How long for NY unemployment to process payment? Been waiting over a week!

Applied for NY unemployment benefits last week and still nothing in my account. Does anyone know how long it typically takes for them to process the first payment? My claim status says 'approved' but no money yet. Getting kinda worried since rent is coming up soon. Is there a specific timeframe or should I be calling someone? Thanks!

It usually takes 2-3 weeks for your first payment to process after your claim is approved. The system is super backed up in 2025 because of all the tech updates they're doing. As long as your status says 'approved' you should be okay - just keep doing your weekly certifications!

Thanks! That's a relief to hear. Is there any way to check if there's an issue with my payment specifically? Or do I just wait the full 3 weeks?

NYSDOL is TERRIBLE with processing times!! I had to wait 4 weeks for my first payment even though everything was approved right away. They claim it's 2-3 weeks but that's LIES. The system is broken and nobody answers the phones!!!

It's not lies - the official processing time IS 2-3 weeks for most claims. But you're right that some claims take longer if there are verification issues or your previous employer disputes anything. The system isn't broken, it's just overwhelmed with the recent manufacturing layoffs.

Wait are you talking about the first payment after approval or the very first payment after applying? Because those are different things. If your claim was JUST approved, the first payment usually comes 1-2 weeks after that. But from initial application to first payment can be 4-6 weeks total depending on verification needs.

My claim status on the website says 'approved' as of 5 days ago, but I originally applied about 2 weeks ago. So I guess I'm waiting for the first payment after approval? The whole process is confusing.

Then you should see a payment within the next week most likely! Just make sure you've done all your weekly certifications correctly. That's usually what holds things up.

I had the same problem last month and couldn't get through on the phones for DAYS. Finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an agent in like 30 minutes instead of waiting on hold forever. The agent told me my payment was delayed because I answered one of the certification questions wrong. They fixed it right on the call and I got paid 2 days later. Check out their demo video if you want to see how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Oh wow, thanks for the tip! I'll try calling the regular number tomorrow, but if I can't get through I might check out that service. Did they help you figure out which question you answered wrong?

Yeah, turns out I had checked 'yes' for refusing work when I meant to check 'no'. Such a stupid mistake but it completely held up my claim. The agent was able to correct it while I was on the phone. Before using Claimyr I spent 3 days trying to get through the regular way and kept getting disconnected.

Make sure you're checking your email AND the Message Center in your NY.gov account! Sometimes they need additional documents but don't call you - they just send a message through the system. I missed one of those messages and it delayed my payments by 3 weeks.

I didn't even know there was a Message Center! Let me go check that right now. Thanks for the heads up!

Here's the official timeline for NY unemployment in 2025: 1. Application submission 2. 1-2 weeks for initial review and employer verification 3. Claim approval/denial 4. First payment 3-7 business days AFTER approval 5. Subsequent payments within 2-3 days of weekly certification If your claim shows 'approved' and it's been more than 7 business days since approval, you should definitely call. The $1,020 waiting week was eliminated in 2023, so your first payment should include all eligible weeks.

That timeline is COMPLETE BS!! I was approved in January and waited 14 business days for my first payment! And I know at least 6 other people with the same experience. NYSDOL just makes up these timelines and never follows them!!!

I understand your frustration, but those extended delays usually happen when there's an issue with your claim that needs manual review. The timeline I shared is accurate for claims with no issues. About 75% of claims follow this timeline according to NYSDOL's 2024 annual report.

Update: I checked the Message Center like someone suggested and found a request for additional employment verification that was sent 4 days ago! No email notification or anything. Uploaded the documents they needed right away. Hopefully this speeds things up! Thank you all for the help!

Glad you found it! The exact same thing happened to me. Once you upload those documents, it usually takes 2-3 business days for them to process and then payment should come shortly after. Make sure to keep doing your weekly certifications in the meantime!

Will do, thanks! I'll come back and update once I get paid in case it helps someone else with the same question.

My sister waited 2 weeks after approval for her first payment, but that was because her last employer contested her claim. Once that was resolved the money came within 2 days. Did you leave your last job voluntarily? That can cause delays too.

I was laid off due to downsizing, so it wasn't voluntary. But I found the issue in my Message Center - they needed additional pay stubs that I didn't know they were asking for. Just submitted them!
