Here's a weird tip that worked for me: contact your state senator or assembly member. They have staff dedicated to helping constituents with state agency issues. My fraud case was resolved in 3 weeks after my senator's office got involved. Before that I spent 2 months getting nowhere with NYSDOL directly.
Can we talk about how BROKEN the NY unemployment system is??? Like how hard would it be to verify someone's identity BEFORE sending them thousands of dollars? The fact that this is happening to so many people is just proof that the entire system needs to be rebuilt from the ground up.
For real. During covid they were so overwhelmed they basically approved everyone and now we're all paying the price with rampant fraud.
just got mine after TWO AND A HALF months lmaooo. the envelope was dated 3 weeks ago so it's been sitting in postal hell too. ny unemployment AND usps both failing us 👏👏👏
I'm an accountant and see this issue ALL THE TIME with unemployment benefits. Here's what you need to know: 1. Yes, unemployment is fully taxable income at both federal and state levels 2. The default in NY is NO withholding (dumb, I know) 3. Even if you set up withholding, they only take 10% for federal which is often not enough 4. You can still set up withholding now for any future payments 5. For the taxes you owe now, definitely set up a payment plan with the IRS Also, many of my clients have had success using Claimyr.com to actually get through to an unemployment agent to help navigate these issues. When you need to talk to someone directly at unemployment, it's worth checking out.
do u know if theres any penalty abatement for this? or are we just stuck paying the full amount plus penalties? 😩
this post giving me anxiety cuz I just started unemployment last month and didnt check any tax withholding box 🙃 gonna log in right now and see if I can change that before it becomes a problem next year
Has anyone tried going to an actual unemployment office in person? I'm wondering if that might be faster than this phone/email nightmare.

Not to be that person, but there are TONS of jobs out there right now. I know it might not be what you want to do long term, but places are desperate for workers. My local target is offering $18/hr starting and signing bonuses. Just something to consider while you figure out the unemployment situation.

•I'm just trying to offer a practical solution. Not everyone can afford to wait for the perfect job when bills are due.

•I appreciate all perspectives. I've been applying to everything including retail but even those are competitive in my area. Still trying though!

•I've looked into it. Problem is I don't have a car right now. Been trying to find something I can do on foot or public transit.
