NY unemployment increased my maximum benefit amount - what does this mean?

Yesterday I checked my payment history on the NY unemployment portal and noticed that my maximum benefit amount increased by $1,450. I originally had $11,232 when I first filed in August last year, and now it shows $12,682. My weekly benefit rate is still the same at $504, but they added more to my total. Does anyone know what this means? Is this normal or some kind of error? I don't want to get hit with an overpayment later if I keep claiming. I tried calling but after 2 hours on hold, I got disconnected. Anyone experienced something similar?

Axel Bourke

When did you first start collecting? The system sometimes does this when they do a benefit year review or if you qualified for an extension. Had the same thing happen to me in March - got an extra $2,100 added to my maximum. As long as you didn't do anything wrong on your claims you should be fine.

Started collecting in August 2023. No notification about any extension though, it just randomly appeared. Did you get any kind of letter or email about your increase?

Nope, no letter for me either. The NY unemployment system isn't exactly known for its communication skills lol. I only found out when I checked my payment history.

They literally NEVER send notifications about anything important ๐Ÿ™„ but will spam you with surveys asking how they're doing. The irony.

After weeks of getting nowhere with the phone lines, I tried claimyr.com to get through to someone at ny unemployment. They call and wait on hold for you then connect you to a rep when someone answers. Talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast. Check out their service: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? ๐Ÿ™„

No catch - they just call for you and wait on hold so you don't have to. When a real person picks up, they connect you. Saved me literally days of hold time.

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? The unemployment phone system is basically designed to make you give up ๐Ÿ’€

It worked for me! I was skeptical too but I was desperate after trying for 3 weeks straight. Got connected within 2 hours of using claimyr.

I used them too after my account got randomly locked for 'verification'. Worth every penny to get actual answers instead of the runaround.

Most likely they did a recalculation of your benefits. This happens sometimes when they review your base period wages and find additional income that wasn't counted initially. Keep claiming as normal, but maybe print out your payment history screen for your records just in case there's any issue later.

Hey I'm actually dealing with the EXACT SAME ISSUE but in reverse - they REDUCED my maximum amount by like $1800 with zero explanation. Anyone know if I can appeal this or am I just screwed? thx

Happened to my cousin. You need to request a monetary determination review. They can adjust it down if they find you reported income incorrectly.

Ugh makes no sense... I worked fulltime for 3 years at the same company before getting laid off. How do I request this review thing?

You gotta call them ๐Ÿ’€ good luck with that. Took my cousin 37 attempts before getting through. Or try what that person above said about claimyr.com

This happened to me last month! The extra money was because they added some wages from a part time job I forgot I even had in my base period. I got a letter explaining it about 2 WEEKS AFTER they already changed the amount online. Classic NY unemployment efficiency ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ

That makes sense! I did have a small side gig early last year that I reported on my taxes. Maybe that's what they found. Did your weekly benefit amount change too or just the maximum?

Just the maximum total - my weekly stayed the same. They just gave me more weeks essentially.

Here's what's probably happening (unemployment specialist here): When you initially file, NY calculates your benefits based on your highest quarter of earnings in your base period. Sometimes they do recalculations when additional wage data comes in from employers or tax records. The increase you're seeing means one of several things: 1) They found additional wages in your base period that weren't initially reported 2) There was a system correction (fixing an earlier error) 3) There could be a benefit year extension (though they would typically notify you) 4) In rare cases, there are adjustments for inflation or cost of living My advice: Document everything, keep claiming as normal, but set aside funds from benefits if you're worried about potential overpayment. The best solution is to speak directly with a claims specialist. I recommend trying claimyr.com if you can't get through on the phone - many of my clients have had success with them getting connected to a live person who can explain exactly what's happening with your specific claim.

Wow super helpful! How long have you been a specialist? I've been getting different answers from everyone I talk to at the dept.

10+ years working with unemployment systems in 3 different states. NY's system is particularly... challenging ๐Ÿ˜ฌ The frontline phone reps often don't have access to the full details of claim adjustments.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! Do you think I should keep claiming like normal then? I don't want to end up with an overpayment notice.

Yes, continue claiming normally. The system wouldn't let you claim beyond what you're entitled to. If there was an error that's on them, not you.

This is solid advice. I'm actually a former NYSDOL employee (quit cuz of the insanity) and this person knows what they're talking about.

not to be all doom and gloom but DOCUMENT EVERYTHING!! my benefit amount got increased too and then 6 months later they claimed i had an overpayment bc it was a "system error" ๐Ÿ˜ก took me 3 months to resolve and nearly got sent to collections

Yikes that's exactly what I'm worried about. How did you resolve it eventually?

had to request a hearing and bring ALL my payment screenshots + emails. finally got a supervisor who fixed it but holy crap what a nightmare

Classic NY unemployment. Create problems then make it impossible to solve them ๐Ÿ™ƒ

Does your benefit year ending date stay the same? If they extended that too then it's definitely an extension.

0 coins

-

Nalani Liu

Just checked and the benefit year ending date is still the same - August 2024. So I guess not an extension?

is anyone else's unemployment portal page taking FOREVER to load lately? i can barely check my claim status without the site timing out. typical ny...

YES! Thought it was just me! Been trying to certify since Sunday and keep getting errors or timeouts.

It works better late at night or super early morning. Less traffic on the site.

Call them. Don't trust what ppl say here. Could be an error, could be legit, only way to know for sure is to talk to an agent.

This is a GOOD THING. ๐ŸŽ‰ They sometimes add extra weeks when unemployment rates are high or due to special circumstances. My brother's maximum amount increased twice during his claim period. Just keep certifying normally.

check ur mail!! sometimes the explanation comes like 2 weeks after they make the change. ny unemployment still operates like its 1995 with their communication.

Will do! I've been checking my mail obsessively and nothing yet, but I'll keep an eye out.

Anyone know if they're still doing those quarterly wage reviews? I heard they stopped during covid but might have started again.

They definitely started them back up. Got one myself in February. Took them 6 months to find a job I had for 3 weeks in 2022 lol

Call them but BE PERSISTENT!!! Took me 19 calls and 4 hours of my life I'll never get back, but finally got someone who explained my similar situation. In my case they found additional wages from a W2 that wasn't initially processed. Just be prepared to be transferred at least 3 times ๐Ÿ™„

Not gonna lie am jealous. They DECREASED mine by $3400 and when I called (after like 500 attempts) they said there was nothing they could do because the "system had recalculated" my eligiblity based on some formula. Like thanks for the explanation ๐Ÿคก

Yeah I filed an appeal online but its been 4 weeks with no response. Typical.

Dude my coworker had this exact same thing happen!!! She freaked out thinking it was a mistake but then got a letter saying they had "recalculated her eligibility based on additional wage information" - I think they do this periodically. She just kept claiming like normal and it's been fine.
