Why did I get a 1099-G if I didn't get unemployment benefits from NYS Department of Labor?

I'm really confused right now. I just got a 1099-G form in the mail from NYS Department of Labor saying I received unemployment benefits last year, but I never filed for unemployment at all. The form shows over $2,800 in benefits that I supposedly got. I checked my bank account and there's no deposits from NYS Department of Labor anywhere. I tried logging into my.ny.gov but I don't even have an account set up. Has this happened to anyone else? I'm worried someone might have filed a fraudulent claim using my information.

This sounds like identity theft unfortunately. Someone probably used your SSN to file a fraudulent unemployment claim. You need to report this to NYS Department of Labor immediately through their fraud reporting system. Also file a police report and contact the IRS about the incorrect 1099-G. Don't ignore this - it could affect your taxes.

Oh no, that's what I was afraid of. Do you know what number I should call to report this? The main NYS Department of Labor number just goes to a busy signal.

same thing happened to my neighbor last tax season. turned out someone filed a claim in her name and the benefits went to a different bank account. she had to jump through hoops to get it sorted out but NYS Department of Labor eventually cleared it up

How long did it take to resolve? I'm worried about filing my taxes with this incorrect 1099-G.

You'll want to file Form 14039 with the IRS for identity theft and also complete NYS Department of Labor's fraud affidavit. Keep copies of everything. For your taxes, you should NOT report the unemployment income since you didn't actually receive it. The 1099-G correction process can take several months, so document everything carefully.

I had trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor about a similar issue. Ended up using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me reach an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting nowhere.

THE SAME EXACT THING HAPPENED TO ME!!! Got a 1099-G for benefits I never received. Turns out my identity was stolen and someone filed a claim using my info. NYS Department of Labor's fraud department is IMPOSSIBLE to reach by phone. I've been trying for weeks to get this resolved and they keep telling me to submit forms online that don't work properly.

That's so frustrating! Did you ever get it sorted out? I'm dealing with something similar and getting nowhere with the online forms.

Check if maybe you had a short period of unemployment you forgot about? Sometimes people get confused about what year they received benefits or if they got other types of assistance that show up on 1099-G forms.

Update: I called the fraud hotline and they confirmed someone used my SSN to file a claim. The benefits were direct deposited to an account that's definitely not mine. They're opening an investigation and said I should get a corrected 1099-G in 6-8 weeks. Thanks everyone for the help - I was really panicking about this.
