NY unemployment payment benefit maximum suddenly increased - is this normal?
So I got laid off from my warehouse position in September last year and filed for unemployment right away. Been getting benefits since October without any issues - my weekly payment was consistently $455. This morning I checked my account and noticed my maximum benefit amount had increased from $11,830 to $13,260. My weekly payment also went up to $510. I didn't file anything new or make any changes to my claim. Has anyone experienced something similar? Should I be worried this is some kind of error that will cause problems later? I don't want to spend the extra money and then have to pay it back if they made a mistake. Called the ny unemployment office three times already but can't get through to anyone to explain why this happened.

The same exact thing happened to me last month! My benefit went from $425 to $490 out of nowhere. I was confused too but turns out they do these recalculations periodically based on wage info from employers. My previous employer had submitted some additional wage data that I hadn't included when I first applied. When I finally got ahold of someone (after like 20 tries), they confirmed everything was legit and I didn't need to worry. Enjoy the extra cash!

β’That's a relief to hear! How did you manage to get through to someone on the phone? I've been trying for days with no luck.

β’I used this service called Claimyr that calls for you and then connects you when an agent picks up. It was the only way I finally got through after weeks of trying. Best money I've spent during unemployment tbh. Here's their site: claimyr.com

β’Yeah it definitely works - I was skeptical too but was desperate after weeks of trying. The service just automates the calling/holding part and then rings your phone when an actual human picks up. They even have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

β’tried that last week and it only took like 28 mins to get connected to someone who fixed my claim issue. talking to an agent got my money unlocked so fast.

This happened because they adjusted the state's beneift rates. Every year around April they review the general unemployment rates and sometimes make adjustments to the weekly benefit amounts. Lucky timing for you lol. You'll probly receive a letter in the mail explaining the changes if you haven't already.

β’Thanks! I'll keep an eye out for that letter. Do you know if this happens to everyone or just certain people?

β’It usually affects most people but depends on when you filed and your wage history. If your original claim was based on older wage data, they might update it.

Something similar happened with me but then they eventually said it was a mistake and I had to pay back like $2000 π« Definitely call them and get it confirmed before you spend any of that extra money. The system is so broken.

β’omg that suuuucks. did they at least let you set up a payment plan or did they want it all at once?

β’They let me do a payment plan but it's still a mess. They take 50% of my current benefits to repay it which is brutal. π

β’this is why i always tell people to put aside some of their unemployment payments just in case. the system is a complete dumpster fire and they WILL come after you for overpayments even when its their fault

Look I've been dealing with ny unemployment system for almost 2 decades through various layoffs and I can tell you with 100% certainty that any unexpected changes need to be verified ASAP. When you can't reach them by phone (which is always), try sending a secure message through your online account. Be specific, mention the exact amount change, and ask for written confirmation that this is correct. Their system makes mistakes ALL THE TIME and you don't want to be on the hook for overpayments. Your best bet to actually talk to a human is to use a service like claimyr.com which will wait on hold for you and then call you when an agent picks up. I've been recommending it to everyone I know on unemployment because it's literally the only reliable way to get through. Talking to an actual agent is the only way to get a definitive answer on something like this. Also, check if your base period for calculating benefits might have shifted, which sometimes happens at quarterly boundaries and can result in different calculation results. Either way, document EVERYTHING.

β’is claimyr actually worth it? never heard of it before

β’Absolutely worth it unless you enjoy spending 6 hours on hold or trying to call 50 times a day. They just automate the hold process - you still talk to the same unemployment agents. It's the best money I've spent to finally get my benefits paid quickly.

DONT SPEND THE MONEY!!! The exact same thing happened to my cousin and he went on a shopping spree and then 3 months later they said it was an error and he had to pay back over $4000 π± He ended up on a payment plan that took forever to clear.

u might have qualified for that increased benefit amount that they just implemented. i think they raised it for ppl who had certain wage levels from their previous jobs. i heard abt this from a friend who works at labor department. check ur email they probly sent something.

β’Can confirm this is true. The max benefit rate increases periodically. They just did another adjustment.

Interesting that no one has mentioned the new legislation that passed in March that temporarily boosted benefits for certain industries including warehouse/logistics. If you worked in a warehouse like you mentioned, this could be why your benefit increased. It was part of some economic stimulus package.

β’Link? I hadn't heard about this and I work in logistics too. Maybe I qualify for higher benefits?

β’I don't have a direct link but google "NY logistics worker relief package 2023" and you should find info about it. It was kinda buried in a larger bill.

In my experience, any unexpected changes to ur benefits almost always means theres an issue you need to resolve. I would NOT touch that extra money until u get confirmation from an agent. I learned this lesson the hard way and ended up owing $1800 back. calling them is literally impossible tho unless u use something like claimyr.com (which is what finally worked for me after weeks of trying).

β’is claimyr some kinda scam or something? why is everyone mentioning it?

Lauren Wood
β’not a scam at all, it's just a service that calls the unemployment office for you and stays on hold so you don't have to. when an agent answers, it connects the call to your phone. i was desperate after trying to call myself for 3 weeks with no luck.

Be VERY CAREFUL with this!! I had my benefits randomly increase last year and I thought it was just a nice surprise. Turns out they had made a calculation error and 6 months later they demanded ALL of the extra money back plus interest! It was almost $3,000 that I had to repay! The system is completely broken and they will hold YOU responsible for THEIR mistakes. Call them immediately and get something in writing confirming this change is legitimate.

If your base period changed, it could explain the increased benefit amount. Benefit calculations look at your highest earning quarters, and sometimes when a new quarter rolls in, it can replace a lower-earning quarter in your calculation. This would result in a higher weekly benefit rate. This is normal and nothing to worry about.

Keith Davidson
β’That makes a lot of sense actually. My last quarter before being laid off was my highest earning one because of overtime. Maybe that's what got factored in.

Hey - I work as an employment counselor (not for NYSDOL but I deal with them often). There have been several benefit rate adjustments recently. What likely happened is that your initial calculation was based on incomplete wage data, and once your full earnings were processed, they recalculated your benefit amount. This is actually pretty common and usually legitimate. That said, you should definitely try to get confirmation. The best way to do this is to speak with an agent directly (good luck with that unless you use a service to help get through the phone system) or check your message center in your online account - they usually send a notice explaining any changes to your benefit amount.

This happened because of the annual recalculation that just went into effect. The maximum weekly benefit amount increased from $504 to $563 in New York, and they retroactively adjusted many claims. You should be receiving a letter explaining this change. This is completely normal and happens every year, though not everyone gets affected depending on your previous wages. Congrats on the increase!

Contact them immediately!! This could be a system error and if you spend the money, you'll have to pay it back. The ny unemployment system is a complete mess right now and these errors happen all the time.

β’I was in the same boat, couldn't get through for weeks. Finally used claimyr.com and got connected to an agent in about 40 minutes. It was the only way I could actually talk to a human.

It's probably related to the quarterly wage recalculation. If they received updated wage information from your employer that showed you earned more than initially reported, they would adjust your benefit rate accordingly. This happens automatically in their system. As long as the wages reported are accurate, you're entitled to the higher amount. I wouldn't worry about it, but if you're concerned, you can try reaching them through the secure message system in your online account.

Check if you received any emails or messages in your online portal. NY unemployment actually does send notifications about changes to your benefits, but they're often easy to miss or go to spam. Also, there was a recent adjustment to the benefit calculation formula that affected many claimants, especially those who worked in certain industries.

My roomate went through this exact same situation! heres what happened: they reviewed his wage history and realized they had been underpaying him based on his previous quarterly earnings. They adjusted his benefit amount AND gave him backpay for the difference on previous weeks. He was freaking out thinking it was a mistake but it was actually legitimate. Try using claimyr.com to get through to an agent - its the only way my roomate finally got confirmation that everything was ok.
