Do I need to wait for NY unemployment 1099-G for partial year benefits before filing taxes?

I only collected NY unemployment benefits for a couple months last year and had taxes taken out during each payment. Do I still need to wait until I get my 1099-G form before I can file my 2025 taxes? I'm trying to get my return in early but don't want to mess anything up. Has anyone received their 1099-G from unemployment yet? The tax deadline is getting closer and I haven't gotten anything in the mail or in my online account.

yep you definitely need to wait for the 1099-G. its required even if you only got benefits for a short time and had taxes taken out. I think they usually send them out by end of January but sometimes they're late

Thanks for the quick answer! End of January is cutting it close since I like to file early. Do you know if they post them online before mailing them out?

You absolutely need to wait for your 1099-G before filing your taxes, regardless of how long you collected benefits or whether you had taxes withheld. The 1099-G shows your total unemployment compensation and any federal tax withheld, which must be reported on your tax return. For 2025 tax year (for taxes due April 2026), NYSDOL is required to make 1099-G forms available by January 31, 2026. They typically post them online in your NY.gov account under the 1099-G tax form section before mailing physical copies. If it's already February and you haven't received it, you can: 1. Check your NY.gov account first 2. Call the dedicated 1099-G hotline at 888-209-8124 3. Request a duplicate if needed Filing without this information could result in a discrepancy that might trigger an audit or delay your refund.

Do they ALWAYS send a paper copy in the mail?? I've been checking my online account obsessively and nothing yet, but I'm worried the paper copy got lost somewhere. What happens if you file without it? Will the IRS automatically know???

I tried filing my taxes before getting the 1099-G last year and it was a huge mistake. The IRS sent me a notice months later that my reported unemployment income didn't match their records. Had to file an amended return and pay a penalty. NYSDOL is required to make them available by January 31st, but they're usually available online around mid-January. Log into your NY.gov account and look under "Unemployment Services" then "View 1099-G Tax Form". Sometimes the online version is available weeks before the paper copy arrives.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I definitely don't want to deal with penalties or amendments. I'll keep checking my online account daily. Hopefully they'll post it soon.

I just checked mine and nothing yet. Do they release them in batches or something? Maybe they're doing it alphabetically.

You 100% need to wait for the 1099-G even for partial year benefits. The NYSDOL phone system is COMPLETELY useless for getting any help with this - I've been trying for days to request a duplicate because I never got mine. The automated system keeps disconnecting me and when I finally got through yesterday, I was on hold for 2 HOURS before getting hung up on!!! I found a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual agent in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE. The agent was able to confirm my 1099-G is available in my online account now, even though the system never notified me. Saved me days of frustration!

I've been trying to get through on the phone too with no luck. Thanks for the tip about Claimyr, I might try it if my 1099-G doesn't show up online in the next couple of days. The hold times are absolutely ridiculous.

I think they're just slow this year. my friend got hers but I haven't yet. we both had unemployment for about the same amount of time (3 months). also had taxes taken out every week but still need the form to file! its super annoying but yea gotta wait

also dont forget that even tho you had taxes taken out it might not have been enough! i got hit with a surprise tax bill last year cuz they only took out 10% but i needed more withheld based on my other income. just a heads up!!!

Oh wow, that's a really good point. I didn't even think about that. I opted for the maximum withholding option but I guess I'll need to see what the actual numbers look like on the 1099-G. Thanks for the warning!

One more thing to check - make sure your mailing address is up to date in your NY.gov account. If you moved during the year and didn't update your address, your paper 1099-G might be sent to your old address. You can update your address in your online account settings. Also, the NYSDOL typically posts a notification banner on their website when all 1099-Gs have been issued. Based on past years, most should be available online by mid-January, with paper copies arriving by early February.

I'm in the same boat!!! Been checking my mailbox every day and my online account like 20 times a day! Last year I didn't get mine until February 7th and it was super stressful because I had everything else ready to file. Is there any way to estimate what will be on the form based on our payment history? I kept all my payment records but don't know if that's enough for the IRS??

While you technically could add up all your payments to estimate the total, the IRS specifically matches your tax return against the official 1099-G information provided by NYSDOL. Using your own calculations rather than the official form is risky, as even small discrepancies can trigger review flags. Best to wait for the official document, which NYSDOL is legally required to provide by January 31st.

Back in 2023 I never got my 1099-G in the mail for some reason but it was in my online account the whole time! Check there first. Also make sure you're looking in the right section - it's not super obvious where they put it. Go to Unemployment Services and look for "1099-G Tax Forms" in the menu. Took me forever to find it the first time.

UPDATE: Mine just appeared in my online account! For anyone still waiting, definitely keep checking your NY.gov account. Under Unemployment Services there's a section specifically for tax forms. I never got an email notification that it was ready, just happened to check and it's there now. Thanks everyone for your help!
