Confused about NY unemployment - benefits exhausted message but still money left?

I got laid off last October and have been collecting unemployment since then. My Benefit Year End date is May 17, 2022, and I still have around $4500 left in my Maximum Amount Payable according to my account. I've been filing claims every week like normal and getting paid without any issues until this week. When I submitted my weekly certification yesterday, I suddenly got a message saying "You have exhausted all unemployment benefits on your claim" which makes absolutely no sense to me since I can clearly see there's still money in my account. I'm freaking out because I still need this money to pay rent next month. Has anyone else dealt with this? Do I need to file a new claim even though my BYE hasn't passed yet? I'm worried they'll say I was collecting when I shouldn't have been and make me pay everything back. I've tried calling about 20 times today but can't get through to a human. Should I just keep certifying weekly even with that message showing up? This system is so confusing.

The same exact thing happened to me last week. You likely ran out of your regular UI benefits and need to get on the extension. The message is super misleading because you're right - your benefit year isn't over yet. Call them ASAP to make sure the extension gets applied correctly. It took me 3 days of calling non-stop to finally reach someone.

How many times did you have to call to get through? I've been trying for hours and keep getting disconnected 😩

Like 50+ times no joke. I finally used claimyr.com and got a callback within an hour. Talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast, totally worth it.

Is that service for real? Sounds too good to be true tbh

100% worked for me, they just stay on hold for you and call when there's a live agent. Check out this video about how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

I was skeptical too but it saved me days of frustration. The agent fixed my issue in 5 minutes once I actually got through.

I tried this service claimyr.com after fighting with the phone system for 2 weeks straight. It was the only way I could talk to a live agent, and they sorted my claim out immediately. It was the best money I've ever spent to finally get my benefits paid quickly. Check them out: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

No catch - they just automate the calling and hold process. You still talk directly to unemployment yourself when they get someone on the line.

hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different?

It literally just handles the phone dialing and waiting on hold part. When a human answers, they connect you. That's it. I was shocked it worked too lol

So I was about to throw my phone after 3 hours on hold when my friend told me about this. Got through same day. The UI system is such a nightmare rn.

So here's whats actually happening. When you exhaust your regular UI benefits, there's a gap before the extension kicks in automatically. You shouldn't have to do anything except keep certifying weekly, but sometimes their system glitches and you need to call. Since your BYE hasn't passed yet, you definitely qualify for continued benefits through the extension programs. Don't panic!

This EXACT same thing happened to me. Keep certifying every week even with the message. Mine fixed itself after 2 weeks and I got backpay for the missed weeks. but some people have to call to get it fixed manually. The system is garbage 🗑️

Did you have to do anything special or it just started working again on its own?

It started working again on its own for me, but my friend had to call in. Seems totally random who has to call and who doesn't 🤷‍♀️

Look for a letter in the mail. That message usually means you're switching from regular UI to PEUC (the extension). They should send you something explaining it, but their mail system is sloooow. If you don't get anything within a week, you definitely need to call.

This ⬆️ happened to me too. Letter came like 10 days later but benefits never stopped.

The Maximum Amount Payable display on your account doesn't automatically update when you switch to an extension program. That's why it shows money left even though your regular UI is exhausted. It's confusing af and poor design tbh.

Here's what you need to know about NY unemployment and this situation: When you see that "exhausted benefits" message but still have Maximum Amount Payable showing, it typically means you've used up your regular UI benefits (26 weeks worth) but are eligible for extension programs. The important things to do: 1. KEEP CERTIFYING WEEKLY no matter what. If there's a gap in payments, you'll eventually get backpay once the extension kicks in. 2. Check your payment history regularly to see if anything gets processed. 3. Try to reach an agent to verify your status. The phone lines are impossible, but using claimyr.com is the most efficient way to get a callback when an agent is available. 4. Don't file a new claim unless specifically instructed to do so - filing a new claim incorrectly can create bigger problems. 5. Check your message inbox and mail daily for any communications about your next steps. The extension should kick in automatically, but the system has been glitchy since the pandemic started. Most people in your situation get it resolved within 1-3 weeks, but speaking with an agent can fix it immediately rather than waiting. Hope this helps and good luck!

Nah this one's legit, they just keep autodialing for you. Anyone who's dealt with ny unemployment knows that's the actual hardest part

What number did you call? The main one just hangs up on me every time saying "due to high call volume" blah blah blah 😡

Try early in the morning right when they open. Like 7:59am and keep calling.

I got through at like 7:30am once, but most times the robot just hangs up on me

check ur payment history and see what it says for "type" on the last payment. if it says UI, then u used up regular benefits. If it says PEUC, then something else is wrong

0 coins

-

Dmitry Petrov

sounds like u need to switch over to PEUC

They're supposed to do that automatically but with NY unemployment nothing is actually automatic 🙄
