How long after waiting week for unemployment benefits to actually start in Washington?
I just completed my waiting week for unemployment in Washington and I'm wondering how long it typically takes after that for benefits to actually start coming in? I filed my initial claim about 2 weeks ago, served my waiting week last week, and filed my weekly claim on Sunday. My claim status shows 'processed' but I haven't received any payment yet. Is this normal? Should I expect another delay or does the money usually come pretty quickly after the waiting week is done?

Usually takes 2-3 business days after you file your weekly claim for the payment to hit your account, assuming everything is approved. The waiting week is just unpaid - after that first week you should get paid for subsequent weeks if you're eligible.

•Thanks! So if I filed my weekly claim Sunday I should see something by Wednesday or Thursday?

•Yeah that's typically the timeline. Check your payment history on your Washington ESD account to see if the payment is showing as issued.

•Glad I'm not the only one! The whole process feels so slow when you need the money.

•It's frustrating but pretty standard. The waiting week is federally required and then there's always processing time.

The waiting week is just the first week of your claim that goes unpaid. After that, payments should be regular as long as you keep filing weekly claims and meeting job search requirements. If your claim shows processed, you're probably good to go.

•What are the job search requirements? I've been looking but haven't kept detailed records.

•You need to do 3 job search activities per week and keep a log. WorkSourceWA activities count too.

•Wait I thought you didn't have to do job search during the waiting week?

I had issues getting through to Washington ESD when my payments were delayed after the waiting week. If you're having trouble reaching them, I found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ and their site is claimyr.com. Saved me hours of calling.

•Interesting, have you actually used it? I've been dreading having to call if something goes wrong.

•Yeah I used it last month when my claim got stuck. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

•How much does something like that cost though?

The waiting week is so stupid. Like we're not already struggling enough without losing that first week of benefits completely.

•I know right? Other states don't even have waiting weeks anymore.

•It's a federal requirement in most states, not just Washington. Supposed to reduce fraudulent claims.

•Still doesn't make it any less frustrating when you're broke

Just went through this exact same thing last month. Filed my claim, did the waiting week, then filed my first weekly claim. Payment showed up 3 days later via direct deposit. You should be fine if your status shows processed.

•That's reassuring, thanks! Did you have to do anything special or just wait?

Derek Olson
•Nope just waited. The hardest part is the anxiety while you're waiting for that first payment.

check your payment method too - if you didn't set up direct deposit the debit card can take longer to arrive

•I did set up direct deposit so hopefully that speeds things up

•oh crap I forgot to set that up, am I screwed?

•no you can still change it in your account settings, just might delay this first payment

One thing to watch out for - make sure you're filing your weekly claims on time every week. Miss one and it can mess up your whole payment schedule. The deadline is usually Saturday night.

Jasmine Hancock
•Good to know, I filed mine Sunday morning. That should be okay right?

Cole Roush
•Yeah you're fine, the deadline is for the week ending Saturday. So you file by the following Saturday.

•Wait I'm confused about the timing. Do we file for the week that just ended or the upcoming week?

This whole system is so confusing. First the waiting week, then weekly claims, job search logs... why can't they just make it simple?

•It's designed to verify you're actually unemployed and looking for work. The requirements aren't that bad once you get used to the routine.

Had a friend who had to wait like 6 weeks after his waiting week because his claim went into adjudication. Hope that doesn't happen to you!

Jasmine Hancock
•Ugh don't say that! What caused the adjudication?

Anna Kerber
•Something about his separation from his last job, they had to investigate

Rachel Tao
•That's exactly when Claimyr would be helpful - getting through to check on adjudication status

For future reference, you can check your claim status and payment history in your SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account. If payments are issued, they'll show up there before they hit your bank account.

•I've been checking that obsessively! Nothing new since Sunday but hopefully soon.

•YES! It crashes constantly and the design is from like 2005

The waiting week serves its purpose but man does it suck when you're already financially stressed from losing your job. Hang in there OP, sounds like you're doing everything right.

Pro tip: set up text alerts for your claim so you get notified when payments are processed. Saves you from constantly checking the website.

Jasmine Hancock
•How do you set that up? I don't see that option in my account.

Jabari-Jo
•Should be under notification preferences in your profile settings

•I think that feature is only available if you have the debit card, not for direct deposit

Waiting week is annoying but at least Washington processes claims faster than some other states. My cousin in California waited like 8 weeks just to get approved.

If you're really worried about the delay, you could try calling Washington ESD directly. The number is on their website but good luck getting through - lines are always busy.

•Yeah I've heard horror stories about trying to call them

•That's why I mentioned Claimyr earlier - they handle the calling hassle for you and get you connected to an actual person

The whole unemployment system needs an overhaul. Too much bureaucracy and not enough help for people who actually need it.

•There are legitimate reasons for the requirements, but I agree the process could be more user-friendly

Make sure you're keeping track of your job search activities from day one. Even during the waiting week it's good to start building that habit.

•Good advice, I've been looking but not keeping detailed records. Need to start doing that.

Been there with the waiting week anxiety. It's nerve-wracking when you're already stressed about money. But once that first payment comes through, the relief is huge.

Final thought - if your payment doesn't show up by Friday, that's when I'd start to worry and maybe contact Washington ESD. But based on what you've described, everything sounds normal.
