NY unemployment waiting week released July 22 - when will payments actually start?

I just checked my NY unemployment account and saw that my waiting week was finally released on July 22, 2025! I've been super stressed about money and really need to know - does this mean I'll start getting my weekly benefits THIS week? Or is there another delay I should expect? The online system is so confusing and I've already been waiting almost a month since I first filed. Anyone know how long after the waiting week is released until the actual payments start showing up in my account?

Yes, you should receive your first regular payment within 3-5 business days after your waiting week shows as 'released.' The waiting week is unpaid, but once it's processed, the system usually starts paying benefits for weeks after that pretty quickly. Make sure you've set up direct deposit in your payment preferences section if you haven't already - that's faster than the debit card option.

Thank you so much! I did set up direct deposit already. So I should see money by like Monday at the latest? That would be such a relief!

dont count on it lol... my waiting week got 'released' back in April and then NOTHING happened for 2 more weeks!! The system is completely BROKEN. I had to call like 50 times before I finally got through to a human who could fix whatever mysterious 'flag' was on my account. No explanation, just 'we'll fix it'... such bs

Ugh seriously?? That's what I'm worried about. Did they at least backpay you for those weeks you were waiting?

yeah they did eventually backpay everything but it took FOREVER and I was almost evicted waiting for it. the whole system is designed to make you give up!!!

I had the same question last month! For me, the payment hit my account exactly 2 business days after the waiting week was released. So if yours was released on July 22, you should see payment by July 24-25 depending on your bank. But if you don't see anything by Monday, definitely call because sometimes there are random holds that need to be cleared manually.

That's super helpful, thank you! I bank with Chase so hopefully it won't take too long once NYSDOL releases it.

I was in the exact same boat back in March, waiting week released but no payment. Tried calling for days but couldn't get through. The recorded message kept saying 'high call volume' and disconnecting me! I finally used Claimyr.com to reach an agent (they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE). Got through in about 20 minutes and found out there was a verification issue they needed to clear manually. First payment arrived next day! Might be worth it if you don't see your payment by Monday.

Never heard of that service before, but I might need it if nothing happens by Monday. Thanks for the tip!

I used Claimyr too when my account got stuck during the identity verification. Saved me from having to call 100+ times.

Have you been continuing to certify for benefits each week? Even with your waiting week released, you still need to certify for every week you want payment. A lot of people miss this step and wonder why money isn't showing up. Just checking!

Yes! I've been certifying every Sunday like clockwork. Haven't missed a single week since I applied.

i waited 8 days after my waiting week thing. but my cousin got his the very next day. i think its because my bank is slower maybe? or maybe the system just randomly makes some people wait longer lol who knows

Quick update on timing: The NYSDOL system typically processes payments in batches overnight, so if your waiting week was released on July 22, the system likely processed your first regular payment that night or the next. Then it takes 1-3 business days for the bank transfer to complete. So if you don't see anything by Monday morning (allowing for weekend delays), that would be the time to contact them.

This is really good info, thanks! I'll give it until Monday morning before I start panicking then.

UPDATE: Got my first payment this morning (Friday)! So it took 3 days after the waiting week was released. Such a relief! Thanks everyone for your help and advice!

Congrats Henrietta! That's awesome news. Three days is actually pretty fast for NY unemployment - you got lucky with the timing over the weekend too. Hope your weekly payments keep coming smoothly from here on out!

Congrats on getting your first payment! This is such valuable info for others going through the same thing. It's really helpful to see the actual timeline - waiting week released Tuesday, payment received Friday. That 3-day turnaround gives people a realistic expectation instead of just guessing. Hope your weekly certifications continue to process smoothly from here!

Exactly! Having real timelines like this is so much better than the vague "3-5 business days" they give you on the website. It's nice to see someone actually get their payment without having to jump through a million hoops or call dozens of times. Hopefully this thread helps other people know what to expect!

This is such a helpful thread! I'm in a similar situation - my waiting week was just released yesterday (July 26th) so based on your experience, I should hopefully see my first payment by Monday or Tuesday. It's reassuring to see that the system actually worked properly for you without needing to call or use third-party services. The 3-day timeline from waiting week release to payment is really good to know. Thanks for sharing the update - it gives those of us still waiting some realistic expectations!

That's great timing Carmen! Based on Henrietta's experience, you should definitely see your payment early next week. It's so nice to finally have a real success story with actual dates instead of just horror stories about the system being broken. Fingers crossed your payment comes through just as smoothly! Make sure you keep certifying each week and hopefully you won't need any of those workaround services people mentioned.

This whole thread is exactly what I needed to see! I'm still waiting for my waiting week to be released (filed about 3 weeks ago) and seeing Henrietta's timeline from release to payment in just 3 days gives me hope that once mine gets processed, I won't be stuck in limbo forever. The NY unemployment system documentation is so vague about actual timelines, so having real experiences like this is invaluable. Definitely bookmarking this thread to reference when my waiting week hopefully gets released soon. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences - both the success stories and the horror stories help set realistic expectations!

I'm so glad this thread is helpful! When I was waiting for my waiting week to be released, I was constantly searching for real timelines and experiences like this. The official NYSDOL website gives you basically no useful information about what to actually expect. Three weeks is definitely a long time to wait for the waiting week release - I was stressed after just one week! Hopefully yours gets processed soon. Once it does, based on what we've seen here, you should get your first payment pretty quickly. Keep checking your account regularly and don't give up - the system does eventually work for most people, even if it takes way longer than it should.

This thread is so incredibly helpful! I'm currently in week 2 of waiting for my waiting week to be released and was starting to panic about when payments would actually start. Seeing Henrietta's real timeline - waiting week released Tuesday, payment received Friday - gives me actual hope instead of just the vague "processing times may vary" messages from NYSDOL. It's also really valuable to see both the success stories and the warnings about potential delays. I've already set up direct deposit and have been certifying every week, so hopefully when my waiting week gets released I'll have a similar smooth experience. Thanks everyone for sharing your real experiences - this is way more useful than anything on the official website!

I'm in the exact same boat as you Zara - week 2 of waiting for my waiting week release and getting more anxious every day! This thread has been a lifesaver for managing expectations. It's so frustrating that NYSDOL doesn't give clearer timelines, but seeing Henrietta's 3-day turnaround from release to payment is really encouraging. I've also got direct deposit set up and have been religiously certifying every Sunday. Fingers crossed both of our waiting weeks get released soon and we have similarly smooth experiences! Thanks to everyone who shared their real timelines here - it makes such a difference when you're stressed about money.

Just wanted to add my experience to help others with timing expectations! My waiting week was released on a Wednesday and I received my first payment the following Monday - so 5 calendar days but only 3 business days. I think the weekend definitely slowed things down a bit. What really helped was having direct deposit already set up AND making sure I had certified for benefits that first week after my waiting week was released. I almost forgot to certify thinking the payment would be automatic, but you definitely still need to do your weekly certification even after the waiting week is processed. Hope this helps anyone else going through the same stress!
