NY unemployment benefit suddenly cut in half - anyone else having this issue?
Has anyone submitted their weekly certification for the week ending 5/21/2025 and only received half of their normal benefit amount? I certified Sunday night like always, but when I checked my payment history today, it shows only $267 instead of my usual $534. No explanation, no messages, nothing. And before anyone suggests calling the NY unemployment office... we all know how that goes. I've already tried calling 14 times today and either get disconnected or stuck on hold forever. Anyone else experiencing this or know what might be happening? Did I miss some notification about benefit reductions?

This happened to me last month! Turns out they had somehow processed a partial week for me even though I reported no work. Check your payment history screen and see if it shows any earnings or if it lists your certification as "partial week" status. There should be a code next to the payment amount that explains the reduction.

Thanks for replying! I checked the payment history and it does say "partial" next to it, but I definitely didn't report any work. I've been completely unemployed since February. Where exactly do I find these codes you mentioned? I don't see any explanation.

Just checked my email including spam folder - nothing from NYSDOL at all in the past week. It's like they just randomly decided to cut my payment with no explanation.

This is a common issue right now. The system is probably flagging your claim for one of these reasons: 1. You're approaching your Benefit Year Ending (BYE) date 2. You've hit the halfway point in your total benefit amount 3. There's a quarterly wage review happening 4. They're verifying your continued eligibility Check your Monetary Benefit Determination letter (the one that listed your weekly benefit amount). There should be information about your maximum benefit duration and total benefit amount. If you're approaching either limit, this could explain the reduction. You really do need to speak with a claims specialist to resolve this. I know the phone system is frustrating, but it's the only way to get a clear answer.

Thanks for the detailed info. I checked my determination letter and I'm nowhere near my maximum benefits - I've only been on unemployment for about 3 months and was approved for 26 weeks. My BYE date isn't until February 2026. So it must be one of those other reasons you mentioned. Ugh, I guess I have no choice but to keep calling...

Did you try calling yet? Let me know if you get through and what they tell you. I'll do the same if I manage to reach someone.

Have you checked if there were any federal or state changes to unemployment benefits that took effect recently? Sometimes they implement these changes with very little notice. Also, did you answer any certification questions differently this week? Even minor changes to how you answer can trigger benefit recalculations. I'd recommend checking the NY DOL website announcements section. They sometimes post system-wide changes there before updating individual accounts. If multiple people are experiencing this issue, it sounds like a system-wide change rather than something specific to your claim.

I answered all the certification questions exactly the same as usual. Just checked the announcements section on the DOL website and don't see anything about benefit reductions. I'm starting to think this might be a glitch in their system.

After spending HOURS trying to reach someone at the unemployment office last month for a similar issue (they randomly disqualified one of my weeks), I finally used Claimyr.com to get through to a representative. It basically holds your place in line and calls you when an agent is available. Saved me from wasting an entire day hitting redial. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE The agent was able to see that my account had been flagged for a quarterly review (which apparently happens automatically). They fixed it on the spot and I got my back payment within 3 days. Might be worth trying if you can't get through the normal way.

Thanks for the tip! At this point I'll try anything because I really need my full benefit amount to cover rent this month. Did they explain why they didn't notify you about this quarterly review?

The agent said they're supposed to send notices, but with the volume of claims they're processing, some notifications aren't going out. She also mentioned that sometimes the system automatically flags accounts even when it shouldn't. In my case, they thought I had unreported income (I didn't) because of how my previous employer reported my final pay.

If multiple people are reporting this issue in the same week, it's likely a system-wide problem rather than individual claim issues. Sometimes when they implement updates to their system, it can cause payment processing errors that affect lots of people simultaneously.

UPDATE: I finally got through to someone! For anyone else having this issue - it turns out there was a system glitch during the weekend that caused certifications to be processed as partial weeks even when people reported no work. The representative said they're aware of the issue and are working on a fix. They said we should receive the remainder of our benefits within 3-5 business days, and we don't need to do anything on our end. Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions!

I used that Claimyr service that someone mentioned earlier in this thread. Honestly didn't think it would work, but I got a call back with an agent on the line within about 40 minutes. Definitely beat the hours of redialing I was doing before!

Thanks for sharing the resolution! For anyone else experiencing this issue, here are a few important points: 1. If you received a partial payment, don't submit a new certification trying to claim the missing amount - this could complicate your claim 2. Document the partial payment by taking screenshots of your payment history 3. The system should automatically correct itself with the fix they're implementing, but if you don't receive the remainder within 5 business days, you'll need to contact them again 4. This won't affect your total benefit amount or extend your benefit year - it's just a processing delay Glad you were able to get this resolved!

Just checked my account and the additional payment was just deposited this morning! The transaction is labeled as "UI Adjustment" in my payment history. Hopefully yours comes through soon too.
