Just got ny unemployment deposit with extra money - is this the final payment?

I logged into my account yesterday and noticed something weird. My regular unemployment payment was processed as usual, but there was also an extra $345 deposit. I thought the supplemental payments had already ended last month? I'm pretty confused about this unexpected money. Is this some kind of final catch-up payment? Has anyone else seen something similar in their account? I don't want to spend it if there's been some kind of mistake and they'll ask for it back later. The system didn't give me any notification about why I received this additional amount.

I had the same thing happen back in August! Thought the extra payments ended but then BOOM random money appeared. Called them and they said it was a retroactive payment for a week they missed paying me earlier. Could be something similar for you.

Oh that makes sense! Did you have to pay it back or was it actually owed to you?

It was legit owed to me. They had skipped a week by accident when processing my claim. I'd check your payment history to see if there's any week that looks missing.

After weeks of trying to reach someone at ny unemployment I finally found this service called Claimyr that got me connected to a real person! Used their app (claimyr.com) and had someone actually call me back within an hour. Talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast and they explained all these weird extra payments. Life saver seriously! Check out this video about how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

This sounds like an advertisement. Does this actually work or just another scam?

Not a scam at all! I was desperate after trying for 3 weeks straight to get through. The callback came in less than 45 mins for me. Agent fixed my claim immediately.

yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? šŸ™„

No catch - it's just a service that stays on hold for you. I spent literally HOURS trying to get through before using it. The unemployment system is broken and this is just a workaround.

hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different?

It's not fixing your claim - it's literally just getting you past the phone queue. Then YOU talk to the real NY unemployment agent. Best money I've spent all year considering what was at stake.

I'm seeing alot of ppl getting random backpay lately. The system is playing catchup on claims they messed up. Like they owed me $1,200 from March and suddenly in June it just appeared. Take screenshots of EVERYTHING just in case.

DONT SPEND IT YET!!!! Wait like a week to see if they take it back. I had this happen and it was a mistake - they clawed it back and I had already spent some 😭 Now I'm on a repayment plan.

This ā¬†ļø Happens way more than people realize! NY unemployment system makes mistakes constantly.

0 coins

Ugh that's exactly what I'm worried about. I'll definitely wait before touching it.

It's probably retroactive pay for the weeks they owe you. The system calculates everything weird sometimes. Extra $345 instead of $300 might include some tax adjustment or something. I wouldn't worry too much but maybe call to confirm if ur paranoid.

0 coins

Lol "call to confirm" like that's actually possible. Have you tried calling ny unemployment lately? šŸ’€

Here's what's actually happening with NY unemployment right now (former DOL employee here): The system is processing a bunch of retroactive payments and adjustments from earlier claims. Many accounts had weeks that weren't properly credited during the high volume periods. This is completely normal and you should be receiving a DocuSign form or letter explaining the payment soon. Some tips for everyone dealing with unexpected payments: • Take screenshots of your payment history • Check your message inbox daily • Don't spend unexpected funds for at least 14 days • If you need to contact them directly, use claimyr.com - it's what many of my former colleagues recommend since the phone system is completely overwhelmed • Make sure your contact info and direct deposit details are up to date The extra $45 on top of the standard $300 could be an adjustment for taxes or a partial week calculation. This is often why the numbers don't match exactly what you expect. Hope this helps clear things up for everyone!

This should be the top comment! Finally someone with actual knowledge instead of just guessing.

Can confirm about claimyr.com - that's how I finally got through after weeks of trying. Actually worth it.

It doesn't fix the system - it just keeps you from wasting your whole day on hold. System is still trash but at least you can talk to someone.

Same thing happpened to my roomate. He said it was back pay from a week where they processed his claim wrong. Just watch ur account for the next week to make sure.

0 coins

Did you miss any weeks or have any pending issues on your claim before? Sometimes they resolve those and don't tell you, then the money just shows up.

0 coins

I did have an issue back in July where my payment was delayed, but they never said anything about paying extra later. Could be related.

Lol typical NY unemployment... give you random money with zero explanation, then make it impossible to ask anyone about it šŸ™ƒ What a system!

For real tho! And then they wonder why people get so frustrated.

I'd rather have unexpected money than unexpected BILLS tho šŸ˜‚

Keep the money in your account but dont spend it for at least 2 weeks. If they don't take it back by then, it's probably yours. But CHECK YOUR MESSAGES in the system. Sometimes they send important info there that explains these things.

Not falling for another unemployment 'hack'... these never work

0 coins

This isn't a hack though? OP is just asking about a payment they actually received.

So I was about to throw my phone after 3 hours on hold when my friend told me about claimyr.com - skeptical but desperate. It actually worked and got my weird payment situation sorted out in one call. The agent explained that retroactive payments were being issued for certain weeks where the system miscalculated benefits.

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS?

0 coins

It worked for me! I was shocked too. They basically just wait on hold for you and then call you when an agent picks up. Saved me hours of my life.

Nothing suprises me anymore with ny unemployment. One time they double-paid me, then took it back 3 weeks later with no warning, then sent me a letter saying I owed them money, then another letter saying nevermind. šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø

0 coins

THIS!!! The incompetence is staggering.

0 coins

Sounds about right, New York's unemployment department is like that one friend who borrows money, pays you back double, then asks for change šŸ˜‚

0 coins

Check if you had any weeks where you certified late or had issues. sometimes they do adjustments months later. mine had a random $400 show up and it was back pay from May that finally got approved in September.

I've been dealing with NY unemployment for months and honestly their system is so unpredictable. Last month I got a random $280 deposit that turned out to be legitimate back pay from a week in April where my claim got stuck in "pending" status. The frustrating part is they never sent any notification explaining what it was for - I had to dig through my payment history to figure it out. My advice would be to screenshot everything and maybe set that money aside for a couple weeks just to be safe. If it was a mistake they'll usually catch it pretty quickly, but if it's legit back pay then you're good to go. The whole system is a mess but at least when they owe you money they eventually pay up!

0 coins

This is super helpful! I'm dealing with the same thing right now - got an unexpected deposit and no explanation whatsoever. It's so frustrating that they can't just send a simple message saying "hey this is back pay for week X" or whatever. Thanks for the advice about screenshotting everything, definitely going to do that. Did you ever find out exactly which week yours was from or did you just have to guess based on your payment history?
