When will I get my first ny unemployment payment after waiting week?

I filed my unemployment claim after getting laid off from my tech job in early August. I've been certifying every week since. On my account portal, it shows that September 12th was marked as my waiting week. It's been over 10 days now, and I haven't seen any payments hit my account yet. The system shows my claim is approved and everything looks good on my end. When should I expect to get my first payment? Is there usually a delay after the waiting week? The bills are starting to pile up and I'm getting worried... Anyone know the typical timeline for NY unemployment payments after the waiting week is completed?

generally you should see payment within 3 business days after certifying for the week AFTER your waiting week. So if Sept 12 was your waiting week, you certify the next week, then wait 3 business days. Did you check your payment history in your account? Sometimes it'll show pending payments there before they actually hit your bank account.

Thanks for the info! I checked my payment history and there's nothing there yet, not even pending. I certified this past Sunday for the week after my waiting week. So maybe by tomorrow I should see something?

Yeah give it til tomorrow or Thursday. The system is always slower than they claim. If nothing by Friday definitely try calling them.

Will do. I'm just getting nervous because rent is coming up soon.

After struggling for weeks to get through to a real person at unemployment (kept getting hung up on after hours on hold), I finally found a service called Claimyr that got me connected with an actual agent. They called NY unemployment for me, waited on hold, then connected me directly when an agent answered. It was the only way I could talk to a live agent who fixed my payment issues on the spot. Check them out: claimyr.com - talking to an agent got my money released within days! They even have a YouTube video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

is this some kind of scam? 🤔 there's no way to get through to unemployment... i've been trying for WEEKS

0 coins

Not a scam at all - they literally just do the waiting on hold part for you. I was skeptical too but I was desperate after trying for 2 weeks straight. They called, waited on hold for like 2 hours, then my phone rang when they got someone. Totally worth it cause the agent fixed my issue immediately.

wait does this actually work? i might try anything at this point... been certifying for 3 weeks with no payment

100% worked for me. My claim had some flag on it that was stopping payment - wouldn't have known without talking to someone. After the call my back payments came through in 2 days.

Do NOT expect anything to be on time with NY unemployment 🙄 My waiting week was processed but it took almost 3 weeks for my first payment to show up. The system is completely broken. I had to call them every single day for hours before I finally got through.

Make sure you certified correctly. When I first started, I thought I was doing it right but actually messed up the questions (the one about being ready and available to work). Had to call and get it fixed. Their website is the WORST.

0 coins

I think I certified correctly. I answered Yes to being ready to work and No to refusing any work or earning any money that week. Is there anything else I should watch out for?

0 coins

Sounds like you did it right. Just double check that you didn't accidentally say you were out of town or unavailable for any days. One wrong answer can hold up everything.

Mine took exactly 8 days after my waiting week to show up in my account. But my friend who applied around the same time got hers in 4 days. Theres no consistency with this system at all lol. Just keep certifying each week even if you havent gotten paid yet - they'll eventually pay the back weeks.

0 coins

That's reassuring to hear. I'll definitely keep certifying. Did you get all your back weeks at once or did they come separately?

0 coins

Got everything at once! woke up to a nice surprise in my bank account. just hang in there

I've been through the ny unemployment process 3 times in the last few years (gotta love the film industry 🙃). Here's what to expect: After your waiting week, you should see payment 3-5 business days after you certify for the NEXT eligible week. So if Sept 12 was your waiting week, you would have certified for the next week on the Sunday after (Sept 19). Then expect payment around Wednesday/Thursday. If it's been more than 5 business days after certifying, something might be holding up your claim.

Thanks for the detailed explanation! That timeline makes sense. I'll give it until the end of this week before I panic.

Check your spam folder for emails from DOL. They might have sent you additional questionnaires or forms to fill out that are holding up your payment. happened to me and I nearly missed the deadline to respond.

Hate to be that person but...have you tried calling? 😬 I know its impossible to get through but sometimes theres a random issue that only a human can fix. I used claimyr.com to get through after I couldn't get my payments for a month - turns out there was an employer dispute I didn't know about. One phone call fixed everything.

calling them is literally IMPOSSIBLE. i tried for 2 weeks straight and either got disconnected or the 'call volume too high' message 🤬

0 coins

that's why I used that claimyr service - they do the waiting for you. was skeptical but it actually worked and saved me hours of frustration

I tried calling a few times but always got the message that they're experiencing high call volume. I'll check out that service if I don't see anything by the end of the week. Thanks!

THE ABSOLUTE DEFINITIVE GUIDE TO NY UNEMPLOYMENT PAYMENT TIMING: After years helping people with NY unemployment issues and going through it myself multiple times, here's exactly what to expect: 1) The waiting week is unpaid - this is normal 2) After you certify for the week FOLLOWING your waiting week, payment typically processes in 2-3 business days 3) Direct deposit usually hits 1-2 days after processing (bank dependent) 4) Debit card payments take 3-5 business days after processing 5) COMMON DELAYS: - Identity verification issues - Employer contesting your claim - Answering certification questions incorrectly - System glitches (very common!) If it's been more than 7 business days since you certified and no payment, you NEED to talk to a human. The online system won't tell you what's wrong. The most effective way to reach someone is using claimyr.com - they'll call NY unemployment for you, wait on hold, and connect you with an agent when they get through. It's saved countless people weeks of frustration. Don't wait too long to address payment delays - some issues compound the longer they go unfixed!

This is incredibly helpful, thank you so much for the detailed breakdown! I'll definitely follow this timeline and reach out if I don't see movement soon.

Adding to this - if your employer is disputing anything, that can add WEEKS to the process. Happened to me and I didn't know until I finally reached an agent.

0 coins

100% correct. The system often doesn't show you when there's a dispute or hold. You'll just see nothing happening with no explanation why.

saving this comment! most helpful thing I've seen on here in months 👏

the system is so frustratinggg!!! i had to wait almost a month after my waiting week because they randomly decided they needed to "verify my identity" even tho i submitted everything correctly from the start. no warning, no email, nothing. just silence until i finally got through on the phone.

Are you checking your payment history in your online account or just your bank account? Sometimes it shows as processed in the system days before hitting your bank.

0 coins

I've been checking both - nothing in either one yet 😕

0 coins

what day of the week are you certifying? I found that when I certified on Sunday mornings right when the system opens, I got paid faster than when I waited until later in the week.

0 coins

I've been certifying Sunday mornings around 8am. I thought that would be the fastest way too!

0 coins

you're doing it right then! should definitely see something soon. the whole system runs on ancient technology so delays are pretty common unfortunately

0 coins

my first payment took FOREVER but then they regularized. now i get paid like clockwork every wednesday after certifying on sunday. hang in there!

0 coins

Double check that your banking info is entered correctly in your account. My friend had a typo in her routing number and payments were getting rejected without any notification. took her weeks to figure out why nothing was coming through.

0 coins

Good idea - just checked and my banking info looks correct. Hoping it's just normal processing delays.

I went through something similar last year when I got laid off from my marketing job. The waiting can be really stressful, especially when bills are due! In my experience, NY unemployment payments usually show up 3-4 business days after you certify for the week following your waiting week. Since your waiting week was Sept 12th, and you've been certifying weekly since then, you should definitely see something soon if everything is processing normally. One thing that helped me was setting up text alerts through my bank so I'd know immediately when any deposit hit my account. Also, make sure to keep certifying every week even if you haven't been paid yet - they'll back-pay all the eligible weeks once the payments start flowing. If you don't see anything by Friday, I'd definitely try to get in touch with them somehow. The system can have random glitches that only a human can resolve. Hang in there!

0 coins

Thank you for the reassurance and practical advice! Setting up text alerts is a great idea - I'll do that right now. It's good to know the 3-4 business day timeline is normal. I'll definitely keep certifying every week regardless. The waiting is just nerve-wracking when you're used to a regular paycheck. Fingers crossed I see something by Friday!

I'm going through the exact same thing right now! Filed in late July after my startup laid off half the team, had my waiting week processed in early September, and I'm still waiting for my first payment. It's so frustrating because the online portal makes everything look like it's approved and processing normally, but then... nothing. I've been certifying every Sunday morning religiously and answering all the questions the same way each time. The financial stress is real - I had to ask family for help with rent last month which was really hard. Reading through these comments gives me some hope that it's just normal delays and not something wrong with my claim. I think I might try that Claimyr service if I don't see anything by this weekend. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences - it helps to know I'm not alone in this!

0 coins

You're definitely not alone in this! The same thing happened to me when I was laid off from my consulting job earlier this year. That feeling of everything looking "approved" online but no payments is SO frustrating and anxiety-inducing. It's like being in limbo. I ended up having to wait almost 3 weeks after my waiting week, but when it finally came through, I got all the back payments at once which was a huge relief. The hardest part is not knowing if it's just normal delays or if something is actually wrong. Keep doing exactly what you're doing - certifying every week is crucial even when you're not seeing payments yet. And don't feel bad about asking family for help - this system puts people in impossible situations through no fault of their own. Hopefully both of you see your payments hit this week! 🤞
