Have you contacted your new employer? Some companies can advance you part of your first paycheck if you explain the situation, especially if you've already signed all the paperwork and have a definite start date.
I actually just emailed HR about this! Waiting to hear back, but that would be amazing if they could help out.
This happened to my sister and she got through to someone at NY unemployment by using claimyr.com - it's the only thing that worked after days of trying. Agent told her about a few emergency programs she could apply for while waiting for her new job.
The witholding on unemployment is a flat 10% but ur actual tax bracket might be like 22% or 24% depending on ur total income. Plus they don't withhold state tax AT ALL. its totally misleading and they know it!!!
This happened to me & my wife. We both lost our retail jobs and got UE in 2021. Had a CPA explain that the withholding is just 10% federal and doesn't account for state taxes or your actual tax bracket. Biggest advice: adjust your W-4 at your current job to withhold extra if you're still getting unemployment.
This is actually really smart advice. I'm gonna do this at my new job now.
wait we're getting refunds on unemployment taxes? I had no idea! is this for everyone who got unemployment in ny last year??
yep! ny passed a law exempting some unemployment benefits from state taxes. check ur mail, they sent notices about it
omg thank you! havent checked my mail in weeks lol
sounds like one of those ads that pops up everywhere. anyone ACTUALLY try this Claimyr thing? I see a few people mentioning it but im suspicious of anything that sounds too good to be true
If you're trying to call the unemployment office and can't get through (which is basically guaranteed), try using claimyr.com - it's this service that calls for you and connects you when a human answers. Without it I would never have gotten my identity theft issue fixed. The NY unemployment phone system is designed to make you give up. When I finally got through, they told me they're seeing TONS of these cases.
gonna try this, been trying to reach someone for 2 weeks about the same issue
i work at a tax prep office and we're seeing SOOO many cases like this right now. like 5-10 clients per week getting 1099-Gs for unemployment they never received. Make sure you dispute this before tax time or you'll be stuck sorting it out with the IRS too which is even more of a nightmare 💀

so I see we're all living the same nightmare... the backpay system is criminal. took me 7 call attempts using claimyr.com before I got someone who actually knew what they were talking about. the first 6 agents had no idea how to handle backdating.

i work in a related field (not unemployment but similar govt agency) and I'll tell you a secret - the agents CAN see your backpay status but many don't know how to access that screen in the system. Ask specifically for someone who can check the "payment history backend" not just the regular payment screen.

•This is super helpful insider info! Is there specific terminology I should use to make sure I get to the right person?

•Ask for a "tier 2 payment specialist" or someone who can access the "payment adjudication system" - those keywords might help get you to the right department. Good luck!
