Hit my max benefit amount on ny unemployment before BYE date - what now?
So I reached my maximum benefit amount a couple weeks ago, but my benefit year end date isn't until November. I'm still unemployed and looking for work every day but no luck so far. My last payment came through on April 18th and nothing since then. The online system just shows my claim as 'exhausted.' Do I need to file a new claim now or wait until my BYE date? I'm really stressing because I've got rent due next week and was counting on at least a few more months of benefits. Has anyone else dealt with this situation? What happens when you run out of money but your benefit year isn't over yet?

Yeah unfortunately when you hit your maximum benefit amount thats it for this claim. The BYE date is just the latest you can collect, but if you run out before then, your done. You cant refile until after your BYE date in November. The maximum benefit amount is calculated based on your work history and once its gone its gone. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but thats just how it works. Check if you qualify for SNAP or other assistance in the meantime.

•OP you might also check with 211 - they can connect you with emergency rent assistance or other local help programs.

•This is why the system is so messed up. They calculate your max benefit but don't explain that it might run out before your BYE date. Nobody tells you this stuff until its too late! 🤮

I was in the exact same boat in February! Ran out of benefits with 4 months left on my BYE date. I couldn't get a straight answer online so I needed to talk to an actual person. I used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they got me through to a real agent in about 40 minutes. The agent confirmed that once your benefits are exhausted, that's it until your BYE date passes. But talking to an agent was super helpful because they told me about some other programs I qualified for. Best money I ever spent to get actual answers instead of stressing for days. Here's a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•is this some kind of scam? ive never heard of this claimyr thing...

•Not a scam at all. It's just a service that calls the unemployment office for you and stays on hold, then calls you when they get a human. Saved me like 4 hours of hold time. They don't ask for any personal info either - they just connect the call to your phone.

•what other programs did they tell you about? im about to hit my max too 😩

•Depends on your situation but they told me about the 599 training program (if you qualify for approved training you can get benefits extended) and some local emergency assistance programs. Worth asking when you call!

•hmm another 'miracle solution'... not falling for that again

•I was skeptical too but actually used it last month when my claim had issues. It works - they just dial for you and connect when someone answers. Saved my sanity after trying to call for 3 days straight.

•huh, I stand corrected. might check it out then since I've been trying to reach someone for weeks

this is why the ny unemployment system is such garbage. like they dont even make it clear that you might exhaust ur benefits before the bye date. i found out the hard way too. ur basically stuck until ur bye date passes then u can file a new claim. its ridiculous that they cant just extend people who still cant find work!!!

Unfortunately, once your funds are exhaused there's no way to get more until your BYE date passes and you refile. But before you panic, double check your payment history on the website to make sure you actually hit your maximum. Sometimes the system has glitches and shows exhausted when you actually still have some left. You need to call them to verify. I know it's almost impossible to get through on the phone, but that's really the only way to confirm your status and see if there are any alternative programs you might qualify for.

•I checked the payment history and it shows I got exactly what they said my max would be ($11,440 total). But I'll try calling to see if there are other options. Thanks for the suggestion.

Same thing happened to me last year! The benefit year end date is just the maximum time period, but once your benefits are gone, they're gone until you can file a new claim. You have to have worked and earned enough in the period before filing a new claim. If you haven't worked since your last claim, you might not qualify for a new claim even after your BYE date. The whole system is designed to be confusing I swear.

•Wait so even after my BYE date I might not qualify??? Oh god that's terrifying. I've had a couple small gigs but nothing substantial 😫

•Yeah you need to have earned enough in your base period to qualify again. Small gigs might help but it depends on how much you made. Definitely call and ask about your specific situation.

You should check out if you qualify for the 599 Training program. If you enroll in approved training/education, you can sometimes get an extension on your benefits. It's not automatic though - you have to apply and get approved. When I exhausted my benefits early, I enrolled in a tech certification program and got approved for additional benefits. It's worth looking into if you're interested in training for a new career anyway.

•I had no idea this existed! Going to look into this right away. Do you know where I can find more info about approved programs?

•Check out the NYSDOL website under '599 Training' or call and ask specifically about it. Community colleges often have approved programs too!

you might qualfy for SNAP benefits (food stamps) in the meantime. doesnt help with rent but at least it's something. also check with local charities and churches. when i ran out of benefits last summer i got rent help from a local church program. its worth asking around!

I've been dealing with the NY unemployment system for what feels like forever and I've learned a LOT about how to navigate it. Here's what you need to know: First, yes - once you hit your maximum benefit amount, that's it for this claim period regardless of your BYE date. The maximum benefit amount is calculated based on what you earned during your base period, and it's a set amount that won't change. You have several options now: 1. Wait until after your BYE date to file a new claim, BUT you'll need to have worked and earned enough during your new base period to qualify. 2. Look into the 599 Training program if you're interested in education/training. 3. Apply for other assistance like SNAP, rental assistance programs, etc. 4. If you think there was an error in your benefit calculation, you should definitely call. The online system is notoriously buggy. The most important thing is to talk to an actual agent who can review your specific case. After trying for weeks to get through on the phone, I found claimyr.com which got me connected to an agent within an hour. They stayed on hold and called me when they got someone. The agent I spoke with found an issue with my claim that was fixable! Don't give up - the system is frustrating but there are resources out there to help.

If u have any W2 income during ur current benefit year that wasnt used for ur current claim u might be able to file a new claim with that income. Worth asking about.

When I ran out early I literally called like 200 times before getting through. When I finally talked to someone they told me I actually qualified for a different type of claim that had additional benefits. Not saying this will be your situation but ALWAYS talk to a human. The website never gives you the full picture.

•200 times?! That's insane. Did you just keep redialing over and over?

•Yep, for like 3 days straight. Pure torture. There are services that can do the calling for you now though like someone mentioned above.

I know this isnt what anyone wants to hear but it might be time to consider taking ANY job for now, even if its not in your field or pays less than you want. You can keep looking for something better while having some income. When i exhausted my benefits I ended up taking a retail job that I hated, but it paid the bills until I found something in my field 3 months later.

•Yeah you're right. I've been holding out for something in my field but I'm applying for literally anything now.

just a heads up you might start getting offers for "unemployment extensions" or "additional benefits" in your email or texts. THESE ARE SCAMS!!! don't click on any links or give any info. ny unemployment will never email you about extensions - everything comes through your online account or mail.

•THIS!!! I got scammed out of $200 thinking it was a legit extension service. Report any suspicious emails.

idk if this helps but i had a similar issue and called my state assembly person's office. they have staff who deal with unemployment issues and can sometimes get things moving. worth a try at least.

Not to be that person, but there are TONS of jobs out there right now. I know it might not be what you want to do long term, but places are desperate for workers. My local target is offering $18/hr starting and signing bonuses. Just something to consider while you figure out the unemployment situation.

•This is such a useless comment. You have no idea what field OP is in or what their situation is. Not everyone can just work retail.

•I'm just trying to offer a practical solution. Not everyone can afford to wait for the perfect job when bills are due.
