How long to hear from NYS Department of Labor unemployment after filing?
Filed my unemployment claim with NYS Department of Labor 2 weeks ago and haven't heard anything back yet. My account just shows 'claim processing' and I'm starting to get really worried. I've been checking my.ny.gov every day but there's no updates. How long does it usually take to hear something back from them? I'm behind on rent and really need to know if my claim was approved or if there's problems I need to fix.

It can take anywhere from 1-4 weeks depending on your situation. If you had any issues with previous employers or gaps in employment, they might need to do adjudication which takes longer. Keep filing your weekly claims even while waiting - that's important.

•I did have a gap between jobs but I thought I explained that in my application. Should I be doing something else while I wait?

took me 3 weeks last time and that was without any complications... the system is just slow right now

The typical timeframe is 2-3 weeks for a straightforward claim, but if there are any red flags in your work history or reason for separation, it can trigger adjudication which adds several more weeks. Make sure you're continuing to file your weekly certifications and keep documentation of your job search activities. If you haven't received any correspondence by week 4, that's when I'd start making calls to NYS Department of Labor.

•Good luck getting through on the phone though! I've been trying for days and either get busy signals or get disconnected after waiting on hold for hours. There's actually a service called Claimyr that helps you get through to NYS Department of Labor agents - check out claimyr.com and they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Saved me so much frustration when I needed to check on my adjudication status.

•That sounds too good to be true but at this point I'm desperate. How much does something like that cost?

•It's worth it when you consider how much time you save not sitting on hold all day. They basically call for you and get you connected to an actual person who can look up your claim.

The whole system is a JOKE. They make you jump through hoops and then take forever to process anything. I waited 5 weeks just to get told I needed to provide more documentation that they never even asked for initially. Meanwhile bills are piling up and they act like it's no big deal.

•I feel you on this. The stress of not knowing is almost worse than being denied.

Keep checking your my.ny.gov account daily and make sure your contact info is updated. Sometimes they send important notices that you might miss. Also double check that you're filing your weekly claims correctly - if you miss even one week it can mess up your whole claim timeline.
