When will I get first NY unemployment payment after waiting week of September 9th?
I certified for my waiting week on September 9th, 2025 for NY unemployment. This was my first time filing and I'm confused about when I'll actually see the first payment hit my account. The website says something about benefits being paid the next week but it's been a few days and nothing yet. Do they send payment right after the waiting week or do I need to do something else? Getting anxious because rent is coming up soon.

The waiting week is unpaid in New York. You won't get payment for that week. After you certify for your first PAYABLE week (which would be the week after your waiting week), you should receive payment within 3-5 business days. So if your waiting week ended September 9th, you should have certified for your first payable week this past Sunday, and payment should arrive by Thursday or Friday.

•Thanks for explaining! So just to make sure I understand correctly - I certified on Sunday the 16th for the week after my waiting week. So payment should be coming by this Friday? Does it usually come faster with direct deposit?

Did you set up direct deposit? I made that mistake my first time and was waiting for a deposit but they actually mailed me a debit card which took like 2 weeks to arrive.

•Yes I did set up direct deposit! I triple-checked my bank info when I entered it too.

A few things that could be happening here: 1. Your claim might be under review. This is very common for first-time filers. 2. There might be an identity verification issue. 3. Your bank info might have an error despite triple-checking. If it's been more than 3 business days since you certified for your first payable week, I recommend calling NYSDOL to check on your claim status. You can also check your payment history online - if it shows "pending" that usually means there's a review happening.

•I just checked the payment history and it says "pending review" - does that mean there's a problem? How long does the review usually take?

Omg I'm going through the EXACT SAME THING!! My waiting week was Sept 2 and I certified on the 9th AND the 16th and still NOTHING in my account!!! The website says pending for both weeks and when I called the automated system it said something about my claim being under review but didn't explain WHY?!? I'm seriously about to panic because my car payment is due next week and I have NO IDEA what's happening!!!!

•Reviews are normal, especially for first-time filers. They typically take 2-3 weeks to complete. The best thing to do is try to speak with a claims specialist who can tell you exactly what's being reviewed and if you need to provide any additional information.

I was in this same situation last month. "Pending review" can take FOREVER if you just wait it out. After 2 weeks of nothing, I tried calling but couldn't get through to anyone for days. Finally used Claimyr.com to get through to an agent (they have this system that calls for you until they get a representative, then connects you - there's a demo at https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE). The agent told me they needed additional employment verification which I never would have known. Once I sent that in, payment was released within 48 hours. Definitely recommend calling rather than just waiting - there's probably something specific they need from you.

•Thank you! I'll try calling tomorrow. If I can't get through I might try that service you mentioned. Did they tell you why your claim was under review when you finally got through?

Mine was under review because my employer disputed my eligibility. They claimed I quit but I was actually laid off. Had to wait almost a MONTH for them to sort it out and didn't get a PENNY until it was resolved. The system is totally BROKEN!!!

•A month?? I really hope mine doesn't take that long. Did you have to do anything special to get it resolved?

@OP - To answer your question - yes, they told me exactly why my claim was under review. In my case it was because I had worked in two different states within the past 18 months, so they needed to verify my out-of-state wages. The important thing is that I would never have known this if I hadn't spoken to someone. The online system just says "pending review" with no details.

•Did you have to provide pay stubs or anything? I worked a temp job in New Jersey for 3 weeks last year... I wonder if thats why mine is held up too???

Yes, if you worked in multiple states, they may need to verify your wages through an interstate claim process. This typically adds 2-3 weeks to the initial claim processing time. For the original poster, there could be many reasons for a review - income verification, identity verification, employer response, etc. The important thing is to contact NYSDOL directly to find out what's needed in your specific case.

•I managed to get through to someone today! Turns out they needed to verify my identity because my current address is different from what was on my W-2. They're sending me a link to upload my ID and said payments should be released within 48 hours after verification. Thanks everyone for your help!

This happened to my cousin too - the identity verification thing. Once he uploaded his documents it took exactly 2 days and then all the pending payments came through at once. So you should be good soon!
