NY unemployment says my benefits ended after 26 weeks but I never got a single payment

Filed my unemployment claim about 7 weeks ago back in July. Got a call from someone at the department saying my claim was approved and I just needed to certify weekly. I've been doing that religiously every Sunday. Logged in yesterday and saw a message saying 'your benefits have ended' and that I've used all 26 weeks of benefits. But here's the crazy part - I've literally received ZERO dollars. Not a single payment. How can my benefits be over when I never got any money to begin with? I've called like 50 times and can't get through to anyone. Sent messages through the system but no response at all. Really stressing out because I was counting on this money for rent. Sent emails to my local representatives on 10/22 but still waiting to hear back. Anyone else deal with this kind of mess?

Giovanni Marino

The same exact thing happend to me last month! I filed in August, they said i was approved, and then got a message saying my benefits were exhausted. I was so confused cuz I didn't get a single penny either. NY unemployment system is completly broken.

Ugh sorry you're dealing with this too. Did you ever figure out how to fix it? I'm desperate at this point

Yea after 3 weeks of trying to get someone on the phone I finally got thru. They said it was a system error and had to manually override something. Still took another 2 weeks to get paid tho

How did you finally get through to them? I've been calling nonstop and just get the automated system

After weeks of trying to get through to ny unemployment I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com). They basically keep calling for you and then connect you when they actually get a human on the phone. Got connected in about 30 mins and the agent fixed my issue right away. Talking to an agent got my money unlocked so fast - wish I had found it sooner! Check out this video about how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

No catch, it actually works. I was skeptical too but I was desperate after trying for weeks. They just keep autodialing until they get someone, then connect you. Saved me hours of frustration.

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? the unemployment phone system is LITERALLY designed to drive us insane

It's the real deal. I had the same issue as OP and couldn't get through for weeks. Used Claimyr and got connected to an agent who fixed everything. My first payment hit my account 2 days later.

So I was about to throw my phone after 3 hours on hold when my cousin told me about this. Totally worked. System is so broken that we need hacks just to get our money 🤦‍♀️

This sounds like a system glitch to me. The computer thinks you were on unemployment BEFORE you filed your current claim. I've seen this happen to several people in this sub. You NEED to talk to an agent to fix it, there's no way around that unfortunately.

call right when they open. I mean EXACTLY when they open. Not 1 minute later or all the lines will be full. And keep calling everyday until you get through. It's ridiculous but its the only way without paying for one of those services.

I've tried that for the past 3 days. Called exactly at 8:00:00 AM and still got the "all our representatives are busy" message. So frustrating!

Damn that's rough. They must be slammed right now. Maybe try calling from a different phone number? Sometimes that works

You need to be SUPER LOUD on social media. Tag the governor, your representatives, the department of labor, local news stations. Make a big stink. That's the only thing that worked for me after 2 months of no benefits and no answers.

I'm not really big on social media but at this point I'll try anything. Did they actually respond to you when you did that?

Yes! I got a DM from my state rep's office asking for my info. They escalated it and I had my money within a week.

Look I've been dealing with ny unemployment for longer than I care to admit and honestly the whole system is trash. BUT there's a workaround for this specific issue. When you get that "benefits ended" message but never got paid, it's usually because the system has you flagged in 2 different statuses at once. You need to get through to a tier 2 agent (not just any agent) who has access to fix these conflicting statuses.

How do I make sure I get a tier 2 agent? Do I ask for one specifically?

Zainab Ali

Yes, when/if you get through, immediately say "I need a tier 2 agent for a claim with conflicting status codes" - using those exact words can help get you transferred faster

I work for a nonprofit that helps people with unemployment issues (not in NY tho). This is actually super common when there's identity verification issues. Did you ever get an email asking you to verify your identity through ID.me or something similar?

0 coins

-

Amara Okonkwo

No, never got anything like that. They just told me I was approved and to start certifying. Should I try to verify my identity anyway?

Yes, double check your spam folder for anything from ID.me. If nothing's there, you'll need to call and specifically ask if there's an identity verification hold on your account.

The EXACT same thing happened to my cousin last month! Turned out it was because his previous employer filed some paperwork challenging his claim even though he was eligible. Once he got an actual human on the phone they fixed it in 10 minutes and backpaid everything. Keep trying!

Ok here's what you need to do step by step to fix this issue with ny unemployment: 1) First, check your payment history in your online account - sometimes payments are processed but don't show up in the main dashboard 2) Look for any messages or letters in your online inbox about "monetary determination" - this is critical to understanding your situation 3) If there's nothing helpful there, you MUST speak with an agent. This is a system error that only they can fix manually. 4) Normal calling rarely works anymore with how overwhelmed the system is. I recommend using Claimyr.com - they keep dialing until they get through and then connect you. It's the best money I've ever spent to finally get my benefits paid quickly. 5) When you get an agent, use these exact words: "There's a status conflict on my account showing benefits exhausted but I've never received payment." 6) Request that they check for "phantom claims" in the system - sometimes the computer thinks you had a previous claim. 7) Ask them to verify all your banking info is correct in the system. 8) Get a reference number for your call and the agent's ID number. This system error happens way more often than they admit publicly. I've helped several friends through this exact situation. The key is getting to a live agent who can see what's happening behind the scenes.

THANK YOU for this detailed response. Going to try this approach today. I'll report back if it works!

Not falling for another unemployment 'hack'... these never work and Claimyr sounds like a scam

It's not a hack or a scam - it's just a service that helps you get through the phone lines. The actual fixing still comes from the DOL agent. But believe what you want 🤷‍♂️

FYI I used that Claimyr thing last week after being unable to get through for a month. Got connected to a rep in like 45 mins who fixed my issue. Worth every penny with the amount of stress it saved me.

Contact your state assembly person!!!!! This is literally what they exist for. Google "[your county] NY state assembly" and email/call their office. They have special contacts at unemployment and can escalate your case.

Amara Okonkwo

I emailed my state senator about 2 weeks ago but haven't heard anything back yet. Should I try the assembly person too?

0 coins

-

Amina Diop

YES! Assembly people are usually more responsive than senators for some reason. And try calling their office directly instead of email.

my benefits said the same thing. turns out I had an old claim from 2021 that was still in the system and somehow it thought I was on that claim. total mess. you gotta call and explain the situation to an agent who can actually see whats going on

Anyone else think its insane that we have to jump through all these hoops just to get money we're legally entitled to? 😤 The system is DESIGNED to be frustrating so people give up. Don't give up OP!

THIS!!! 💯 They make it as difficult as possible hoping we'll just go away

My theory is that they do this on purpose to save money. If their system "accidentally" denies 30% of legitimate claims and only half those people have the time/resources to fight it... they save millions

exactlyyyy... its all by design. And they know most ppl living paycheck to paycheck don't have time to spend 5 hours on hold everyday for weeks

this happened to my roomate. ended up being that someone stole his identity and filed a claim before him. took forever to sort out but he got all his backpay eventually.

i hate to be that person but did u check ur spam folder? sometimes the payment notifications go there and the actual deposits might be on a debit card they mailed you (if u didnt set up direct deposit

0 coins

-

Amara Okonkwo

Yeah I've checked spam obsessively and I definitely set up direct deposit. My bank info is all correct in the system too. Good thought though!
