When will I start receiving unemployment benefits from NYS Department of Labor?
I applied for unemployment benefits two weeks ago after getting laid off from my retail job. My claim was approved and I've been doing my weekly certifications, but I haven't received any payments yet. The website just says 'claim processed' but no money has hit my account. When should I expect to actually start receiving unemployment benefits? I'm getting really anxious about paying my rent next week.

Typically you'll receive your first payment 2-3 business days after your first weekly claim is processed. Since you mentioned you've been doing weekly certifications, check if there are any pending issues on your claim. Log into your ny.gov account and look for any alerts or additional information requests that might be holding up your payments.

•I checked and don't see any alerts or pending issues. My weekly claims show as 'processed' for both weeks I've certified. Should I be worried?

The waiting can be nerve-wracking! In my experience, even after approval it can take up to a week for the payment system to catch up. Make sure you're using direct deposit - that's usually faster than waiting for a debit card to arrive in the mail. Also double-check that your banking info is correct in the system.

•I did set up direct deposit when I applied. My bank info looks correct on the website. Guess I just need to be patient a bit longer.

If you're having trouble getting through to someone at NYS Department of Labor to check on your payment status, I had success using Claimyr recently. It's a service that helps you actually reach a live agent without sitting on hold forever. Check out claimyr.com - they even have a demo video at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Saved me hours of frustration trying to get answers about my delayed payments.

•Never heard of that before but might be worth trying if the wait gets much longer. The phone system is definitely impossible to get through on.

Just to add my 2 cents - I got my first payment exactly 5 business days after my first weekly certification was processed. Every week after that it was like clockwork, same day each week. Hang in there!
