Can I file NY unemployment 1099-G forms for both 2023 and 2024 tax years at the same time?
I'm trying to get caught up on my taxes and need to know if I can file NY unemployment 1099-G forms for both 2023 and 2024 at the same time? Or am I only allowed to file the current tax year (2024)? I received benefits during both years but never got around to filing last year's taxes. The NY unemployment website is confusing me and I don't want to mess this up since I'm already behind. Does anyone know if there's a time limit for requesting previous years' 1099-G forms?

Yes, you can definitely request 1099-G forms for both 2023 and 2024 tax years. The NYSDOL keeps these records for several years. You'll need to access your NY.gov account and go to the 1099-G section where you can view and print forms from previous years. Look for the dropdown menu that lets you select the tax year. If you don't see the option online, you can call NYSDOL and specifically request the prior year forms.

•Thanks for the info! I've been trying to find that dropdown menu but the site keeps freezing up when I get to that page. Ugh, so frustrating!!

•Did you eventually get through? I'm worried about tax penalties if I wait much longer.

Just to add some useful info - you can request 1099-G forms going back up to 4 years. I had to do this last year when my accountant discovered I was missing documentation from a prior year. The IRS requires that you report ALL unemployment income, even from previous years. So yes, you definitely need both years' forms. After struggling to get through on the phone for days, I finally discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com) which got me connected to an actual NY unemployment agent in about 20 minutes instead of spending hours redialing. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE - it was honestly worth it to avoid the frustration of constant busy signals. The agent was able to email me all my missing 1099-G forms the same day.

•Is this legit? Sounds too good to be true honestly. I've been trying to reach unemployment for WEEKS about my missing 1099.

•It's definitely legit. I was skeptical too, but I was desperate after trying for days to get through. They basically keep calling the department for you until they get through, then connect you directly with the agent. Saved me hours of frustration.

I work as a tax preparer, and I deal with this situation frequently. Here's what you need to know: 1. You MUST report all unemployment income to the IRS, regardless of which year it was received 2. You can request 1099-G forms for previous years (typically up to 6 years back) 3. If you file without including the unemployment income, you risk receiving a CP2000 notice from the IRS for underreported income 4. There's no time limit for requesting the forms, but there IS a time limit for amending previous tax returns (generally 3 years from the original filing deadline) If you can't access the forms online, calling is your best option. Request both years' forms, and make sure you have your NY.gov ID, SSN, and identity verification information ready when you call.

•This is really helpful, thank you. Will I face penalties for filing last year's taxes late? I'm really worried about that part.

•Yes, there are typically three types of penalties for late filing: 1. Failure-to-file penalty (usually 5% of unpaid taxes per month) 2. Failure-to-pay penalty (usually 0.5% per month) 3. Interest on unpaid tax amount However, if you're due a refund, there's generally no penalty for filing late (though you'll delay getting your refund). I'd recommend filing as soon as possible to minimize additional penalties and interest. You might also qualify for penalty abatement if this is your first time filing late.

THEY MAKE THIS INTENTIONALLY DIFFICULT!!! I swear the system is designed to frustrate people so they give up. I went through this exact same thing and spent THREE DAYS trying to get someone on the phone. The website is useless - half the links don't work and when they do, the information is outdated. When I finally got through, the person told me they could have just mailed the forms automatically if I had checked some box buried in the settings menu. RIDICULOUS!!!

•Omg that's so frustrating! Did they tell you where that checkbox is? Maybe I can find it.

•It's somewhere in your account preferences under document delivery options or something like that. But honestly, at this point you're probably better off just calling since you need the past forms too. Good luck getting through though!!! 🙄

Hey there! Just wanted to let you know that I was in the exact same situation last month. I needed both my 2023 and 2024 1099-G forms. I found that if you go to your NY.gov account, then click on "Unemployment Services," then "Payment History," and then there should be a tab that says "1099-G Information." From there, you can select different tax years from a dropdown menu. If the website isn't working (which happens A LOT lol), definitely call them. I finally got through after trying early in the morning (like right when they open at 8am).

•Thanks! I'll try the early morning trick tomorrow. The website just keeps giving me error messages. Did you need to have any specific information ready when you called?

•Yes! Have your NY.gov ID, the last 4 digits of your social, your PIN number, and your mailing address ready. They'll ask for all of that. And be prepared to wait even after getting through - I was on hold for about 40 minutes before talking to someone.

Just wanted to follow up and see if you were able to get your 1099-G forms? Did you try calling again or use any of the suggestions here?

•I ended up using that Claimyr service you mentioned and got through to NYSDOL in about 25 minutes! The agent was actually super helpful and is sending both years' 1099-G forms to my email. Should have them by tomorrow. Thanks again for the recommendation - saved me so much frustration!

•Great to hear you got it resolved! Just make sure to keep copies of those forms with your tax records. The IRS can audit returns for up to 3 years (sometimes longer), so having documentation of all your unemployment income is important.
