When will I get my unemployment payment - Washington ESD processing times?
Filed my initial claim with Washington ESD two weeks ago and still haven't received any payment. My weekly claims are showing as processed but no money has hit my account yet. Is this normal? How long does it usually take to get your first unemployment payment after filing? I'm getting really stressed about rent being due next week.

It typically takes 2-3 weeks for your first payment after filing your initial claim with Washington ESD. Make sure you've completed all the required steps including your job search registration with WorkSource WA.

•I did register with WorkSource but haven't heard anything back from them either. Should I be worried?

•No that's pretty normal, WorkSource registration is just a requirement for UI benefits, you don't need to hear back from them right away.

Check your account on the Washington ESD website to see if there are any pending issues. Sometimes claims get stuck in adjudication and they don't always notify you right away.

•How do I check for pending issues? I logged in but don't see anything obvious.

•Look for a section called 'Pending Issues' or 'Adjudication' in your account dashboard. If you see anything there, that's probably what's delaying your payment.

I had the same problem last month and it turned out Washington ESD needed additional verification documents. You might want to try calling them to check on your claim status, though getting through can be really difficult with their phone system.

•I've tried calling like 50 times and either get a busy signal or get disconnected after waiting on hold for hours. It's so frustrating!

•Have you tried using Claimyr? I found them a few weeks ago when I was having the same issue getting through to Washington ESD. They basically get you connected to an actual agent without all the hold time and busy signals. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that before, is it legit? Sounds too good to be true.

Washington ESD payments usually come on Tuesdays or Wednesdays if there are no issues with your claim. But the first payment always takes longer because they have to verify everything.

•This is correct, I've been on UI for 3 months now and my payments come every Tuesday like clockwork. But that first one took almost a month.

•A whole month?? I can't wait that long, I have bills due now.

make sure you didnt mess up anything on your weekly claim filing. if you put the wrong dates or forgot to certify something it can delay everything

•I double checked everything when I filed, I'm pretty sure I did it right. But maybe I should go back and look again.

•You can't change a weekly claim after it's submitted, so if there was an error you'd need to contact Washington ESD to correct it.

The system is just slow right now, I think they're still dealing with backlogs from all the changes they made to the system. My cousin waited 3 weeks for her first payment last month.

•Three weeks seems to be the magic number everyone keeps mentioning. Guess I just have to be patient.

•Patience doesn't pay the bills though! I get why you're stressed about this.

Actually going back to what that other person mentioned about Claimyr - I ended up trying it myself after being frustrated with the phone system and it actually worked. Got connected to a Washington ESD rep in about 10 minutes instead of the usual 2+ hour wait times. The site is claimyr.com if you want to check it out.

•Did they charge you anything for it? I'm already broke waiting for my unemployment to come through.

•They have different options but honestly it was worth it just to finally talk to someone who could tell me what was going on with my claim. Way better than wasting entire days trying to get through on the phone.

•I'm skeptical of any service that charges to help with government benefits, seems like it should be free to get help with your own claim.

Two weeks isn't that long honestly. Some people wait 4-6 weeks for their first payment, especially if there are any complications with their work history or if they quit their job instead of being laid off.

Sean O'Donnell
•I was laid off due to company downsizing, so that shouldn't be an issue. Maybe I'm just being impatient.

Andre Laurent
•Layoffs are usually pretty straightforward, so you're probably just in the normal processing queue. Hang in there.

Have you checked if your direct deposit information is correct? Sometimes payments get delayed because the bank info is wrong or incomplete.

Sean O'Donnell
•Good point, let me double check that. I did change banks recently so maybe I put in the wrong routing number or something.

Emily Jackson
•Yeah definitely check that, it's an easy thing to mess up and Washington ESD won't necessarily tell you if a payment bounced back.

I remember when I first filed, the waiting was the worst part. You just have to trust the system is working even when it feels like nothing is happening. Eventually the money will come through.

•Thanks for the encouragement, I really needed to hear that. It's just scary when you don't know when your next paycheck is coming.

If you do end up needing to call Washington ESD, try calling right at 8am when they open. You'll still have to wait but your chances of getting through are better first thing in the morning.

•I tried that already and still couldn't get through. The phone system is just overwhelmed I think.

Nia Thompson
•That's exactly why I ended up using Claimyr - the regular phone system was just impossible. Saved me so much time and frustration.

Washington ESD payments are usually pretty reliable once you get into the system. The first payment is always the slowest because they have to verify your wages and make sure everything checks out with your former employer.
0 coins
Sean O'Donnell
•That makes sense, I guess they have to be thorough to prevent fraud and stuff.
0 coins
Isabella Brown
•Exactly, they have to contact your employer to verify the reason for separation and your wage history. That's usually what takes the most time.

Don't panic yet, two weeks is still within the normal range. I'd start worrying if it hits 4 weeks with no communication.

•Okay I'll try to be patient for another week or two. If nothing happens by then I'll definitely try to call or use that Claimyr thing people mentioned.

•Good plan, give it a little more time but don't let it drag on forever without getting answers.

Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even if you haven't gotten paid yet. If you miss filing a week you could lose those benefits permanently.

Sean O'Donnell
•Yeah I've been keeping up with the weekly filings, even though it feels pointless when no money is coming through.

Emma Garcia
•It's not pointless! Those weekly claims are what trigger your payments once your initial claim gets approved. Keep filing them.

The waiting game with unemployment is brutal. I remember checking my bank account like 10 times a day waiting for that first payment to show up.

•That's exactly what I'm doing! It's driving me crazy but I can't help myself.

One thing to remember is that when your first payment does come through, it should include back pay for all the weeks you've been waiting. So you'll get a bigger chunk of money all at once.
0 coins
Sean O'Donnell
•Oh that's actually really helpful to know! I was wondering if I'd lose those weeks of benefits.
0 coins
Layla Mendes
•Nope, as long as you've been filing your weekly claims you'll get paid for all of them retroactively.

If you're really worried about it, you could try checking your claim status online or through the Washington ESD mobile app. Sometimes there's information there that doesn't show up on the main website.

Sean O'Donnell
•I didn't know they had a mobile app! I'll download it and see if there's any additional info there.

Lucas Notre-Dame
•Yeah it's pretty basic but sometimes it shows different details about your claim status.

Honestly the whole unemployment system needs an overhaul. It shouldn't take weeks to get benefits when people are struggling to pay rent and buy groceries.

Just to give you some hope - my payment situation was similar and my first payment came through on a Wednesday morning in week 3. Woke up to a nice surprise in my checking account!

One last thing - if you do end up needing to contact Washington ESD about your claim, have all your information ready (SSN, claim number, dates of employment, etc.) so you don't waste time when you finally get through to someone.

•Good advice, I'll put together a little cheat sheet with all my info in case I need to call. Thanks everyone for all the help and reassurance!

•You're welcome! And seriously, if the phone system keeps giving you trouble, check out that Claimyr service. It made such a difference for me when I was in your situation.
