NY unemployment max payout suddenly increased - what does this mean for my benefits?

I just checked my NY unemployment account this morning and noticed my maximum benefit payout amount increased by about $1,200. I didn't file any new claims or make any changes. Has this happened to anyone else? Does this mean I'll get higher weekly payments or just that my benefits will last longer? I'm confused because I thought benefit amounts were fixed when you first apply.

same thing happened to me last month! it means they recalculated ur base period wages. prob found more earnings they didnt count before. u don't get higher weekly payments, just means ur benefits last longer.

Thanks! Any idea why they would recalculate now? I've been on unemployment for 3 months already.

This is actually good news. The NYSDOL periodically reviews claims and sometimes finds additional wages that weren't included in your initial calculation. Your weekly benefit amount stays the same, but your maximum benefit entitlement increases, giving you more weeks of benefits. This typically happens if an employer reported wages late or there was an adjustment to your wage records. You don't need to do anything - the system has already updated your claim.

That's a relief to hear! So if my weekly amount is $504 and my max went up by $1,200, does that mean I get roughly 2.5 more weeks of benefits?

Yes, that's exactly right. If your weekly benefit amount is $504 and your maximum increased by $1,200, you'll get approximately 2.5 additional weeks of benefits (since $1,200 รท $504 = 2.38 weeks). The system automatically extends your benefit period accordingly.

I'm surprised they did this automatically! When this happened to me in January, I had to call them like 8 times before they fixed it. The DOL website is so confusing about this stuff.

I've been trying to call NY unemployment for THREE WEEKS about a similar issue and can't get through!!!!! Every time I call it just says high call volume and hangs up on me. Did you just keep redialing or is there a trick to getting through??

I was in the same boat last month trying to get through about my backpay. After wasting days with the busy signals, I finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an agent in about 20 minutes instead of having to redial hundreds of times. There's a short video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE - totally worth it for saving my sanity when I needed to talk to someone urgently.

This is a benefit recalculation based on your base period wages. According to NY Labor Law Section 590.5, NYSDOL can recalculate your benefits if they determine additional wages were earned during your base period. The recalculation only affects your maximum benefit amount, not your weekly benefit rate which is fixed at the beginning of your claim year. Your claim will now last longer, which is beneficial if you're still unemployed near the end of your benefit period.

Thanks everyone for the helpful responses! I was worried this might be some kind of mistake that would cause problems later. Sounds like I should just be happy about the extra weeks of coverage. I appreciate all the information!

Does anyone know if this happens to everyone? I've been on NY unemployment for 5 months and my maximum benefit amount has never changed. Do I need to request a review or something? My previous employer was always late with paperwork so maybe they missed some of my wages???

You don't need to request a review - the system should catch these things automatically. However, if you believe there are wages missing from your benefit calculation, you can contact the DOL to request a review of your base period wages. Bring any pay stubs or W-2s that might show the missing wages. This is especially important if you worked multiple jobs during your base period.

btw just so u know this happens when they findmissing wages but it CAN also happen if ur claim type changed. like if u were on a disaster claim and got moved to regular UI or something. but sounds like urs is the wage thing since u didn't apply for anything new

thats not right. disaster claims dont convert to regular UI automatically. two different programs. but ur right about the wage thing
