Filing NY unemployment taxes without my 1099G - can I just use my bank deposits instead?

I need to file my taxes but I can't find the 1099G form that NY unemployment should have sent. I checked my online account but the documents section is empty. I've tried calling for 2 weeks but can't get through to anyone. I know exactly what I received from September through December (about $3,150 total) because I kept track of all the deposits in my bank statements. Can I just use those deposit amounts on my tax return? Will the IRS flag this if the numbers don't match exactly with what NY unemployment reported? I don't want to wait any longer to file because I'm expecting a refund that I really need for some overdue bills.

File an extension with the IRS so you don't get penalized for late filing while you're waiting for the form. Thatll give you till October to sort this out.

Where to cash NY unemployment tourism checks without a bank account?

I recently got approved for unemployment benefits in April after losing my job in the tourism industry back in February. The problem is I don't have a bank account right now (had some issues with overdraft fees at my last bank and they closed my account). I just got my first unemployment check in the mail yesterday, but I'm struggling to figure out where I can cash it without paying ridiculous fees. I tried going to the bank it's drawn on but they wanted to charge me $25 just to cash it! Walmart wanted like $8 which is still a lot. Does anyone know if there's somewhere in New York where I can cash these unemployment checks for free or at least for a smaller fee? I really need every dollar right now since I'm behind on rent by 3 weeks. The check is for $585 and I can't afford to lose any of that to fees.

This is why we need a public banking option! People without bank accounts pay hundreds or even thousands in check cashing fees every year. Its a poverty tax.

Have you tried KeyBank? Since they're the bank that NY unemployment uses for their debit card program, they might cash the checks for free. Worth calling them to ask.

Anyone else still waiting for their NY unemployment tourism relief check?

So back in October I got an email saying I qualified for this tourism relief payment from ny unemployment since I used to work at a hotel before the shutdown. They said payments would start going out in November. It's now the end of February and I haven't gotten anything in the mail or direct deposit. I've tried calling about 30 times but can never get through to a real person. The website says my application was approved and payment is "pending" but it's been saying that for 3 months. Anyone else still waiting or actually received their payment? Starting to think this whole thing was just for show and nobody's actually getting paid...

I was stuck in the exact same situation, OP. I'm guessing you filed on your own? I gave up after months of no payment and ended up contacting my state assemblyman's office. They have direct lines to DOL and got my payment unstuck within a week. Worth a try!

Yep! Just google your address + NY assembly member. Call their office and ask to speak with whoever handles DOL cases. They'll need your name, contact info, and claim ID. They've seen tons of these tourism payment issues.

Anyone else struggling to deposit NY unemployment tourism relief checks?

So I received one of those tourism relief checks from ny unemployment last week. Went to deposit it at my credit union yesterday and they said they couldn't accept it because of 'verification issues' whatever that means. Called another bank and they said something about the check looking different than standard unemployment checks? Has anyone else run into this problem? The teller made me feel like I was trying to pull a fast one but this is a legit check that came in the mail with all the official seals and everything. I really need this money to cover my car payment that's due next week. Anyone know what I should do or if theres a special way to deposit these checks?

ID.me verification blocked for ny unemployment - someone used my identity in California

I need serious help with id.me verification for my ny unemployment claim. Found out that someone in California has been using my identity to file unemployment claims back in August. I tried to verify through ID.me for my legitimate New York claim last week, but the system kept rejecting me saying there's already an account with my information. Called ID.me support and they confirmed someone in California already verified using my SSN and personal info. I've never even been to California! Now I can't access my benefits in New York and my claim is on hold until I can verify. Called ny unemployment 15 times but can't get through to anyone who can help with identity theft issues. Already filed a police report and froze my credit, but still no idea how to get my benefits flowing. Been out of work since November and my savings are almost gone. Has anyone dealt with cross-state identity theft with unemployment? What can I even do at this point?

OK heres what u need to do - happened to me & my roomate both. The BIG mistake is trying to create a NEW id.me account. Instead: 1) Go to id.me and click "sign in" 2) Click "forgot password" and use your email 3) They'll send reset link 4) Once in, immediately go to security settings 5) Turn on ALL security features (2-factor) 6) Go to help section, report account compromised 7) They'll walk you through recovery process Basically you need to RECOVER the fraudulent account not make a new one. Then id.me will give you docs to send to NY unemployment showing you're the real person.

Unfortunately this is happening EVERYWHERE right now. My advice after going through this nightmare myself: 1. First priority is getting control of your ID.me account following what @profile14 suggested 2. Call NY unemployment ONLY using Claimyr (claimyr.com) - saved me 3+ hours of hold time 3. Request to speak with a supervisor immediately - regular agents CAN'T help with this 4. Have all documentation ready: police report, FTC report, credit freeze confirmations 5. Be extremely persistent! Don't take no for an answer! 6. If supervisor says they can't help, hang up and try again (seriously) 7. Once you get the right person, they can override the ID.me issue It took me 5 calls but I finally got someone who knew exactly what to do. They have a specific procedure for cross-state identity theft cases, but most agents don't know about it. Only supervisors or the fraud department can help. Don't waste time with regular agents. Also - immediately check if tax returns were filed in your name! This is usually the next step in the scam after unemployment fraud. Get an IP PIN from the IRS ASAP.

Just talking to the supervisor was enough in my case. They have an internal process they can follow once they confirm you're the real person. Make sure to ask them to note your account that you're a victim of cross-state identity theft!
