NY unemployment sent me an extra $76 with my benefits - should I be worried?

So my regular unemployment payment hit my account yesterday but I noticed something weird - there was an additional $76 that wasn't part of my usual weekly amount. I've been collecting since September after my company downsized, and I've never had anything like this happen before. My regular payment is always exactly $437, but this week it's $437 plus this random $76. There's no explanation for it on the payment history page. I'm grateful for the extra money of course, but I'm paranoid they're going to say I owe it back later or that something's wrong with my claim. Has anyone else had this happen? Should I try to call them about it or just leave it alone? I don't want to create a problem if there isn't one, but after hearing horror stories about overpayment notices I'm getting worried.

Count it as a blessing and move on. I wouldn't question it or they might take it all back lol. If they really made a mistake, they'll eventually figure it out and let you know.

Yeah that's what I'm leaning toward... I just don't want them to hit me with an overpayment notice 6 months from now and charge me interest or something 😬

They definitely will come back for it if it was a mistake. NY unemployment doesn't just forget about money they gave out by accident. But they won't charge interest at least

tbh i wouldnt stress about it. its probably just a back payment for something. I had something similar happen last year and it was just a retroactive adjustment.

I was stuck in a similar situation a few months back and couldn't get any answers from the website or automated system. I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they got me connected to a real human at unemployment in less than an hour! Talking to an agent got my issues resolved sooooo fast. Worth checking out if you need actual answers - https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE it was the only way I could talk to a live agent without wasting days on hold.

Does this actually work? Seems too good to be true after I've spent literal weeks trying to get through on the phone 🤔

Yeah it absolutely works! I was skeptical too but was desperate after trying for 9 days straight. Got connected in about 45 minutes and fixed my issue in one call.

wait do they need all your personal info to do this? not sure I want to give some random website my details just to get through to unemployment

They don't need ANY of your personal info! They just connect the call to your phone when an agent picks up. Best money I've spent during this whole unemployment nightmare.

another day another unemployment 'hack' that probably costs a fortune 🙄

It's worth every penny compared to spending days redialing. The agent I talked to got my backpay issues fixed and that was worth wayyy more than what I paid for the service.

It's probably retroactive payment for something. Did you have any weeks where you certified late or had to call in to fix something?

Sounds like you hit the jackpot lol. But fr, this could be a retroactive adjustment based on your reported income. Check your payment history on the website to see if there's any description or note attached to the payment. Sometimes they make corrections weeks later.

No description at all, that's what's weird. Just says regular UI payment with the higher amount.

check ur emails too. sometimes they send notifications about adjustments but the subject lines are super generic so you might have missed it

I work in HR and deal with unemployment claims. This is probably a wage credit adjustment. If they recalculated your base period wages or found additional wages they hadn't counted before, it would increase your weekly benefit amount. They usually don't explain these very well, but they're common and legit. If you're worried, document the payment by taking screenshots of your account. But this is most likely in your favor and nothing to worry about.

This is super helpful, thank you! I'll take screenshots just in case.

This is the correct answer 👆 Had the exact same thing happen to me, turned out they recalculated my base period and realized I was owed slightly more per week.

Look carefully at the NY unemployment handbook - there's a section that explains how they might make retroactive adjustments if they determine your benefit rate was calculated incorrectly initially. I'm guessing that's what happened. If you're really worried, try calling them... good luck with that tho 🙃 the phone system is literal hell

I spent 4 days trying to get through on the phone before finding claimyr.com - got connected to an agent in under an hour. Saved my sanity honestly.

The handbook is like 80 pages of bureaucratic nonsense. Who actually reads that thing? 😂

LMAO true, but page 24 actually has this exact scenario described. I only know cuz I had a similar situation last year 😅

OMG this EXACT thing happened to me!!! I got an extra $82 out of nowhere back in January. I freaked out thinking they were gonna come after me but it turns out they had adjusted my weekly benefit amount based on some job I had forgotten I even worked at in my base period. They never sent any explanation or anything, I had to call to find out. Just save the extra money somewhere in case they do want it back but you're probably fine.

how did you manage to get through to someone on the phone? I've been trying for weeks with no luck

I used claimyr.com - they call for you and connect you when a human picks up. Only way I ever got through!

Whatever you do DON'T CALL THEM TO ASK ABOUT IT!!!! They might realize it was a mistake and take it back. Just be quiet and take the money 🤫

This is terrible advice. If it's a mistake they WILL figure it out eventually and then hit you with an overpayment notice plus possible penalties.

ive been on unemployment 3 different times and they always mess something up. trust me, if you bring attention to it, they'll find 5 other problems with your claim you didnt even know about 💯

Nah man, if they made a mistake they'll find it regardless. Better to be proactive than get blindsided later.

Uggghhh I wish I had your problem instead of mine! NY unemployment has been UNDERPAYING me for weeks and I can't get anyone on the phone to fix it! Anyone have luck getting through to a human being lately?

Try claimyr.com - I was in the same boat and they got me connected to a live agent. Best decision I made after wasting days trying to call myself.

So here's whats probably happening (I used to work at DOL): The NY unemployment system periodically runs audits on claims and makes automatic adjustments when they find discrepancies in wage data. This usually happens when: 1. An employer reports additional wages that weren't originally counted 2. They calculate your base period differently based on new information 3. There was a system-wide adjustment to certain types of claims The good news is that if this is coming from their automated system, it's very likely legitimate and not a mistake. They typically don't notify claimants about these small adjustments because it would create thousands of notices for relatively minor changes. If you want certainty, check your payment history for any notes or try to speak with an agent. Getting through to NY unemployment by phone is nearly impossible these days, but I've heard good things about claimyr.com - they'll wait on hold and connect you directly to an agent. For your peace of mind, I'd suggest taking screenshots of your payment history showing the deposit, just in case questions come up later. But honestly, this type of small adjustment is incredibly common and almost always in the claimant's favor.

This is SUPER helpful, thank you for the detailed explanation! I'll stop freaking out about it now 😅

is it true they're running more audits now because of all the fraud from last year? I've heard they're checking everyone's claims more carefully

Yes, they absolutely are. The system is flagging more cases for review, but legitimate adjustments like this one still happen routinely.

If ur worried about it, put the extra money aside in a separate account and don't touch it for a few months. That way if they do ask for it back you'll have it ready. But tbh ny unemployment is so backed up rn they probably wont even notice lol

I just came to say the NY unemployment system is a complete JOKE. I've been trying to resolve an issue for MONTHS and can't get anyone on the phone. The fact that we have to worry about normal system adjustments just shows how poorly they communicate with us. It's embarrassing.

Preach! 🙌 The whole system is designed to be as frustrating as possible so people give up
