NY unemployment benefit year ended after 8 weeks - still eligible for remaining 6 weeks?

I've been collecting NY unemployment for 8 weeks now, but when I tried to certify today the system says my benefit year has ended. This doesn't make sense because the rep I talked to last month told me I had 6 more weeks of benefits available (total of 14 weeks). Is this just a computer glitch? Has anyone else had their benefit year end early even though they still had weeks remaining? Do I need to file a new claim or should I just call them to fix this error in their system?

Thanks for explaining. I'm positive my benefit year shouldn't be over yet since I only started claiming in February 2025. I'll try calling them tomorrow.

This happens ALL THE TIME with NYSDOL! Their systems are from the stone age and constantly have these weird glitches. I lost 3 weeks of benefits last year because of similar system errors and it took FOREVER to get it fixed. Good luck getting through on the phone - you'll be waiting for hours if you can even get in the queue!!

I had this exact issue last week! It showed my benefit year ended but I still had 4 weeks left. I spent 2 days trying to get through on the phone with no luck. Then I tried Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got connected to an agent in about 20 minutes. They confirmed it was a system error and reset something on their end. My account was fixed by the next day and I could certify again. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Never heard of that service before. Did you have to give them your personal info? I'm always nervous about third-party sites.

No, they don't need your unemployment info. They just help you get through to an actual NYSDOL agent on the phone. You talk directly with the unemployment office, not with them. It just bypasses the wait time somehow. Totally worth it when you're desperate to talk to someone.

check if ur monetary benefit determination letter says anything about ur claim duration. sometimes the 8 weeks is all u get depending on how much u worked before filing. but if they told u 14 weeks then somethings wrong

I definitely qualified for 14 weeks based on my work history. The determination letter confirmed that. I worked full-time for over 2 years before being laid off.

I'm in a similar situation but slightly different. My benefit year doesn't end until September but my payment stopped coming three weeks ago with no explanation. I can still certify but nothing gets deposited. I called over 20 times and finally got through yesterday. They said there was a \

That sounds like a different issue. When your benefit year ends, you'll get a specific message saying your BYE (Benefit Year End) date has been reached. If you're able to certify but not receiving payment, it's likely a hold or pending review issue. The system should show a message about that when you log in or check your payment history.

You're right - OP's issue seems different. I just wanted to share because sometimes these system errors can look similar but have different causes. The online messages aren't always clear about what's happening.

This is a common issue when there's a discrepancy between your claim effective date and the weeks you've actually claimed. If there were any weeks you didn't certify, the system might still count those in your total benefit duration while showing your benefit year has ended.\n\nYou need to speak with a representative to reconcile this. They can verify your remaining benefit entitlement and either extend your benefit year or correct the system error. Don't file a new claim until you speak with them, as that could create more complications.\n\nCall early in the morning right when the phone lines open (7:30 AM) for the best chance of getting through.

I did skip certifying for 2 weeks when I had some temporary work, but the rep specifically told me those weeks wouldn't count against my total. I'll try calling at 7:30 tomorrow, thanks for the tip!

UPDATE: Finally got through to someone today! It was indeed a system error. The rep said my account showed two different effective dates somehow - one from when I initially applied and one from when my claim was actually processed (which was 2 weeks later). This created the false

Great! Glad to hear it was resolved. This is a good reminder for everyone that sometimes what appears to be a benefit year ending can actually be a technical issue. Always best to speak with a representative before assuming you need to file a new claim.

Absolutely! And for anyone reading this later - it took me 3 hours of calling but I finally got through around 10:30am. Don't give up!
