Filing NY unemployment taxes without my 1099G - can I just use my bank deposits instead?

I need to file my taxes but I can't find the 1099G form that NY unemployment should have sent. I checked my online account but the documents section is empty. I've tried calling for 2 weeks but can't get through to anyone. I know exactly what I received from September through December (about $3,150 total) because I kept track of all the deposits in my bank statements. Can I just use those deposit amounts on my tax return? Will the IRS flag this if the numbers don't match exactly with what NY unemployment reported? I don't want to wait any longer to file because I'm expecting a refund that I really need for some overdue bills.

You should be able to access your 1099G online. Login to your ny unemployment account, go to 'My Documents' and it should be there. Worked for me last week when I had the same issue.

I tried that already. My documents section is completely empty - nothing from this year or even last year. It's like they never uploaded anything to my account.

Same exact problem here. My documents folder is just blank. Called 50+ times and can't get through.

Weird, maybe try clearing your browser cache or using a different browser? Sometimes the unemployment website is just broken depending what you're using.

After struggling to get my 1099G for weeks, I finally found a service called claimyr.com that got me through to an actual person at unemployment. Talking to an agent got my documents released so fast, and they were able to email me my 1099G the same day. Best thing I've done to get this tax headache resolved! Here's a video about how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Is this for real? sounds too good to be true tbh

Yeah it actually works. They basically call for you and wait on hold, then when someone answers they connect you. I was skeptical too but I was desperate after trying to call for 3 weeks straight.

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? I've been trying to reach someone for MONTHS 😩

100% worked for me. Got through to someone in about 45 mins when I had been trying on my own for weeks. They connected me directly to an agent who fixed my issue and emailed my 1099G.

Look I get the skepticism, I felt the same way. But talking to an agent got my $ situation fixed so quickly it was totally worth it. Just sharing what worked for me 🤷‍♀️

DO NOT just use your bank deposits! The 1099G includes taxes withheld so the amount on the form isn't the same as what was deposited. You need the actual form or you'll mess up your taxes! Call the dedicated tax document line: 888-209-8124. Press 2 then 5 if I remember correctly.

Thanks for the warning. That's the number I've been calling but it's always busy or disconnects me after being on hold forever. Will keep trying I guess...

Try calling right when they open at 8:00am. That's how I finally got through after 9 days of trying.

You definitely need the official 1099G. The IRS gets a copy of what was reported for you, and if your numbers don't match exactly, you could get flagged for audit. Not worth the risk.

Check your spam/junk folder in your email! NY unemployment sent mine electronically and it went straight to spam. Almost missed it.

Good idea, just checked all my folders including spam but nothing there from NY unemployment 😕

Here's a comprehensive guide to getting your 1099G from NY unemployment since this is a common issue: First, try logging in through a desktop computer rather than mobile - the mobile site often doesn't show documents properly. If that doesn't work, try requesting a duplicate by calling their automated system at 1-888-209-8124. Follow the prompts for tax documents. If you still can't get through, your best option is to speak directly with an agent. Many of us have had success using claimyr.com which gets you past the hold times and connects you with a live agent. Once you speak to someone, they can email your 1099G immediately or tell you why it hasn't been generated yet. As others have said, DO NOT estimate based on your deposits. The 1099G includes tax withholding info that you need for accurate filing. Also worth noting that if you filed for an extension, you have until October to get this sorted out - though I understand wanting your refund sooner rather than later!

Thank you SO much for this detailed response! I'm going to try the desktop site first, then the automated line. If those don't work, I'll check out that claimyr service.

Seconding the claimyr recommendation - it's the only way I managed to get through after literal months of trying. Talking to an actual human at unemployment fixed everything in 10 minutes.

You might be able to create an account on the IRS website and view the information that was reported to them. They should have a record of what NY sent them about your benefits.

I requested a new 1099G back in February and STILL havent received it. The whole system is a joke! 🤬

took me 3 months to get mine last year. NY unemployment is the worst.

That's straight up ridiculous! Have you tried going to an actual office in person? Sometimes that's the only way to get results with these clowns.

File an extension with the IRS so you don't get penalized for late filing while you're waiting for the form. Thatll give you till October to sort this out.

I really need my refund sooner though... I was counting on that money for bills that are already overdue.
