NY unemployment 1099 forms available now - quick download instructions

Just got my NY unemployment 1099-G form for tax filing! I know a lot of people struggle to find this every year so I wanted to give everyone a heads up that they're available now in your online account. Don't wait until the last minute like I did last year! Just log into your NY.gov ID, go to unemployment services, then look for 'Get your 1099-G form' in the menu. Takes like 30 seconds. You know the IRS deadline will be here before we know it!

Thanks for the reminder! Just to add some important details - you can access your 1099-G by logging into your NY.gov account, selecting 'Unemployment Services' and then clicking on 'Get Your NYS 1099-G Form' from the menu options. The system lets you view forms from the past 4 years. If you need an older form or don't have online access, you can request one by calling 888-209-8124. Remember that if you received benefits in 2024, this is a required tax document!

Exactly! And if anyone has trouble seeing their 1099 online, clear your browser cache or try a different browser. That fixed it for me last year when Chrome kept giving me errors.

i tried logging in but cant remember my password. so frustrating! does anybody know if they still mail these out or is it only online now?

They've mostly moved to online-only delivery to save costs, but you can request a paper copy by calling the NYSDOL at 888-209-8124. Be prepared for a long wait time though! If you can't get through, use the 'Forgot Password' link on the NY.gov login page - they'll send a reset link to your email.

GOOD LOOKING OUT!! I swear they make this stuff hard to find on purpose! Last year I had to file an amended return because I forgot about my unemployment income and it cost me an extra $175 in tax prep fees. They should TEXT people when these forms are ready!!!!

Totally agree! I had the exact same issue last year. Had to wait on hold FOREVER trying to get an agent to help me access my form. Finally gave up and found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an unemployment agent in about 20 minutes instead of spending hours redialing. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE - saved my sanity when I was desperate to get my tax docs before filing.

Do we need to request the 1099 or does it automatically show up in our account? I haven't collected since March but still need the form.

It should automatically be available in your online account by January 31st if you received benefits in 2024. Even if you only collected for part of the year, they'll generate a form. Just make sure your address is updated in the system if you've moved since March.

My 1099-G shows a higher amount than I actually received??? It says I got $6,780 but I only got benefits for like 8 weeks at $540/week which should be around $4,320. Has anyone else noticed errors on their form? I'm freaking out because I don't want to be taxed on money I never received!

This could be because the 1099-G shows the TOTAL benefit amount before any tax withholding or other deductions. Check your payment history to see if you had taxes withheld or if there were other adjustments. If there's still a discrepancy, you should contact NYSDOL immediately to request a corrected form. Document everything carefully for your records.

anybody know if we have to pay taxes on unemployment in ny state or just federal?

You have to pay BOTH federal and New York State taxes on unemployment benefits. There's no special exemption for 2024 like there was during the pandemic. Make sure you're prepared for this when filing both returns!

What happens if I don't receive my 1099-G? I collected benefits for two months in 2024 but don't see anything in my account yet. Will they mail me one automatically? I'm worried because I'm trying to file my taxes early to get my refund.

THEY SHOULD BE AVAILABLE NOW! Mine was there when I checked this morning. Try logging out and back in, sometimes the system is glitchy. If it's still not there by February 1st, you'll need to call them - good luck with that nightmare! 🙄

Is the 1099-G also available if you had a pending claim that was eventually denied? I had a complicated situation where I filed, received 2 payments, then they determined I wasn't eligible and I had to pay it back. Not sure if I'll get a form or if I need to report anything.

Great question! If you repaid benefits in the same year you received them, your 1099-G should reflect only the net amount (if any). However, if you received payments in 2024 but repaid in 2025, you'll still get a 1099-G for the full amount received in 2024. In that case, you can claim the repayment as an itemized deduction or tax credit when you file your 2025 taxes next year. It's a bit complicated, so you might want to consult with a tax professional about your specific situation.

Just wanted to update - I noticed they've also added a feature where you can download ALL your previous years' 1099-G forms at once. Super helpful if you need to amend old returns or just want to keep your records organized!

That's really good to know! Where exactly do you see that option? I can only find the current year when I log in.
