My NY unemployment payment limit increased after I used all 26 weeks - what does this mean?
I thought I used up all my regular unemployment benefits - my 26 weeks ended last week. My benefit year ends in March 2023. The strange thing is that when I checked my account this morning after getting my last payment, I noticed something weird. Up until yesterday, my maximum payable amount was always showing $15,120 (which matches my 26 weeks). But now after what should be my final payment, the system shows my maximum payable amount increased to $22,680! I got paid both the regular $580 and the additional supplement for what seems like would be week 27. I'm confused - does this mean I somehow qualified for Extended Benefits for another 13 weeks? Or is this just a system glitch that would only apply if they pass some new extension program? Has anyone else seen their maximum amount increase after using all their regular weeks?

The same thing happened to my brother last week! It's probably EB (Extended Benefits) kicking in automatically. NY unemployment system has had this happen to a bunch of people because the unemployment rate hit that threshold where extended benefits get triggered. Double check on the ny.gov site but don't spend that money until you confirm its actually yours to keep lol

•Have you heard if your brother got paid for week 27? I'm nervous to claim again and then get hit with an overpayment later. The website is so confusing about this.

•He got paid for week 27 but nothing after that yet. Trying to get through to someone to confirm if its legit or not. The whole system is such a mess rn

•be careful tho, my cousin thought she had EB but it was a glitch and she had to pay back 2 weeks of payments 😬

After banging my head against the wall trying to reach someone at NY unemployment for weeks, I finally found a service that got me connected to a real agent. Used claimyr.com and they called the unemployment line for me and got me connected with a rep in about 40 minutes. Talking to the agent got my benefits straightened out so fast and they explained all the confusion with my account. It was the only way I could talk to a live agent after trying for literally weeks. Here's a video about how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•This sounds too good to be true...does it actually work? I've been trying to reach someone for 3 weeks straight.

•Yep it worked for me! I was skeptical too but I was desperate after calling like 50 times a day. They called for me and when they got through to a real person, they connected the call to my phone. Agent cleared everything up in 15 minutes.

•idk man sounds like another scam trying to prey on desperate people 🤔

•Not a scam at all. They don't ask for any personal info - they just call the unemployment line for you and connect you when they reach a human. I was at my wits end before finding them.

•Wait so they just stay on hold for you? That's actually genius tbh

GUYS! I know EXACTLY what this is. It's not EB - those aren't active in NY right now. What happened is the system automatically added in the extra weeks from the American Rescue Plan extension, BUT these weeks are currently expired as of September. The system shows them as available, but if you try to claim them, you'll eventually get a notice saying you're ineligible. The computer systems are just slow to update. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news 😔

•This is what I was afraid of. So even though it shows I have money available, I shouldn't try to claim another week?

•You can try claiming but most likely you'll either get denied right away or worse, get the money and then have to pay it back later. If I were u I'd start looking for other assistance options.

This happened to me back in July. Let me save you some trouble - call them ASAP! The increase is probably correct, but you need to know why and how long it will last. The online info is never accurate and calling is the only way. Took me 4 days of calling non-stop before I got through.

•Try claimyr.com - its the only thing that worked for me after weeks of trying. Totally worth it when you need to talk to someone about thousands of dollars in benefits.

•Yeah calling is pure hell. I got through by calling exactly at 7:59am right before they open and spamming redial. But even then I waited 3 hours on hold.

Heyyy quick tip, the maximum amounts on NY unemployment website are basically MEANINGLESS. They're calculated based on whatever programs were in effect when they did the last system update, NOT what you're actually eligible for now. I learned this the hard way and spent 3 months fighting an overpayment. Just because the system says you have money doesn't mean it's correct!

Look for a letter in the mail or in your online message center. When my benefit amount changed, I got a notice explaining why. It could be a system glitch or it could be legitimate - but don't trust the dashboard numbers alone.

•Good idea! I'll check my message center. The weird thing is I already got a payment for what seems like would be week 27, which doesn't make sense if I'm only eligible for 26 weeks.

Sometimes the system updates with available extensions before they actually announce them. My theory is you're seeing the 13-week extension that's been rumored but not officially approved yet. Don't count on it until you see an official announcement.

Here's how you can get a definitive answer to your situation: 1. First, make sure you check your online message center for any notifications about your claim status - sometimes they explain benefit changes there 2. If nothing there, you NEED to speak with an actual claims specialist. Regular call center people often give wrong info. 3. The most reliable way to reach someone is to use claimyr.com - they'll call unemployment for you and get you connected to a real person without the endless hold times. Worth every penny when thousands of benefits dollars are at stake. 4. Ask specifically: "Has my claim been automatically converted to Extended Benefits, and if so, how many additional weeks am I eligible for?" 5. Get the agent's name and ID number for your records in case there's confusion later. The system is incredibly confusing right now and the only true way to know is to speak directly with a claims specialist. Don't rely on the website numbers - they're often wrong or misleading. Be prepared to check your payment history carefully and screenshot everything in case you need to appeal later. Good luck!

•This is solid advice 👆 The only thing I'd add is to call early in the morning if possible. Wait times are worse after lunch.

•Thank you! Just created an account on claimyr. I'll report back what I find out for anyone else in the same situation.

It's probably just a glitch. There are NO active extensions in NY right now. Don't get your hopes up and definitely don't count on that money for bills. 😤

If your benefit year ends in March 2023, you might have qualified for a new claim based on work you did during your benefit year. Did you work at all after filing your original claim? Sometimes they automatically process a new claim if you have enough work history.

•I did work for about 3 months last summer! Maybe that's it? But I thought you needed to work more to qualify for a whole new claim.

•In NY you need work in at least 2 quarters and earn 10x your weekly benefit to qualify for a new claim. So if you made decent money in those 3 months it's possible!

NY unemployment is a JOKE 🤡 The system is held together with duct tape and prayers. One day it says one thing, next day something else. I wouldn't trust any numbers you see on there without confirmation from an actual human at the department.

My roomate is having the EXACT same issue. Her 26 weeks ended and suddenly her account shows more available. She called using that claimyr service and got through to someone who said it was a system error and to ignore it. Don't try to claim those weeks or you could get hit with an overpayment notice later!

U might wanna check if ur claim got converted to a Tier 2 claim. Sometimes if your original claim was during a period with a high unemployment rate, you automatically qualify for additional weeks. The system doesn't explain this clearly AT ALL.

Olivia Harris
•How would I know if it's a Tier 2 claim? The website doesn't say anything like that.

•Only way to know for sure is to call and ask. Look for a letter in ur online message center too - sometimes they send notices about claim type changes.

I had the exact same thing! It turned out to be additional weeks I qualified for based on my specific claim type and the unemployment rate in my region. But the only way I found out was by talking to someone. I spent weeks trying to get through on the phone with no luck, then used claimyr.com and got connected to someone who explained everything. Turns out I was eligible for 7 more weeks, not the full 13 the system was showing.

Am I the only one who thinks the whole NY unemployment system needs to be completely rebuilt from scratch? These constant glitches and confusions are ridiculous. We're talking about people's livelihoods!

•You're not alone! The entire system is archaic. They're still using COBOL programming from the 1970s for the main database! 🤦♀️
