you're set up. It's actually pretty helpful for budgeting since you can see exactly when payments are scheduled to hit your account. Hope the job search goes well! The marketing field is tough right now but at least you've got some breathing room with the benefits.

•This is really reassuring to hear from someone who just went through it! I didn't even think about checking the payment schedule online - that's going to be super useful for planning my budget. And yeah, marketing is definitely tough right now but hopefully something will come up soon. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Hey Jamal! I just went through this exact same situation a few months ago when I got laid off from my sales job. With your $58K salary, you should definitely be getting close to the max - I was making about $56K and ended up with $498/week. One thing that really helped me was understanding that they calculate it based on your highest earning quarter, not just your annual salary divided by 52. So if you had a particularly good quarter with bonuses or commission, that's what they're using for the calculation. For timing, my first payment took about 2 weeks after approval, but I had direct deposit set up which definitely speeds things up. And seriously - DO NOT miss those Sunday certifications! I almost forgot one week and had a mild panic attack when I realized how important they are. Also wanted to echo what others have said about tax withholding. I chose to have 10% federal taxes taken out and I'm so glad I did. My friend didn't and got hit with a huge tax bill. Hang in there with the job search! I know Queens rent is brutal but at least you've got some financial cushion while you look for the next opportunity. The marketing industry is picking back up from what I've been hearing.

•Thanks for all the detailed info! Just wanted to add that I'm also in the same boat - got laid off from my job in tech support making around $52K. Still waiting for my approval but this thread has been super helpful in understanding what to expect. The tax withholding advice seems universal - definitely going to opt for that when I get approved. And setting up that Sunday reminder is going on my to-do list right now!

Hey Jamal! I'm actually in a really similar situation - got laid off from my project management role about 6 weeks ago and just started receiving my benefits. With your $58K salary, you should definitely be getting close to the maximum $504/week. I was making $61K and I'm getting the full $504. A couple things I learned the hard way that might help you: 1. The first payment can be slow - mine took almost 3 weeks after approval even with direct deposit 2. Set multiple alarms for Sunday certifications! I use 8 AM and 6 PM reminders because missing even one week creates a huge headache 3. Definitely opt for tax withholding if you haven't already - I'm doing 10% federal and it's worth the peace of mind One more tip: download the NY Mobile ID app if you haven't already. It makes the weekly certifications way faster and you can check your payment status on the go. Way better than trying to use their website on mobile. The Queens rent struggle is real! At least the benefits should cover most of your housing costs while you're job hunting. Marketing jobs seem to be picking up again from what I'm seeing on LinkedIn. Good luck with the search!

•This is all such great advice! I'm a newcomer here but have been lurking and reading everyone's experiences. Just got laid off from my retail management job last week and about to file for unemployment. The tax withholding tip seems to be mentioned by literally everyone - definitely not making that mistake! And wow, didn't know about the NY Mobile ID app, that sounds like a game changer. Thanks for sharing all these practical tips, it's making this whole process feel way less overwhelming.

Just wanted to jump in as someone who's been through the NY unemployment system recently! With your $58K salary, you should definitely expect something in the $495-504 range - I was making around $59K and got $501/week. The calculation is based on your highest quarter in the base period (first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters), so if you had any bonuses or overtime in one of those quarters, that really helps your weekly amount. A few things that saved me a lot of stress: - First payment took about 10 days after approval with direct deposit - Set multiple Sunday reminders for certifications - I use 9 AM and 8 PM alarms because missing one is a nightmare - Definitely choose tax withholding! I went with 10% federal and it's been worth it - Keep screenshots of everything - the system can be glitchy If you run into any issues where you need to actually talk to someone at DOL, the phone system is basically impossible. I ended up using claimyr.com when my account had a weird flag and they got me connected to an agent in under an hour instead of days of trying. Queens rent is brutal but at least you'll have decent coverage while job hunting. Marketing seems to be bouncing back lately based on what I'm seeing. Hang in there!

•Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who's shared their experiences here! I'm new to this community but this thread has been incredibly helpful. I'm in a similar boat - lost my customer service job a couple weeks ago (was making about $48K) and just filed for unemployment yesterday. All the advice about tax withholding and Sunday certifications is noted! Really appreciate how supportive everyone is here. It's stressful enough losing your job without having to figure out this whole system on your own.

Welcome to the community Jamal! I went through this exact same process about 6 months ago when I got laid off from my digital marketing role. With your $58K salary, you should definitely be getting close to that $504 maximum - I was making $55K and ended up with $489/week. A few things I wish someone had told me upfront: - Your first payment will likely take 10-14 days after approval (mine was 11 days with direct deposit) - Those Sunday certifications are CRITICAL - I set reminders for 8am and 6pm every Sunday because missing even one creates major headaches - Definitely opt for tax withholding if you haven't already - I chose 10% federal and saved myself from a nasty surprise at tax time - Keep detailed records of everything - screenshot your weekly certifications, payment dates, any correspondence The calculation is based on your highest earning quarter in the base period, so if you had a good quarter with bonuses or extra hours, that's what they're using. One last tip from someone who's been there - if you run into any issues that require talking to an actual person at DOL, the regular phone system is basically useless. I tried for days to get through when I had a payment issue. Finally used a service called claimyr.com that handles the hold time and connects you when an agent picks up. Best $20 I ever spent after wasting hours trying to get through myself. Queens rent is no joke, but you should have decent coverage while job hunting. Marketing is definitely picking back up - I actually just landed a new role last month! Hang in there and feel free to ask if you have any other questions. This community has been super helpful throughout my whole unemployment journey.

•Hey Mia, thanks for the warm welcome and congrats on landing the new role! That's really encouraging to hear that marketing is picking back up. I'm definitely feeling more confident about this whole process after reading everyone's advice. Already set up those Sunday reminders and opted for the 10% tax withholding based on what literally everyone here has recommended. Good to know about claimyr too - hopefully I won't need it but sounds like a lifesaver if any issues come up. Really appreciate how helpful everyone has been in this thread!

Hey Jamal! Just wanted to chime in as someone who recently navigated this whole process. I was laid off from my HR coordinator position making about $54K and ended up getting $476/week, so with your $58K salary you should definitely be in that $495-504 range everyone's mentioning. A few things that really helped me that I haven't seen mentioned yet: - If you're job searching actively, keep records of your applications and interviews - sometimes they audit to make sure you're actively looking for work - The NY unemployment website has a section where you can update your skills/resume that some employers actually use for recruiting - Don't be afraid to take on some freelance or part-time work while collecting - you just need to report it during your weekly certification (they'll reduce your benefit proportionally but you might still come out ahead overall) Also seconding what everyone said about those Sunday certifications - I literally have "UNEMPLOYMENT CERTIFICATION" as a recurring calendar event now because missing one is such a pain to fix. First payment took about 12 days for me with direct deposit. The waiting is definitely stressful when you're worried about rent, but it does come through! Hope your job search goes smoothly - marketing roles seem to be opening up more lately from what I've been seeing. This community has been amazing for moral support and practical advice during the whole process!

•Hey Makayla, this is really helpful advice! I'm new to this community and just starting my unemployment journey after getting laid off from my graphic design job last week. The tip about keeping job search records is something I hadn't thought about - definitely going to start documenting everything from day one. And good to know about the freelance work option too, that could be really useful down the line. Thanks for mentioning the skills/resume section on the website, I'll definitely check that out. It's so reassuring to see how supportive everyone is here - makes this whole stressful process feel a lot less overwhelming!
