Filed NY unemployment claim showing $0.00 benefit amount despite working 6 months

Submitted my unemployment claim about 2 weeks ago after being let go from my job where I worked for about 7 months. Been certifying every week since then but when I got the monetary determination letter in the mail yesterday, it showed a benefit amount of $0.00? How is that possible? I definitely earned enough at my previous position to qualify. Been trying to call ny unemployment every single day since 8am but keep getting the 'all lines are busy, please call back later' message. So frustrating! Has anyone else dealt with this $0 benefit issue and actually managed to get through to a real person? I'm starting to worry about paying my bills.

Same thing happened to me. The $0.00 usually means they couldn't verify your wages with your employer. You probably need to submit wage documents or your employer didn't report your wages correctly. And yeah good luck getting through on the phone, I spent 3 weeks trying before I found a solution.

What solution did you find? I'm desperate at this point 😫

I ended up using a service called claimyr.com - it calls for you and connects you when there's a real person. Only way I actually got through after trying for weeks. Fixed my issue in one call.

Worked for me! My $0 benefit got fixed to $357 once I got through to someone. Here's a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

After struggling for WEEKS to reach ny unemployment by phone, I finally discovered claimyr.com which called for me and connected me with an agent. Talking to an actual person got my claim fixed in minutes after I explained my wage verification issue. Best decision I made - my benefits started coming the following week. No more endless busy signals! There's also a helpful video about it: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Sounds like an advertisement... does this actually work or what?

I was skeptical too, but yeah it actually works. I was ready to give up after calling for 3 weeks straight. Talking to a real person made all the difference - they fixed my wage issue right away.

They don't ask for ANY of your info! They just call the unemployment line and connect you when a person answers. You talk directly to unemployment yourself.

I tried other 'solutions' before and wasted so much time... this one actually got me through to a real agent tho. My $0 award letter was due to my employer contesting my claim.

That $0.00 determination is the WORST. In my case it happened because my employer reported my wages to a different state (I work remotely). I needed to provide my W2 and paystubs to prove my income. Took me literal MONTHS to get it fixed because I couldn't get through on the phone. The system is completely broken.

Months?? I can't wait that long. Did you ever get it fixed?

Yes, eventually. But only after I figured out you have to call exactly at 7:59am, then wait on hold for 3+ hours. Once I got a human, they fixed it in like 10 minutes. So stupid that getting a person on the line is virtually impossible.

pro tip: try calling their tier 2 number at obscure times like Tuesday at 3:15pm. Sometimes works better than mornings.

The $0.00 determination letter usually happens for a few reasons: 1. Your employer didn't report your wages properly 2. You worked in multiple states 3. Your base period might not include enough of your work history 4. There's an issue with your identity verification You MUST talk to a rep to fix this - but calling is nearly impossible. After my 20th attempt I used claimyr.com which got me through to an agent in about 30 mins. Best money I ever spent because they fixed my issue immediately - turns out my employer had contested my claim which froze everything. Without talking to someone I would have been stuck for weeks. Also, while waiting, gather ALL your proof of employment: paystubs, W2s, offer letter, any emails about your termination. You'll need these to verify your wages. Don't give up! A $0 determination can absolutely be fixed.

I had the EXACT same problem last month. $0.00 award after working for 9 months at my last job. Turns out my employer hadn't filed their quarterly wage reports on time 🤦‍♀️ You need to send in proof of your wages - I uploaded my paystubs through the document portal on the website. Still took forever but eventually got fixed.

Where is this document portal? I can't find it on the website

Login to your account > go to messages > then there's an option to upload documents. But honestly, even after I uploaded everything, nothing happened until I actually spoke to someone.

THIS HAPPENED TO ME TOO! My $0 determination was because they had my social security number wrong by one digit. One freaking digit! Took me SIX CALLBACKS to finally get someone competent enough to fix it. The ny unemployment phone system is literally designed to make you give up.

how did you even get callbacks? i've requested like 5 and nobody ever calls me back 🤬

I never got the official callbacks either. I used claimyr.com to get through after my buddy recommended it. Otherwise I'd probably still be waiting.

you might be looking at the wrong thing. there's a monetary determination letter AND a benefit rate calculation. make sure you're looking at the right document in your account. but yah, if it does say $0, you definitely need to call.

It happened cuz thy dont have all ur wage record. Samethign happened to me. I got fired in Nov after working since February but only my first quarter wages were showing up. Had to fax my paystubs MULTIPLE TIMES (keep copies of fax confirmation sheets!!!). Called 63 TIMES before I got thru. The rep updated it while I was on the phone and my payment hit 3 days later.

63 times?!? That's insane! What number did you call that actually worked?

The main number BUT I called exactly at 8:01am. Not 8:00, not 8:02. Exactly 8:01. And then I had to wait on hold for 96 minutes.

I've been trying for a week with no luck. Might try that service someone mentioned above, claimyr.com - getting desperate enough to try anything 😩

This is super common right now. The system is overwhelmed and making tons of mistakes. Check your wage history - bet it shows nothing or wrong amounts.

Weirdly enough try calling your state representatives office! My cousin works for a state senator and they can sometimes expedite these issues. Worth a shot if you're desperate.

-

Amina Toure

Never thought of that. Do I just look up my local rep and call their office?

Luca Ferrari

Yep! Just look up your state assembly person or senator and explain your situation. They have special contacts at unemployment.

Been dealing with ny unemployment for 7 months now. It's a disaster. $0 determination was just the beginning of my nightmare. get ready for a wild ride. My advice: document EVERYTHING. Record calls if legal in your state. This system is designed to make you give up.

send a message through the contact portal on the website! I know it seems useless but I actually got a call back 3 days after submitting a message about my $0 benefit letter. Make sure you specifically say 'monetary determination error' in the subject line.

A lot of ppl saying to call but tbh I never got through. What worked for me was going IN PERSON to the workforce office. Idk if they have them where u live but it was the only way I got my $0 thing fixed. Bring ALL ur documents tho - paystubs, ID, everything

Most of those offices are still closed from covid though?

Some reopened! Check online, worth looking into.

Stop calling and try Twitter! Seriously, tweet at @NYSLabor with your issue (no personal info) and they often DM you for details. Worked for me when I had a $0 determination last year. Social media is surprisingly effective.

Did you make sure ur base period has enough wages? If you only worked 6 months, depending on WHICH 6 months, you might not qualify under the standard base period. Look up 'alternate base period' for NY unemployment.

I'm going through the EXACT same thing right now. I got through on the phone yesterday using claimyr.com (it calls for you and connects you to an agent). The agent told me my employer disputed my claim saying I was fired for misconduct which AUTOMATICALLY gives a $0 determination until it's resolved. You might want to check if that's your situation too.
