Unexpected DEO deposit on top of regular benefits - what could this mystery $270 be?

Logged into my bank account this morning and saw something weird. I filed my regular biweekly claim last Friday like I always do and got my normal payment yesterday ($550). But today I woke up to find another random $270 deposit from the DEO that I wasn't expecting at all! The payment just says "FL DEO UNE" like my normal benefits do. Is this a mistake? A retroactive adjustment? I'm worried they'll realize the error and demand I pay it back later. I've been on unemployment for about 2 months now after my marketing agency downsized. Anyone else get a surprise deposit today or know what this might be for? I checked CONNECT but there's no explanation!

This happened to me last month! Turned out to be a retroactive adjustment from when they recalculated my weekly benefit amount. Check your Determination letters in CONNECT - they might have processed something that increased your WBA or found wages from a previous quarter they initially missed. If there's nothing in your Determination section, you should definitely call DEO to find out what it's for so you don't get hit with an overpayment notice later.

Thanks! I just looked in my Determination letters and don't see anything new. Ugh, I guess I need to call them. Did you have to pay yours back or was it legit?

its probly ur waiting week pay. they dont pay u for the 1st week when u first apply but if ur unemployed long enough they sometimes pay it later

That's NOT how the waiting week works in Florida anymore! The waiting week hasn't been a thing since like 2020. They now pay for all eligible weeks including the first one. OP would have already been paid for their first week when they got their initial payment. This is more likely a retroactive adjustment or possibly even an error. DON'T SPEND IT until you confirm what it's for!!!!

This could be several things: 1. A retroactive adjustment to your Weekly Benefit Amount (if they found additional wages) 2. Payment for a contested week that was initially denied but later approved 3. Back pay for a week that had been under adjudication 4. A system error (which DOES happen) I strongly recommend checking your CONNECT account under "View and Maintain Account Information" and then "Payment History" to see if it shows what the payment is for. If nothing there, look under "Determination, Pending Issues and Decision Summary" to see if any recent issues were resolved in your favor. If you still can't figure it out, you MUST contact DEO directly. Don't spend this money until you confirm what it's for, as they can and will issue an overpayment if it was sent in error.

I checked both those places in CONNECT and can't figure it out. My payment history just shows the deposit but doesn't explain why. No new determinations either. I've been trying to call but keep getting the busy signal... 😩

I've been dealing with FL unemployment for most of this year and had something similar happen. Called DEO literally 47 times before getting through. When I finally talked to someone, found out it was back pay for a week that had been under adjudication for my work search requirements. They had initially flagged one of my weeks but then a reviewer approved it months later. Instead of wasting your whole day calling, I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through. They have this service that calls DEO for you and then connects you when an agent is available. Saved me HOURS of redial frustration. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/UzW_hbUy-ss?si=zORd51jeq1GX5Ldj Definitely worth it to get a straight answer about your money rather than guessing. The DEO agent I spoke with actually told me to hold onto any unexpected money for at least 30 days in case they determine it was an error.

Yes, it worked for me! Got connected to DEO in about 45 minutes instead of spending days trying to get through. Just make sure you have your claimant ID and PIN ready when they connect you.

THE DEO IS ALWAYS MAKING MISTAKES!!!! I got an extra payment last year and thought it was my lucky day. Then 2 months later they sent me an OVERPAYMENT NOTICE saying I owed them $490 plus interest!!! Had to set up a payment plan and everything. THE SYSTEM IS RIGGED AGAINST US!!!! 😡😡😡

same!!! they made me pay back $340 i didnt even kno was wrong

Update: Finally got through to DEO! The $270 was actually for a week from my initial claim that had been under adjudication for a work search issue. They finally approved it (2 months later!) and released the payment. So I do get to keep it! Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions.

Great news! This is very common with DEO - they'll hold weeks under adjudication and then release them much later with no notification. Always good to get confirmation though, so you know you don't have to worry about an overpayment notice down the road. Glad you got it sorted out!

For anyone else finding this thread with a similar issue: ALWAYS contact DEO when you receive unexpected money. Document the call reference number and the name of the agent you speak with. Take screenshots of your CONNECT account showing the payment. If they later try to claim it was an overpayment, you'll have evidence you tried to verify. The burden of proof should be on them, not us!

Good advice! I took screenshots of everything just in case. The agent gave me a confirmation number too which I wrote down.
