How long after waiting week for unemployment benefits to actually start in NY?

I just completed my waiting week for unemployment in NY and I'm wondering how long it typically takes after that for the actual benefits to start coming? I filed my initial claim about 10 days ago, did my waiting week last week, and now I'm filing my second weekly claim today. My claim status shows as active but I haven't received any payments yet. Is this normal? How long should I expect to wait after the waiting week before I see money in my account?

Usually it takes 2-3 business days after you file your weekly claim for the payment to hit your account, assuming there are no issues with your claim. Since you just finished your waiting week, your first payment should process with this week's filing. Make sure you're checking the right account - NYS Department of Labor uses direct deposit if you set it up, otherwise they mail a debit card.

Thanks! I did set up direct deposit so I'll keep checking my bank account. Good to know it's only a few days typically.

mine took like a week after my waiting week was done, but that was because they had to verify my employment history first

The waiting week is such BS honestly. Like we're not already stressed enough about money and they make you wait an extra week for no reason. But yeah, after that first week you should get paid pretty quickly as long as your claim doesn't go into adjudication or anything.

I totally agree about the waiting week being frustrating! But just so you know, there actually is a reason for it - it's required by federal law and helps ensure people are genuinely unemployed rather than just between jobs briefly.

If you're not seeing payments after a full week past your waiting week, that's when I'd start calling NYS Department of Labor. The problem is actually getting through to someone - I spent hours on hold multiple times. A friend told me about this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that basically calls for you and gets you connected to an actual person. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Saved me so much frustration when I had issues with my claim status.

Interesting, I've never heard of that service. Might be worth looking into if I run into problems. Hopefully I won't need it though!

Just keep filing your weekly claims on time even if you haven't been paid yet!! I made the mistake of thinking I shouldn't file until I got my first payment and it messed up my whole claim timeline.
