Do I need to wait for my 1099-G from NY unemployment to file taxes if I only claimed for 3 months?

I was on unemployment for just a few months in the spring when my company downsized. I had them withhold taxes from my payments. Now it's tax season and I'm trying to figure out if I need to wait for my 1099-G form from unemployment before filing my taxes. I checked my online account and don't see it available yet. Has anyone received their 1099-G for 2021 already? Also wondering if there's a way to estimate what was paid to me if I decide to file before the form arrives. I'm usually an early filer and don't want to wait until the last minute.

Yes, you absolutely need to wait for the 1099-G form. It has the exact amount you received and taxes withheld, which you need for your tax return. If you file without it or estimate, you'll likely have to amend your return later. The IRS computers will flag any discrepancies between what you report and what unemployment reports to them. NY usually sends them out by January 31st, but they can be late. Check your online account again in a few days - sometimes they're available electronically before the paper copy arrives.

Damn, I was hoping to file earlier and get my refund sooner. Do you know if there's a specific section of the website where I should be looking for the 1099-G?

Log into your NY unemployment account and look for a section called "Tax Forms" or "1099-G". Sometimes its under a tab called "Payment History" or something similar. If you don't see it there by feb 7, call them.

Thanks! I'll check again next week.

After weeks of trying to reach someone at ny unemployment about my missing 1099-G, I finally got through using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com). It was the only way I could actually talk to a live agent. They called and stayed on hold, then connected me when an agent picked up. Talking to the agent got my tax forms situation resolved in minutes - best money I've spent to avoid tax filing delays! Here's a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Is this for real? I've been trying to get through for 2 weeks about my 1099 issues...

100% worked for me. I was skeptical too but after trying to call myself for days I gave it a shot. Got connected to a rep in about 1.5 hrs instead of doing the call/hangup/redial game myself all day.

sounds too good to be true... another unemployment 'miracle solution' 🙄

not a miracle, just a service that does the calling and waiting for you. they don't solve your actual unemployment issues - they just get you connected to a human who can.

I just got my 1099-G yesterday in the mail. They're definitely sending them out now, so yours should arrive soon. But yes, you need it to file accurately. The form shows your total benefits and withholding. You can't just guess those numbers.

You should be able to view your 1099-G online. I didn't get mine in the mail but found it in my NY unemployment account under Tax Statements. You definitely need to report the exact figures or the IRS will come for ya 😂

This! I never get the paper one in the mail anymore. Always just download it from the portal.

I've looked everywhere in my account and don't see it yet. Maybe they're still uploading them?

I had the same question last year. You DEF need to wait for the 1099-G. Even with tax withholding, you might still owe additional taxes on unemployment benefits (learned this the hard way). If you're really desperate to file early, you can try calling the unemployment office to get the numbers, but good luck gettin through lol.

calling is literally impossible. I tried for 2 weeks straight and couldn't get a human being on the line.

Try claimyr.com - they got me through to someone last week when I was dealing with a similar issue. They call and wait on hold for you.

Here's what I know as someone who's been through this: YES - you absolutely need the 1099-G form for accuracy. NO - don't estimate or guess the numbers. The IRS computers match what you report to what NY reports. TIMELINE - By law they must provide it by Jan 31st, but NY is notoriously slow. ACCESS OPTIONS: 1. Check your online account - Log in and look under tax documents 2. Wait for mail - Could take until mid-February 3. Call to request - Nearly impossible to get through on your own 4. Use claimyr.com to get connected to an agent who can help If you claimed for only a few months and had taxes withheld, you're in better shape than most. But you still need the exact figures for your tax return. If you're due a big refund from your regular job, it might be worth waiting for this form rather than amending later and delaying your entire refund.

This is super helpful, thank you! 🙌

I'm still waiting for mine too. The ny unemployment website is terrible... they're probably sending them out on internet explorer speed 🤣

0 coins

LMAO internet explorer speed is so accurate for how the unemployment system works 💀

They probably mail them using carrier pigeons tbh

And the pigeons are on unemployment too 😂

WARNING: Don't file without it! I did that last year and had to amend my return which delayed my refund by 6 MONTHS. Not worth it.

if u look at your payment history tab in your account, you can add up all the payments yourself to estimate. but you still need the official form to file correctly. taxes on unemployment can be complicated and the withholding isnt always enough.

That's a good idea, at least I'll have an estimate of what to expect. Thanks!

Last year they extended the tax filing deadline because of covid stuff, wonder if they'll do that again? Would give more time for these forms to arrive.

0 coins

Doubtful. Everything is going back to normal deadlines this year from what I've read.

Wait... am I the only one who didn't know we'd get a 1099-G? I thought since they withheld taxes I didn't need to report it 😳 Now I'm worried about my 2020 return too...

0 coins

Yikes - unemployment is always taxable income, withheld or not. You definitely need to report it. You should probably amend your prior return if you didn't include it!

0 coins

OMG I'm screwed. How do I get my old 1099-G from last year??

0 coins

You can request prior year 1099-Gs by calling unemployment. I had the same issue and used claimyr.com to get through to an agent who emailed me my old forms within minutes.

Might be an unpopular opinion but... if you only collected for a few months and had taxes withheld, and really need your refund asap, you could file with your best estimate and then amend later if needed. Just make sure your estimate is reasonable based on your payment history.

0 coins

This is terrible advice. The IRS will flag the return when the numbers don't match what NY reports, and it could delay processing by months.

0 coins

hence why I said unpopular opinion 🤷‍♂️ sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do

NYS is usually pretty good about posting them online. Check your unemployment account and see if there's a "tax documents" section. You 100% need this form before filing.

0 coins

You need to wait for the correct form or you'll mess up your taxes. BTW does anyone know if they're still doing that tax break on unemployment benefits this year like they did for 2020? That saved me so much last year.

0 coins

That was only for 2020 tax year. No unemployment tax break for 2021 unfortunately.

ugh that sucks. thanks for the info tho
