NY unemployment back payment stuck in 'pending' for 2 months - anyone else?
I've been on NY unemployment since January and everything was going fine until March. My last two months of payments are stuck in 'pending' status with no explanation why. Each week I certify like normal, but no money hits my account. When I check my payment history, it shows 'pending' next to the last 8 weeks. I called the NYSDOL number at least 20 times but can't get through - either busy signals or the automated system hangs up after saying 'high call volume.' Has anyone else experienced this? I'm getting desperate as rent is due next week and I have no income. Did anyone successfully resolve a similar issue? I'm at my wit's end.

Yep, same thing happened to me back in February. My account suddenly showed 'pending' for no reason. My claim was stuck like that for about 6 weeks. I think they're doing some kind of random audits or something this year. Keep trying to call though - that's really the only way to fix it.

Thanks for the response. Did you ever figure out why it happened? I'm worried I made some mistake on my certification but can't think of what it could be. 6 weeks sounds brutal - I'm already almost at 8 weeks with no end in sight.

TRUST ME, it's no mistake you made. the system is DESIGNED to be this dysfunctional!!! they WANT us to give up. i had 3 months of payments held up last year and every agent gave me a different story. one said it was a 'random review', another said 'system flag' and another said 'documentation needed' but nobody could tell me WHAT documentation!! absolute nightmare.

This is actually fairly common right now. There are a few things that could be causing it: 1. Identity verification review (they're doing more of these in 2025) 2. Quarterly wage review where they verify your previous employer's reports 3. Random audit (they do these periodically) 4. System glitch (yes, this happens more than they admit) The fastest way to resolve it is to speak directly with a claims specialist. They can see exactly what's flagging your account and clear it if it's just a review. However, if they need documentation, they'll tell you exactly what to submit.

Thank you for this detailed explanation! Do you know if there's a special number to reach claims specialists directly? The main number seems completely useless.

I was stuck in pending for 7 weeks earlier this year, and what worked for me was using Claimyr (claimyr.com). It's a service that gets you through to an actual unemployment agent - saved me hours of redial hell. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE showing how it works. In my case, it turned out to be a random quarterly review flag that the agent cleared in literally 5 minutes once I actually got to talk to someone. All my back payments came through 3 days later.

I actually checked both my email and the message center in my account every day. There's nothing there explaining the pending status. That's what makes this so frustrating - no explanation at all!

I work with unemployment cases regularly, and there's been a significant increase in these "pending" claims in 2025. From what I've seen, the NYSDOL implemented a new verification system in January that's causing a lot of these delays. Here's what you should do: 1. Continue certifying weekly without fail 2. Check if your UI account has any tasks in the "Required Actions" section 3. Make sure all your personal information is up-to-date 4. Try calling right when they open at 8:00 AM 5. If you can't get through by phone, try sending a secure message through your account specifically mentioning the number of weeks pending Most importantly, don't panic. These pending issues are almost always resolved with all back pay included. The system is overwhelmed, but they do eventually process everything.

Thank you so much for this detailed advice. I've been certifying regularly and checked for required actions (none showing). I'll try the 8 AM calling strategy tomorrow. Is there a specific subject line I should use for the secure message to get better attention?

Use something clear and specific in the subject line like "8 Weeks of Payments Stuck in Pending Status - Urgent". In the message, include your claim ID number, the exact dates of the pending payments, and state that you've received no communication explaining the delay. Be polite but convey urgency. This approach tends to get faster responses.

So I had this EXACT issue from January-March this year. Found out it was because my previous employer was disputing my claim (even though I was laid off!) but the DOL never bothered to tell me! I only found out when I finally got through to someone on the phone. They cleared it up and I got all my back pay at once. The stupid thing is I could have responded weeks earlier if they'd just told me what was happening!!! You MUST get through to a human on the phone - it's literally the only way to fix this.

Oh no, I hope that's not what's happening to me. My employer and I parted on good terms, but who knows what's happening behind the scenes. How did you eventually get through on the phone? I've been trying for weeks with no luck.

Honestly, it was just pure persistence. I called 30+ times a day for a week straight. Best times seemed to be right at 8am when they open or around 2pm when lunch rush is over. I've heard some people have luck on Thursdays for some reason? No idea if that's true but might be worth trying. The whole system is intentionally difficult to navigate IMO.

Update to my earlier reply: Make sure you're checking your spam folder too. NYSDOL has been sending emails requesting additional verification that often end up in spam folders. These emails have a 10-day response window, and if you miss it, your payments stay pending until you contact them. Also, have you tried accessing your account from a different browser? Sometimes their system has display issues with certain browsers and won't show you important notifications.

I just checked spam folder and there's nothing there from NYSDOL. I also tried logging in with Edge instead of Chrome, but still not seeing any notifications or required actions. This is so frustrating. I appreciate your help though!

After reading through this thread, I wanted to share what finally worked for me when I was in this exact situation in February. I tried for weeks to get through the regular channels without success. What finally worked was using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an agent. Once I actually spoke to someone, they identified a system flag on my account that needed manual clearing - took the agent about 2 minutes to fix once I got through. All my pending payments hit my account 48 hours later. Their video demo (https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE) shows how it works. Definitely worth considering if you've been stuck for 8 weeks already.

Thank you for this suggestion. I'm going to try the early morning calls tomorrow as someone suggested, but if that doesn't work I might try this service. At this point I just need to talk to a real person who can actually see what's wrong with my claim.

Just to add to this discussion - while services like that can help you reach an agent faster, you can also try contacting your state representative's office. They often have dedicated staff who can escalate unemployment issues. It's a free option worth trying if you're having trouble connecting with NYSDOL directly.

Any updates? Were you able to get through to anyone or resolve this?

UPDATE: I finally got this resolved! After trying for days to call with no luck, I ended up using Claimyr to get through to an agent. The agent told me my account had been flagged for "quarterly review" but nobody had actually reviewed it - it was just sitting in a queue. She cleared it manually and all my pending payments were processed within 48 hours. All 8 weeks of back pay hit my account yesterday! Such a relief. Thank you to everyone for the advice and support.
