Will NY unemployment payments start this week after my waiting period ended?

So my waiting week was finally processed and released on August 17. It shows as 'paid' in my payment history now. Does this mean I should start receiving my regular unemployment payments this week? I was laid off back in June and applied right away, but it took them forever just to process my claim. Been certifying every single week since then but haven't seen a dime yet. This is my first time on unemployment and I'm getting really anxious about when the money will actually hit my account. Has anyone gone through this recently? How long after your waiting week was processed did you start getting regular payments?

Yes, you should get paid this week. Once your waiting week is processed, your payments should start coming in regularly as long as you keep certifying. I got my first payment exactly 4 days after my waiting week was released. Make sure you keep certifying every week no matter what!

Thanks! That gives me some hope. Did your payments come through direct deposit or the debit card? I set up direct deposit but I'm not sure if the first payment might come differently.

I got mine through direct deposit. If you set that up correctly, it should go right to your bank account. They don't send the first payment differently than the others.

not always true tho. my cousin waited almost 2 weeks after her waiting week to get payment. depends on how backed up the system is.

After struggling for weeks trying to get through to ny unemployment, I finally tried a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me a callback with an actual agent. Best thing I ever did to get my payments going! After talking to the rep, my waiting week got processed and my regular payments started within days. Saved me so much frustration and the money started flowing right away. Check out this video to see how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

is this for real? im so sick of trying to call them everyday just to get hung up on 😩

100% for real. I was super skeptical too but I was desperate after trying to call for 3 weeks straight. The service called for me and when they got someone on the line, they connected me. Talking to a real person fixed my issues in minutes.

yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

0 coins

No catch - they just automate the calling process and wait on hold so you don't have to. When they get through, they connect you with the agent. It worked exactly as advertised for me, saved me hours of frustration.

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? the unemployment system is literally DESIGNED to be impossible to navigate

I can confirm it works. Used it last month when my claim was stuck in limbo for 5 weeks. Got a callback within a couple hours, agent fixed everything, and I got all my backpay 3 days later.

I was in the same situation back in April. My waiting week got processed and then I got my first payment 5 business days later. One thing to watch out for - make sure your payment history actually says "paid" and not "pending" for that waiting week. If it says paid, you're good to go!

It totally depends on how backed up they are. After my waiting week was processed last year, I got my first payment 3 days later. But my friend just went through this last month and it took over a week. The whole system is so inconsistent.

That's what I'm worried about - the inconsistency. I'm already behind on bills and was hoping to be able to predict when the money would come in.

I know it's stressful but hang in there. If your waiting week is processed, you WILL get paid, it's just a question of when. Have you set up text alerts? Sometimes that gives you a heads up before the money hits your account.

The NY unemployment system is SUCH a joke. I've been dealing with them for months and nothing makes sense. My waiting week was released and I still didn't get paid for another 16 days because of some "technical issue" they couldn't explain. Then suddenly all the money appeared at once. Keep calling them until you get answers.

THIS!!! 💯 The system is designed to be frustrating so people give up. DONT GIVE UP!

calling them is literally impossible tho. I tried for 2 weeks straight and couldn't get through

try claimyr.com - they'll wait on hold for you and connect you when they get an agent. worked for me when I was in this exact situation

Here's what most people don't know about how NY unemployment actually works behind the scenes. Once your waiting week is processed, the system runs a batch process every Tuesday and Friday night to queue up payments. If your waiting week was released on 8/17, your payment was likely included in the Friday batch and should hit your account Tuesday or Wednesday this week. I used to work adjacent to this system, and the most important things to know are: 1. Always keep certifying weekly even if you're not getting paid yet 2. The online payment history is the most accurate view of your status 3. If you see "pending" for more than 7 days, something is stuck 4. The fastest way to resolve issues is to speak directly with an agent If you're stuck waiting, I highly recommend using claimyr.com to get connected with an agent. Unlike trying to call yourself (which is nearly impossible), they use automated technology to wait on hold and only connect you when there's a live agent ready to talk. It's the only reliable way I've found to actually get through to someone who can help. Once you talk to an agent, make sure to get a confirmation number for your call and ask specifically when you can expect payment. This creates a record in their system that your case was reviewed.

Thank you for such a detailed explanation! The Tuesday/Friday batch process info is super helpful - explains why some people see different timelines. I'll keep an eye out for the payment this week.

This is gold 🔥 Should be pinned to the top of the subreddit tbh

not to be that person, but the batch processing schedule changed slightly last year - they now run batches Mon/Wed/Fri nights. Source: spoke to a supervisor last month who confirmed this.

You're right - thanks for the correction! The schedule did change recently. The Mon/Wed/Fri schedule is current as of 2023.

check ur bank account! sometimes the money shows up before the website updates. i got my first payment 2 days after my waiting week processed but the website didn't show it as paid for like 4 more days lol. typical NY unemployment efficiency 🤡

The waiting week thing is so frustrating! I got laid off in February and my waiting week wasn't processed until March! Then started getting payments after that. But a friend of mine had his waiting week processed on a Monday and got paid that Thursday. There's no rhyme or reason to it.

they do this on purpose to make people give up. the whole system is designed to be confusing so fewer people collect benefits.

0 coins

that's not entirely true. it's more incompetence than conspiracy. I know someone who works there and they're just overwhelmed and using outdated systems.

0 coins

por que no los dos? 🤷‍♀️ can be both incompetence AND intentionally difficult

Make sure you're certifying for benefits every single week! I had my waiting week processed but then missed certifying for one week and it messed everything up. Had to call and get it sorted out, which took forever.

I've been certifying religiously every Sunday since I applied. Haven't missed a single week. At least I'm doing something right!

0 coins

anyone else notice how the ny unemployment website always seems to be "under maintenance" exactly when you need to use it? 😤

0 coins

OMGGG YESSS! Always on Sunday mornings when everyone's trying to certify!

0 coins

pro tip: try certifying late Sunday night or early Monday morning. way fewer people online and the system runs faster.

If you need money urgently while waiting for unemployment to start, look into emergency assistance programs. NY has some decent options. When I was waiting for my first unemployment check, I got help with rent through ERAP. Just google "NY emergency assistance" and you'll find some resources.

Your timeline sounds normal. I waited 6 weeks total from application to first payment (including the waiting week). My waiting week was released on June 4th and my first actual payment hit my account on June 8th. The system is slow but it does eventually work.
