My NY unemployment appeal forms returned to sender after waiting a month - what now?

I was denied unemployment benefits in September and I'm pretty sure it was just because I made some errors on my application. I filled out all the appeal paperwork they required and mailed everything in before the deadline, almost 6 weeks ago. Then YESTERDAY, all my documents showed up back in my mailbox marked 'return to sender'! I don't understand what went wrong. I used the address printed right on their forms. To make things worse, about 4 weeks ago someone from unemployment called asking for some clarification on my case. They promised I'd hear back within 10 business days but of course that never happened. I tried calling them on Monday and waited on hold for over two hours. When someone finally picked up, they transferred me to some automated system that started walking me through filing a completely new claim. I wasn't ready to do that since I didn't have all my employment info with me. Then the call dropped anyway and I haven't been able to get through again. Trying again today but just getting busy signals or disconnects. I'm completely lost on what to do next. Any advice would be really appreciated!

wow they seriously returned all ur documents after a MONTH?? that is classic NY unemployment incompetence right there. I've had nothing but problems with them since i got laid off. im convinced nobody actually works there, its just a building full of shredders and a fax machine from 1992 🤣🤡

Yeah I'm so frustrated! I was counting on having this resolved by now. I quadruple checked the address before I sent it too.

It's literally impossible to get anyone on the phone who knows what they're talking about. I think they train them to be useless on purpose 💅

hahaha truth!! the whole system is designed to make u give up. dont let them win tho!

After THREE rejected applications and zero help, I finally tried this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and it actually got me connected to a real person at unemployment. Talking to a live agent got my benefits approved in just one call after months of nothing. It's basically a service that waits on hold for you then calls your phone when they get someone on the line. Honestly it was the best move I made to finally get my money flowing again. Check out this video about how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

this sounds like some kind of scam... does it actually work? I've tried everything else 🤔

0 coins

I was super skeptical too but it actually works. They just call the unemployment line for you and then connect you when a person answers. Saved me from waiting on hold for 4+ hours

0 coins

hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different?

0 coins

It's literally just a service that waits on hold so you don't have to. Then when they get a human, they call your phone and connect you. After spending two weeks trying to get through myself, it was worth it to finally talk to someone who fixed my claim in 10 minutes.

another day, another company promising to fix the unfixable unemployment system lol

I actually used this last month when my payments suddenly stopped. Got through to an agent who fixed everything in one call. Just saying it worked for me 🤷‍♂️

Double check the address you sent it to. There are like 3 different addresses for unemployment stuff in NY and they're super specific about which forms go where. I made that mistake and had to restart the whole process. So frustrating.

Try faxing your documents instead of mailing them! I had the same issue last year and switched to faxing everything. At least that way you get a confirmation it was received. There's apps that let you fax from your phone if you don't have a fax machine.

That's a good idea! Do you know if I need to include anything special with the fax to make sure it gets to the right department?

Put your claim ID number on EVERY page and also include a cover sheet with your name, phone, claim ID, and exactly what forms you're sending. And keep the fax confirmation forever!

So here's what you need to do to resolve this situation: First, don't panic about the returned mail. This happens all the time with NY unemployment and it usually means one of three things: 1. The address format wasn't exactly right (they're super picky) 2. You needed to include your claim ID number on the envelope 3. They moved offices and didn't update their forms (happened last year) Your best bet is to resend everything with tracking AND try multiple contact methods simultaneously: - Resend your appeal forms via certified mail with tracking - Upload the same documents through your online account if that option is available - Try calling right when they open (7:30am) as that's when hold times are shortest - Consider using claimyr.com if you can't get through - it's a service that waits on hold for you then calls when they get a human on the line I went through almost the exact same situation in July and eventually got everything sorted, but only after I managed to actually speak with someone. The key is persistence and documentation - keep records of EVERYTHING including when you called, who you spoke with, and what they said. The system is frustrating by design, but don't give up! Getting a real person on the phone is honestly the fastest way to resolution.

Thank you so much for this detailed response! I'll try calling at 7:30am tomorrow and resend everything certified mail. Have you personally used that claimyr service?

0 coins

Yes, I used it after trying for two weeks straight to get through. The regular phone line is basically impossible during normal hours. Claimyr got me through to someone who actually fixed my issue in one call.

0 coins

the EXACT same thing happend to me! turns out they moved offices but didn't update the address on there website. Look on ur denial letter and see if it has a different address for appeals then whats on the form. so dumb.

0 coins

I'll check that! Was there anything special you had to do when you resent your forms?

0 coins

i put APPEAL REQUEST and my claim # in big letters on the front of the envelope and sent it certified mail so i could track it

Contact your state representative! I was stuck in unemployment hell for 3 months until I reached out to my assemblyman's office. They have special contacts at NYSDOL and got my issue fixed in a week. Seriously, this is the secret weapon nobody tells you about.

THIS!!!!! 👆👆👆 My state senator's office literally saved me thousands of dollars. They have a direct line to unemployment that regular people can't access.

0 coins

I hadn't even thought of that! Do I just call their office and explain my situation?

0 coins

Exactly! Just call your state assembly member or senator's office (whoever represents your district) and tell them you need help with unemployment. They'll have you fill out a form authorizing them to inquire about your case, then they contact DOL directly. Works like magic.

go to the local unemployment office in person!!!!! thats the only way I got my issue fixed. they cant ignore you when youre standing right in front of them lol

0 coins

Do they even have real offices anymore? I thought everything was just call centers now? Where did you go?

0 coins

there's career centers that have unemployment staff. google "ny career center near me" and call first to check if they handle unemployment issues in person. some do some dont.

OMG the unemployment system is such a joke. I bet they're hoping you'll just give up. Don't! That's what they want. Keep calling, keep trying different numbers. I found that if you select the option for "filing a new claim" instead of "existing claim questions" you sometimes get through to a human faster who can then transfer you to the right department.

Check if the address you used matches the regional office that handles your zipcode. NY has different unemployment offices for different regions and they WILL return your mail if it goes to the wrong one. It's on their website somewhere buried deep in the FAQ.

0 coins

Thanks! I'll look for that information. Their website is so confusing.

0 coins

Not sure if this is still the case, but last year they were requiring a specific color ink (BLACK ONLY) for all forms and would reject anything in blue ink. Could that be the issue?

0 coins

I swear the unemployment system is deliberately broken to prevent people from getting benefits. They make everything so complicated that people just give up. Don't give up!

0 coins

Facts 💯 It's literally designed to be frustrating. They save money when people abandon their claims.

0 coins

yep yep. my uncle works for the state (not unemployment) and he says they're chronically understaffed by design. less staff = fewer approved claims = more $ for the state

0 coins

If your documents came back "return to sender" check if you put the right ZIP+4 code. My friend had the same issue and it was because she only used the 5-digit zip instead of the full 9-digit one. Apparently the post office is being super strict about this with government mail now.

Try the unemployment backdoor number: [redacted for privacy]. It's supposed to be for employers only but sometimes works for claimants too. I got through after just 20 minutes on hold using this number last month.

0 coins

This number doesn't work anymore, they caught on and now there's just a recording telling regular claimants to call the main number 😭

0 coins

Dangit! They always catch on eventually. The system is rigged I swear.

0 coins

I kno this sounds crazy but try calling exactly at 4:57pm. For some reason thats when I always get through. The hold music will play for like 30-45 mins but you'll eventually get a person. Worked for me 3 times.

Email them through the contact form on the website AND send a message through your online account messaging system. Sometimes they respond faster to written communications than phone calls. Make your message short, specific and include all your identifying info (claim ID, last 4 of SSN, etc).

0 coins

I'll try that right now! Should I attach copies of my appeal documents too?

0 coins

Yes! Attach everything but make sure the files aren't too large or it might reject the submission.
