"NY Unemployment Portal Shows 'Benefits Exhausted' Message Despite Federal Extension Through September 4th - Will I Still Get Paid for Week Ending 8/1/2021?"

This week when I certified for my unemployment I noticed something different on my confirmation page. After submitting my weekly claim it showed a message saying I've exhausted all unemployment benefits on my claim. This is weird because I thought benefits were supposed to continue until September 4th. Has anyone else had this message show up recently? I was certifying for the week of 7/25/2021-7/31/2021, and after I submitted everything, instead of the normal confirmation, I got a Confirmation Page with this message: "Your claim for the week of 7/25/2021-7/31/2021 has been entered for processing. Important Information You have exhausted all unemployment benefits on your claim. We encourage you to use the job search resources available on our Career Services resource page. To find out if you are eligible for assistance provided by other New York State programs and services, go to www.mybenefits.ny.gov." There was also something about Direct Deposit Option saying "You may choose to have your weekly benefits directly deposited into your checking account. You must have a..." This was on the Department of Labor Unemployment Insurance Benefits Online portal. Will I still get paid for this week that I just certified for? I'm really confused because I don't think I've used up all my benefits yet and I was counting on this money through early September. I thought the federal extension was supposed to last until September 4th. Has anyone else in New York seen this message recently? I don't usually pay much attention to this confirmation page other than to check that my claim went through successfully, but this message about exhausting benefits really caught me off guard.

Yes, I literally just saw this same message yesterday when I certified! I freaked out at first but I did some digging and I think it means you've used up your initial 26 weeks of regular UI benefits. The federal programs (PEUC extension) should automatically kick in - at least that's what happened for me back in March when I first saw a similar message. Check your payment history in a couple days to see if the money still comes through.

Thank you! That's a huge relief. I'll check my payment history on Wednesday and see if it gets processed normally.

Same thing happened to me about 2 weeks ago. Got the message but the money still came through. It's just a system thing I guess 🤷‍♂️

I got this message back in April and panicked but still got paid. The system is super confusing with all these extensions. Wish they would explain things better.

After dealing with endless problems getting through to NY unemployment, I finally found a service called Claimyr that got me connected to an actual person at NYSDOL. Used it last month when my benefits suddenly stopped and got everything sorted in one call. It was the best money I've ever spent to finally get my issue resolved after weeks of stress. They basically call for you and get you through the phone tree, then connect you when there's a live agent. Here's a demo video of how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

wait for real? does this actually work? I've been trying to get through to someone for weeks about my missing backpay 😫

Yep! I was skeptical at first too but I was desperate after 3 weeks of calling with no luck. Got through to someone in about 90 minutes with Claimyr when I had spent literally days trying on my own.

sounds like another scam tbh. everything about unemployment is just one giant headache 🤮

0 coins

Not a scam at all - they just automate the calling process. Worked perfectly for me and the agent fixed my issue right away. Check out their website claimyr.com if you're curious.

another day another 'miracle solution' that's probably just taking advantage of desperate people... has anyone else besides this person actually used it?

0 coins

I actually used it last week when my payments randomly stopped. Got through to someone who fixed my issue in like 10 minutes. After spending HOURS calling myself it was totally worth it.

This exact thing happened to me! It's actually just a glitch in their system. The message shows up when you transition from one benefit type to another. You'll still get paid, don't worry. The September 4th date is still correct - that's when all the federal programs end.

NY's unemployment system is SO BROKEN. I swear they design it to be confusing on purpose so people just give up trying to get benefits. I've seen that message before and still got paid though, so you should be fine.

100% this! 💯 The whole system is designed to frustrate people into giving up. Been saying this for months!

facts. my friend works in IT and says their systems are running on technology from like the 1980s. its a miracle anything works at all

Hi, I work with a community legal aid group that helps people with unemployment issues. This message typically appears when you've exhausted your regular UI benefits, which last for 26 weeks. However, due to the pandemic extensions, you'll automatically be enrolled in PEUC (Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation) which adds additional weeks. The system sometimes shows this message during the transition period. You should still receive benefits for the week you certified. If you don't receive payment by Thursday, I'd recommend trying to contact NYSDOL directly. Their phone lines are notoriously difficult to get through, but many people have had success using services like claimyr.com which can help you connect with a live agent. Keep in mind that all federal unemployment programs (including the extensions and the $300 supplement) do end on September 4, 2021. After that date, only regular UI will be available to those who qualify. Feel free to DM me if you need more specific guidance or resources.

Thank you so much for this detailed explanation! That makes a lot of sense. I think I started collecting around February, so the 26 weeks timing adds up. Hopefully the transition happens automatically like you said.

do we need to do anything to enroll in PEUC or is it automatic? the website never explains any of this clearly 🤦‍♀️

Drake

It should be automatic in most cases. The system will move you to PEUC once your regular UI is exhausted. Just continue certifying weekly as usual. The only exception would be if there was a change in your eligibility status.

The similar thing happend to me last month its just a system thing, youll still get paid. The ny unemployment website is garbage and constantly shows wrong info

I had something similar happen and I called the automated phone system (it's actually easier than the website sometimes) and it told me my claim was still active with a balance. Maybe try the phone system to double check?

0 coins

Good idea, I'll try that tomorrow! Which number do you use for the automated system?

0 coins

I use 1-888-581-5812 for the automated system. Just follow the prompts to check your claim status/balance. WAY more reliable than the website tbh

The real answer: nobody knows for sure because NY unemployment is a hot mess and gives different answers depending who you talk to and what day it is 🤡 But yeah like others said you'll probably still get paid

0 coins

THIS. I've been told three completely different things by three different reps. It's literally just luck of the draw who you get on the phone.

0 coins

lmaaaoooo so true. I had one rep tell me to ignore messages on the website and just keep certifying 🤣

0 coins

Call them!!!! Don't listen to the website. If you don't call you could miss out on benefits you're entitled to. I learned this the hard way.

0 coins

Easier said than done. Been trying to call for 3 weeks straight 😩

0 coins

Use claimyr.com - I got through in under 2 hours after trying for days on my own. They just automated the calling process but it actually works.

That message has been appearing randomly for some people. It's most likely that you're transitioning between benefit types (regular UI to PEUC). Most people still get paid, but if you want to be 100% sure, you need to speak with a rep. I spent 4 days trying to get through on the phone with no luck, then used Claimyr and got connected to a rep who confirmed my benefits were still active despite the message. The rep told me it's a known issue with their system.

just wait til tuesday and see if u get paid. thats what i always do when weird stuff happens on the site. half the time its just glitches

0 coins

Does anyone else feel like the Sept 4 cutoff is coming way too soon? With Delta variant spreading I don't understand why they're ending all the programs. I'm seeing that message too btw, but still got paid.

0 coins

I know right? It's crazy how they're just cutting everyone off when cases are rising again. But this is America... what did we expect 🙄

0 coins

Write to your representatives and senators! If enough people complain they might extend it again. Worth a shot at least.

0 coins

i heard they're definitely not extending it this time. talking to an unemployment rep last week, she said they're already preparing for the shutdown of all federal programs.

Try logging out completely and logging back in. Sometimes the NY unemployment website shows cached messages that aren't current. That fixed it for me when I had weird messages showing up.

0 coins

I'll try that, thanks! Their website is so glitchy sometimes.
