NY unemployment sent me a 1099-G for $6,300 but I haven't received a penny in 19 weeks
I've been filing my weekly certifications religiously since August and haven't seen a single payment hit my account. Just got my 1099-G in the mail today saying they paid me $6,300 in benefits for last year! I double checked my bank statements and payment history - absolutely nothing has been deposited. I've called almost every day for the last two months but can never get through to a human. The online system shows my claim as "approved" but the payment history is completely empty. How can they report to the IRS that they paid me when I haven't gotten anything? Now I'm worried about tax implications on top of being broke. Has anyone dealt with this bizarre situation?

This happened to me last year! The 1099-G showed $8,750 but I only got about half of that amount. Turns out someone had accessed my account and changed my direct deposit info. Call them ASAP and report identity theft. They'll investigate and hopefully fix it, but it took them 3 months to resolve mine. You might also want to freeze your credit just to be safe.

OMG thank you for the heads up! Did they make you pay taxes on the full amount even tho you didnt get it all???

No, they issued a corrected 1099-G after the investigation. But I had to be super persistent and document EVERYTHING. Good luck!

After weeks of getting nowhere with NY unemployment, I finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual agent. They waited on hold so I didn't have to and when they got through, they called me. Explaining the 1099-G issue to a real person was way more effective than trying to resolve it through the portal. Within 2 days after speaking with someone, they found the problem and started the process to fix it. Best money I ever spent to get this nightmare resolved! Here's a video that helped me understand how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

100% worked for me. I was skeptical too but I was desperate after spending hours on hold every day for weeks. The agent I talked to immediately saw that my payments were being sent to a different account that wasn't mine.

I get the skepticism, I really do. But after 3 months of getting nowhere on my own, I had my issue fixed within days after talking to a real person. For me, it was worth every penny to get my 14k in back payments released.

I used it yesterday actually. Got a callback in about 1.5 hrs and explained my situation. Agent could see someone changed my direct deposit info to some random account. They're investigating now 👍

THIS IS FRAUD! SOMEONE STOLE YOUR IDENTITY AND IS COLLECTING YOUR BENEFITS!! Happened to me in 2021 and it took me 4 months to straighten out. Go to the unemployment office in person with ID and file a fraud report ASAP!!! Don't wait!!!!!

Definetly sounds like someone has stolen your info and rerouted your deposits. Check your account and see if the direct deposit info is correct. The DOL has been issuing 1099-Gs for benefits that were stolen through identity theft, which is super messed up b/c now you have to deal with the tax implications too😤

I just checked and the direct deposit info is totally different than mine!! It's some bank I never heard of. How did someone get into my account???

They probably got your info from one of the many data breaches over the past few years. Unemployment systems are a huge target for scammers. File a police report and contact NYSDOL fraud department immediately.

i LOATHE the ny unemployment system rn 🤮 sounds like classic fraud situation. The real problem is that its gonna mess up your taxes. Make sure you get a corrected 1099-G after filing fraud report or youll have to pay taxes on money you never got LOL 😭

Sorry ur dealing with this nonsense. Here's what you need to do: 1) Report identity theft to NYSDOL immediately - call their fraud line at 888-598-2077 (good luck getting through tho) 2) Change all your passwords for NYSDOL and your email accounts 3) Put a freeze on your credit with all three bureaus 4) File a police report - you'll need this for documentation 5) Contact the IRS Identity Protection Unit at 800-908-4490 6) Request a corrected 1099-G once the investigation is complete I've helped several people navigate this exact situation. The most effective way to get through to an actual person at NY unemployment is through claimyr.com - they'll wait on hold for you and connect you to an agent when they get through. Much faster than trying to call yourself. Don't delay on this - identity theft can spiral quickly if not addressed immediately. And don't pay taxes on benefits you never received!

The exact same thing happened to my wife! Turned out someone had changed her direct deposit info. It took forever to fix, but eventually she got a corrected 1099-G and they investigated the fraud. She ended up getting her actual benefits about 5 months later.

Not to be that guy, but have you tried just checking your payment history in your online account? Sometimes they send it to a debit card you never activated, or the direct deposit went to an old account.

Ella Knight
Yeah I checked payment history and there's literally nothing there - says no payments issued. I never got a debit card and the direct deposit info in my account is for some bank I don't recognize!

Oh snap, that's definitely fraud then. Someone changed your banking info. You need to report this ASAP!

NYC unemployment office worker here (not officially representing NYSDOL). This is 100% identity theft and unfortunately we're seeing a TON of these cases lately. You need to call our fraud department directly at 888-598-2077. Make sure you have your ID number, SSN, and a copy of the 1099-G ready. The department is extremely backlogged so be prepared to wait, but they will help you. I can't stress enough how important it is to report this ASAP.

Honestly, the fastest way is to physically go to a career center if possible. The phone lines are a disaster. If you can't do that, I've heard good things about claimyr.com for getting through on the phone (they wait on hold for you).

Is it true that there's a huge backlog of these identity theft cases? How long is the typical resolution time?

Yes, unfortunately we're backed up about 8-10 weeks for fraud investigations. The pandemic really opened the floodgates for scammers. We're working through them as fast as we can.

not trying to be rude but... where have u been? lol this is like a MASSIVE problem with NY unemployment for years now. happened to my brother, roommate, and cousin. scammers file in ur name, change the deposit info, and collect ur benefits. They target ppl who haven't filed yet but might be eligible.

Print out your 1099-G and bank statements showing you never received the money, then go IN PERSON to your local unemployment office. Calling rarely works. Bring multiple forms of ID. I had this happen and it was because someone had hacked my account and changed my direct deposit info. The local office helped me file a fraud report and eventually got it sorted.

I work in cybersecurity and this is a textbook example of unemployment fraud. The scammers are targeting unemployment systems nationwide. First thing - file an identity theft report with the FTC at identitytheft.gov. Then contact NY unemployment's fraud department. Also file a report with local police - you'll need the report number. Freeze your credit at all 3 bureaus IMMEDIATELY! This likely means your SSN has been compromised.

This is terrifying. Do I need to worry about them using my SSN for other things too? Should I get one of those identity protection services?

Unfortunately yes, you should be concerned. While not guaranteed, it's very possible they have enough info to open accounts in your name. A credit freeze is free and will prevent new accounts. Identity protection services can help monitor, but the free freeze is most important first step.

To add to this solid advice - also check your credit reports from all 3 bureaus for any accounts you don't recognize. You can get free weekly reports now at annualcreditreport.com

OK but can we talk about how BROKEN the ny unemployment system is that this keeps happening to so many people?? The security is clearly a joke if scammers can just change direct deposit info without verification. I've been reading about this happening since 2020 and they STILL haven't fixed it. 🤡🤡🤡

For real. It's ridiculous that this is still happening in 2023. The system needs a complete overhaul.

Theres a whole underground economy of scammers who specialize in unemployment fraud. They buy peoples personal info on the dark web, file claims, then route the $ to money mule accounts. Im a fraud investigator (not for NY) and these cases take MONTHS to resolve. Sorry ur going thru this.

Not exactly the same but my friend had a similar issue with her 1099-G showing more than she received. Turns out unemployment had been sending payments to her old closed bank account for 3 months. When she finally got through to someone, they reissued all her payments. Definitely call and escalate!!
