How long does it take to get paid unemployment in Washington - first timer questions
Filed my initial claim with Washington ESD two weeks ago after getting laid off from my retail job. My claim shows as approved but I haven't received any payments yet. I've been doing my weekly claims on time every Sunday. Is this normal? How long does it usually take to get your first unemployment check? I'm starting to stress about rent next week.

Usually takes 2-3 weeks for your first payment after filing. Since you're at 2 weeks and approved, you should see something soon. Make sure you're filing your weekly claims correctly - that's what triggers the payments.

•Yeah I've been doing them every Sunday like it says. Just nerve wracking waiting for that first check!

•the waiting is the worst part honestly, but once it starts coming its pretty reliable

If your claim is approved and you're filing weekly, first payment typically comes within 2-4 business days after your weekly claim is processed. Washington ESD processes weekly claims Monday-Wednesday usually. Check your account online to see if there's any pending issues.

•Thanks! I checked and don't see any issues listed. Hopefully it comes through this week then.

•Mine took exactly 3 weeks from filing to first payment. Had to call Washington ESD twice because I was freaking out but they said it was normal processing time.

I've been trying to reach Washington ESD for over a week about my payment delays. The phone lines are impossible - either busy signal or they hang up after an hour on hold. Anyone have luck getting through lately?

•I had the same problem until someone told me about Claimyr. It's a service that calls Washington ESD for you and gets you connected to an actual agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

•Interesting, never heard of that. Does it actually work? I'm desperate at this point.

•Yeah it worked for me. Got through to an agent in about 20 minutes when I couldn't get through on my own for days. They explained my payment delay was due to a verification issue I didn't even know about.

THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN! I've been waiting 6 WEEKS for my first payment and Washington ESD just keeps saying "processing." This is ridiculous - people need money to survive!

•6 weeks is definitely not normal. There's probably an issue with your claim that needs to be resolved. Have you been able to speak with anyone at Washington ESD?

Natasha Orlova
•NO BECAUSE THEY NEVER ANSWER THE PHONE!!! I've called hundreds of times.

•If you're at 6 weeks, there's likely an adjudication issue or identity verification hold. You really need to speak with an agent to find out what's causing the delay.

•That's reassuring, thanks. I'm hoping this week is the week!

•Yeah, I filed last month and got my first payment in about 2.5 weeks. Much faster than I expected.

Just want to add - make sure you're not missing any of your weekly claim certifications. If you miss even one week, it can delay everything. Washington ESD is strict about filing on time.

•Good point! I've been religious about doing them every Sunday. Set a reminder on my phone.

•Smart! I missed one week early on and it pushed my payment back another week while they sorted it out.

When I was on unemployment last year it took forever because I kept getting confused about the job search requirements. Make sure you're logging your work search activities correctly - that can hold up payments too.

Connor Gallagher
•Oh good reminder! I've been applying to jobs but haven't been logging them properly. Need to get on that.

Paolo Longo
•Yes, you need to complete 3 job search activities per week and log them in WorkSourceWA. Not doing this can disqualify you from benefits.

NeonNebula
•Exactly! I learned that the hard way. Had to appeal a disqualification because I wasn't documenting properly.

I remember when I first filed, I was so anxious about the money. But honestly once that first payment hits, the rest come pretty regularly. Just that initial wait that kills you.

•That's exactly how I'm feeling right now! The waiting is awful when you're worried about bills.

•Same boat here. Filed 10 days ago and checking my account obsessively lol

For what it's worth, I had to use Claimyr twice during my unemployment period. Once to check on my initial payment delay, and later when I had questions about my weekly benefit amount. Both times they got me through to Washington ESD agents who could actually help. Way better than spending whole days trying to call.

•How much does something like that cost? Sounds useful but I'm already tight on money.

•It's worth it if you really need to reach them. Much cheaper than missing work to spend all day calling. Plus if there's an issue delaying your benefits, getting it resolved faster saves you more money in the long run.

•You convinced me - going to try it. Can't keep wasting entire days on hold.

Just an update for anyone following - I got my first payment this morning! Took exactly 17 days from when I filed my initial claim. So hang in there OP, it's coming!

One thing to watch out for - Washington ESD sometimes has issues with their payment system on weekends. If you're expecting a payment, it usually hits Tuesday or Wednesday, not Monday.

Connor Gallagher
•Good to know! I'll stop checking my account obsessively on Mondays then.

•Yeah, learned this the hard way. Spent a whole Monday panicking that my payment didn't come, then it showed up Tuesday morning.

Does anyone know if the payment timeline is different if you're on standby status vs regular unemployment? My employer put me on temporary layoff.

Paolo Longo
•Standby status payments usually process the same way as regular UI. The main difference is you don't have to do job search activities while on standby, but you still file weekly claims.

•Thanks! That's what I thought but wanted to confirm. Still waiting on my first payment too.

Two weeks is pretty normal for first payment. I got worried around the 3 week mark and that's when I finally got through to Washington ESD using that Claimyr service someone mentioned. Agent confirmed everything was processing normally, just took time.

•The waiting game is brutal. I remember checking my bank account like 10 times a day.

Make sure your direct deposit info is correct in your Washington ESD account. A friend of mine had his payment delayed by a week because he had an old bank account on file.

Connor Gallagher
•Just double checked - all my banking info looks correct. Thanks for the reminder though!
