Got half my usual payment on ny unemployment for last week - anyone else?

I just checked my account and noticed something weird about my latest benefit payment. For the week ending 10-17-2022, I only received $217 instead of my normal $435. This has never happened before - I've been getting consistent payments since I started claiming in July. I made sure I answered all the certification questions correctly and didn't report any income for that week. Nothing has changed with my claim status that I'm aware of. Has anyone else experienced this recently? I've tried calling the unemployment office like 30 times today but keep getting disconnected or put on hold forever. Starting to worry this means my benefits are being reduced or something's wrong with my claim.

Same thing happened to me! Last week I got $255 instead of my usual $510. I checked my payment history and it literally says "partial payment" with no explanation. Tried calling yesterday and couldn't get through after 45 minutes on hold. This system is completely broken.

Did you ever find out what caused it? I'm wondering if it's some kind of glitch in their system or if something changed with our claims.

Still no idea. I'm going to try calling again tomorrow morning right when they open. Will let you know if I find anything out!

I've heard they're doing some kind of system maintenance lately. Maybe that's why? Seems like the DOL always messes something up whenever they touch their computers 🙄

After struggling with similar issues, I finally found a way to actually talk to someone. I used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they got me through to an actual human at unemployment within an hour. Talking to an agent got my payments fixed the same day. It was the only way I could talk to a live agent after weeks of trying on my own. They also have a helpful video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Is this for real? I've been trying to get through to NY unemployment for 3 weeks with no luck.

Totally real. I was skeptical too but was desperate after spending hours on hold. It saved me from waiting another 2 weeks for my money.

sounds like another scam trying to prey on desperate people... 🤔

Not a scam at all. They just call and wait on hold for you, then connect you when a real person answers. Saved me hours of frustration and I finally got my claim fixed.

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS?

It worked for me! Got through to an agent who explained my payment was reduced because of an old overpayment issue I didn't even know about. Got it resolved that day.

Check if you have any partial days worked or if they're applying an overpayment reduction to your benefits. This happened to me last year - turned out they claimed I was overpaid from 3 months prior and were taking half my weekly amount until it was paid back. The WORST part is they never notified me by mail or email about it!

The half payment thing usually means one of three things: 1. You reported income that offset part of your benefit 2. You have an overpayment they're recouping 3. You answered a question in a way that triggered a partial payment The most common reason is an overpayment situation. NY unemployment system is notorious for suddenly discovering "overpayments" months later and then just taking money without proper notice. You NEED to speak with someone to find out exactly what's happening. I was in this exact situation in 2021. After countless failed attempts to reach someone by phone, I finally used claimyr.com which got me connected to an agent who explained everything. Turns out they miscalculated my benefit rate initially and were adjusting it retroactively. The agent fixed it immediately once I could actually talk to someone. Don't wait on this - partial payments can sometimes indicate your claim has an issue that could eventually lead to complete stoppage if not addressed. Keep trying to reach someone, and document everything including screenshots of your payment history.

Thanks for this detailed response! I hadn't reported any income and answered all questions the same as usual, so I'm guessing it's probably the overpayment thing. I'll definitely try to get through to someone ASAP.

thats exactly what happened to me! they claimed I was overpaid from like 6 months ago and just started taking it without any notice. took me 3 weeks to get someone on the phone to explain it 😤

Did u get a message along with the payment? Sometimes they leave a message in ur account about why the payment is different. Look in the messages section.

I checked but there's nothing new in my messages. The payment history just shows the reduced amount with no explanation. So frustrating!

Ugh NY unemployment is the WORST. I had this happen and it was because somehow they determined I was "overpaid" by like $2000 during the pandemic. Never got any notice, they just started taking half my weekly benefit. Had to fight for MONTHS to get it fixed because it was their error.

THIS!!! They do this all the time and it's impossible to fight without talking to someone. I had to use claimyr.com to finally get someone on the phone after trying for weeks.

had to call literally every day for a week straight. Finally got someone who actually knew what they were doing and they submitted an internal request to review my case. Took another 3 weeks but they eventually fixed it and refunded what they took.

omg this happened to my roommate last month!! it was because of some old overpayment from 2021 that they just now decided to collect on. no warning, no letter, no email... they just started taking half her money! 🤬

Was she able to get it fixed? Or at least find out what caused it?

yeah but it took her like 2 weeks of calling. she had to get up at like 7:55am to start calling right when they opened and even then it took multiple tries

This is probably because of the new quarter change. Every October and April they recalculate benefit amounts based on your base period. Your benefit amount can change if the quarters used in your calculation change. You 100% need to speak with a claims specialist to understand what happened.

This makes sense. They do quarter changes and sometimes don't even tell you. I had mine change by like $75 once because of this. Calling is the only way to get answers.

Thanks! I didn't know about the quarter changes. If you're right, why wouldn't they at least notify us about this? So frustrating.

I've seen this happen when someone forgets they did a partial day of work or gig work and reported it a few weeks earlier, then it catches up to them in the system later. Double check all your certifications for the past few weeks to make sure you didn't accidentally report income.

lmao welcome to ny unemployment where they just make up the rules as they go and you have to spend 34578 hours on hold to talk to someone who doesn't know anything anyway 🤡

I spent 2 hours on hold last week only to get hung up on as soon as someone answered. I almost threw my phone out the window

Try calling your state rep's office. I had a similar issue and couldn't get through to unemployment for weeks. Called my assembly member and their office had a contact at DOL who fixed my issue in 2 days. Worth a shot!

That's a great idea, thank you! Do you just call their main office number?

Yep! Just call their district office, explain your unemployment issue, and ask if they can help. Make sure to have your claim ID and all details ready.

If ur not certifying for a full week that could be why. Like if your benefit week starts on a Monday and you certified from Wednesday-Sunday you'd only get partial payment. Just a thought.

I certified for the full week as always, and haven't started working or anything. That's why it's so strange!
