NY unemployment payments timing after waiting week - when will I get first deposit?
I just completed my unpaid waiting week for NY unemployment benefits and I'm confused about when my first actual payment will arrive? The website doesn't give a clear timeline. Is it supposed to be the next week after certification or does it take longer? Anyone know how long I should expect to wait before I see money in my account? Getting kinda anxious since rent is coming up soon.

Generally, you should receive your first payment 2-3 business days after certifying for your first payable week (which is the week right after your waiting week). So if you certified on Sunday or Monday, you might see money by Wednesday or Thursday. Make sure your direct deposit info is set up correctly in your account!

•Thanks! I certified Sunday night. So hopefully it'll come through tomorrow or Thursday. Do they notify you when the payment is processed or does it just show up?

•That's a pretty big difference. Wonder why some people get it faster than others?

•dunno. maybe banks process stuff different? or maybe my friend just counted wrong lol

The first payment always takes the longest because the system is still processing your claim completely. After the first payment, subsequent weeks are much more predictable. I was SO STRESSED waiting for mine to come through - took almost 7 business days for my first payment back in January! After that, always hit my account by Wednesday morning like clockwork. Just hang in there!

•7 days?? That's a long time! Did you have to call them or did it just eventually show up?

The official timeline from NYSDOL is 3-5 business days after certification for direct deposit, and 7-10 days for the debit card option. However, I've noticed that first payments sometimes take 1-2 days longer while they validate everything. You can check your payment status under "Payment History" on the website - it will show "Released on [date]" when the payment is processed. If you don't see anything by Friday, it might be worth calling to verify everything is properly set up.

•Thank you for the detailed info! I checked the Payment History section and it does show "Released on 4/15/2025" so I guess that means it's on the way? Strange it hasn't shown up yet.

•Yes, that's good news! If it shows as released, it should be on its way. The actual deposit timing depends on your bank's processing schedule. Some banks hold ACH transfers for 24-48 hours, especially for new payment sources. I'd expect you'll see it by tomorrow morning.

Had the SAME exact question when i filed in February! My first payment came exactly 4 business days after i certified. But honestly the most stressful part was not knowing if everything was set up right and wondering if I needed to call someone. So much anxiety about whether I'd done something wrong or if the system was just slow.

•When I was waiting for my first payment last month, I spent HOURS trying to call NYSDOL with no luck getting through. Finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got connected to an agent in about 20 minutes who confirmed my payment was actually pending and just needed an address verification. Saved me weeks of waiting! They have a video of how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE - totally worth it to get actual answers instead of stressing.

My brother filed for NY unemployment like two months ago and had the same question. He got his first payment like 4 days after the waiting week. BTW did you know they take taxes out automatically if you selected that option? My brother didn't realize that and was confused why his payment was less than expected.

•Yes, I did choose to have taxes withheld. Better than owing a bunch next year at tax time. Thanks for the info about the timing!

DONT PANIC if it takes longer than expected!!! The system is SO GLITCHY in 2025!! my first payment took almost 2 weeks even though the website said it was released!!! I called like 20 times before getting through and they said it was a "processing delay" whatever that means. Second payment came right on time though. The whole system is just broken.

Quick update for anyone finding this thread: the NYSDOL revised their payment processing schedule in May 2025. Now if you certify on Sunday, payments are typically processed Monday and hit accounts Tuesday-Wednesday for most major banks. Credit unions and smaller banks might still take an extra day or two. First payments still tend to take slightly longer than recurring ones.

•Update: My payment finally arrived this morning! So that was 3 business days after it was released. Thanks everyone for your help and information!

Glad to hear your payment came through! For future reference, you can also set up text notifications through your NY.gov account to get alerts when payments are processed. It helped reduce my anxiety during the waiting periods. The notification usually comes about 12-24 hours before the money hits your account, so you'll know it's coming instead of constantly checking your balance.

•That's a great tip about the text notifications! I didn't even know that was an option. Going to set that up right now so I don't have to stress like this again for future certifications. Thanks for sharing!

Just went through this process myself last month! The waiting can be really nerve-wracking, especially when you're counting on that money. In my experience, the first payment took about 4 business days after certification, but I've heard it can vary from 2-7 days depending on your bank and if there are any verification issues. One thing that helped my peace of mind was checking the "Payment History" section regularly - once it shows "Released" you know it's on the way. Also make sure your direct deposit info is 100% correct because any errors there can cause major delays. The good news is that once you get past the first payment, future ones are usually much more predictable!

•Thanks for sharing your experience! It's really reassuring to hear from someone who went through the same thing recently. I'm definitely going to keep checking that Payment History section - seems like that's the best way to track progress. Good point about double-checking the direct deposit info too. I think I verified it like 3 times already but maybe I should look one more time just to be absolutely sure there are no typos or anything. The unpredictability of that first payment timing is definitely stressful when you're already dealing with being unemployed!

I went through this exact situation in March! After my waiting week, it took exactly 3 business days for my first payment to show up in my account. I certified on a Sunday evening and saw the money hit my bank account Wednesday morning. The key thing is to make sure you're checking the "Payment History" section on the NYSDOL website - once it shows "Released" you'll know it's processed and on the way. Also, if you're using direct deposit with a major bank like Chase or Bank of America, it tends to be faster than smaller banks or credit unions. Don't panic if it takes up to 5 business days though - that's still totally normal for first payments. The system just needs extra time to verify everything on your initial claim. Hang in there!

•That's really helpful timing info, thanks! I'm also dealing with this right now and it's good to know that 3 days is pretty typical. I certified Sunday night too so hopefully I'll see something by Wednesday like you did. Quick question - did you get any kind of notification when it was released or did you just have to keep checking the Payment History section manually? I've been refreshing that page way too much probably lol. The waiting is definitely the worst part of this whole process!

•I didn't get any automatic notifications when it was released - I had to keep checking manually too! Though someone mentioned earlier that you can set up text alerts through your NY.gov account which sounds super helpful. I probably checked that Payment History page like 10 times a day until I saw "Released" show up. The anticipation is definitely brutal, especially when you're already stressed about finances. But once you see that "Released" status, you can breathe a little easier knowing it's actually coming!

Just wanted to add my recent experience to help others going through this! I completed my waiting week in late March and was super anxious about the first payment timing too. Mine ended up taking exactly 4 business days after certification - I certified on Sunday night and the money hit my account Thursday morning. What really helped my stress levels was discovering you can actually call your bank to ask if they see any pending ACH deposits coming in. My bank was able to tell me Tuesday that there was a pending unemployment deposit that would clear Thursday, which saved me from constantly refreshing my account balance! Also worth noting that my friend who banks with a credit union had to wait an extra day compared to me (I'm with Wells Fargo). The first payment really is the longest wait - after that it's been super consistent every week.

•That's a brilliant tip about calling your bank to check for pending ACH deposits! I never would have thought of that but it makes total sense - they can probably see stuff in the pipeline before it actually shows up in your account. Definitely going to try that if I'm still waiting by tomorrow. It's so stressful constantly refreshing your balance and seeing the same number over and over. Really appreciate you sharing the timeline details too - 4 days seems to be pretty common from what everyone's saying. Good to know about the credit union vs big bank difference as well since I'm with a smaller local bank.

I'm in the exact same boat right now! Just finished my waiting week and certified yesterday (Monday). The uncertainty is killing me because I have bills due this week too. From reading everyone's experiences here, it sounds like 3-5 business days is pretty normal for that first payment, which gives me some hope. I'm definitely going to try calling my bank tomorrow to see if they can spot any pending deposits like Raj suggested - that's such a smart idea! Also planning to set up those text notifications that were mentioned. It's reassuring to see so many people sharing their timelines and that most folks did eventually get their payments, even if some took longer than expected. The waiting game is brutal but at least we're not alone in this!

•I totally feel you on the anxiety! I went through this same thing a few months ago and the waiting was absolutely nerve-wracking. One thing that helped me was checking the Payment History section multiple times a day - once you see "Released" you know it's actually on its way to your bank. Also, if you haven't already, double-check that your direct deposit info is 100% correct because even a small typo can cause major delays. The good news is that based on everyone's experiences here, 3-4 days seems to be the sweet spot for most people. You certified Monday so I'd expect to see something by Thursday or Friday at the latest. Hang in there - the first payment is definitely the most stressful but it does come through!

I went through this same anxiety just a few weeks ago! My first payment took 5 business days after certification, which felt like forever when you're watching every penny. What really helped was setting up account alerts with my bank so I'd get a text the moment any deposit hit my account - saved me from obsessively checking my balance 20 times a day. Also, if your payment doesn't show up by day 5, don't hesitate to call NYSDOL. I know their phone lines are terrible, but sometimes there are small issues that need to be resolved (like address verification or direct deposit confirmation) that can hold things up. The good news is once you get that first payment, the subsequent ones are much more predictable and usually arrive within 2-3 days. Hang in there - it's coming!
