Is NY unemployment paying maximum benefit now that $300 federal payments ended?
Just found out that as of September 5, 2025, we're no longer getting the $300 federal supplement with our unemployment benefits. I'm confused about what happens now with our regular NY unemployment. Will they automatically start paying us the maximum amount we're eligible for, or is regular unemployment completely cut off too? My benefit year isn't over yet, but I'm worried I might not get anything at all now. Has anyone received a payment after Sept 5th? How much did you get?

The regular NY unemployment benefits continue exactly as before - only the federal supplement of $300 is ending. Your weekly benefit amount (WBA) was calculated when you first filed and won't change. The maximum regular NY unemployment is currently $625/week for claims filed after January 2025, but you'll get whatever your determined amount was when you applied. Nothing about your regular benefits changes.

•Thank you! That helps a lot. So I'll just keep getting my regular amount which was $487/week? Just without the extra $300 federal money on top?

•Ok that makes sense. I think I got confused because someone at my old job said something about benefit amounts changing when the federal money ended.

To clarify what others have said, your base unemployment continues unchanged - just minus the $300 federal supplement. Your benefit amount was calculated based on your earnings during your base period (roughly the 5 quarters before you filed). The maximum possible benefit ($625/week) only applies if your previous earnings were high enough to qualify for that amount. You mentioned your benefit year isn't over yet - that's good! You can continue claiming until either: 1. You reach your maximum benefit entitlement (total $ amount in your claim) 2. Your benefit year ends (typically one year from filing date) 3. You find new employment Just keep certifying weekly as usual.

•This is super helpful, thank you! I was worried everything might stop at once. My benefit year ends in November, so I should be able to keep claiming until then (unless I find work first, which I'm trying to do).

I just got my payment yesterday and it was exactly my regular amount minus the $300. So yes, it continues but smaller obviously.

Is anyone else FURIOUS about this?!?! I can't pay my rent with just the regular amount! They can't just cut off the extra $300 with literally NO WARNING!!! I called unemployment FIVE TIMES yesterday and couldn't get through to anyone! How are we supposed to survive on the regular amount??? This is INSANE!!!

•This was actually announced months ago - it wasn't sudden. The federal supplement was always meant to be temporary through the fiscal year. I understand it's difficult though - you might want to check if you qualify for SNAP benefits or emergency rental assistance through NY's ERAP program to help with the transition.

I was in the same boat last week - couldn't get through to anyone at unemployment to ask about this. Was on hold for 3+ hours before getting disconnected each time. Finally I used this service called Claimyr that got me through to an agent in about 20 minutes. They basically call on your behalf and then connect you when they reach an agent. Saved me hours of frustration. Their site is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE The agent confirmed what others are saying - regular benefits continue as normal, just without the federal supplement. If you have other questions about your specific claim, I'd recommend trying to actually speak with an agent.

My sister-in-law said she heard they might extend the federal money again in October but I haven't seen anything official. Has anyone else heard this???

•There's no credible information about any extension of the federal supplement. The legislation that authorized it specifically ended on September 5, 2025, and there's been no movement in Congress to extend it. I'd recommend planning based on just receiving your regular NY unemployment amount going forward.

What if your benefit year just ended? Mine ended Sept 2 and I was told I need to reapply... anyone know if the whole process starts over?

•Yes, if your benefit year ended, you need to file a new claim. Your benefit amount might change based on your work history during your new base period. Any work you did during your previous benefit year (even part-time) will be included in calculating your new benefit rate. You'll need to go through the application process again including the 1-week waiting period.

Thank you everyone for the quick responses! This clarifies a lot. I was getting worried when I saw the smaller payment amount but now I understand it's just continuing as normal minus the federal supplement. I'll keep certifying weekly until either my benefit year ends in November or I find a new job.

•You're welcome! One more tip - make sure to report any part-time or temporary income when you certify each week. You can still receive partial benefits if you work less than 30 hours or earn less than your benefit amount. This can help extend your benefits while you're looking for full-time work.
