How long it takes to receive unemployment benefits from Washington ESD after filing?
Filed my initial claim with Washington ESD two weeks ago after getting laid off from my retail job. My claim shows as 'active' in my account but I haven't received any payments yet. I've been doing my weekly claims on time every Sunday. The website just says 'processing' for my payment status. Is this normal? How long does it usually take to get your first unemployment check? I'm starting to stress about rent next week.

It typically takes 2-3 weeks for your first payment after filing if there are no issues with your claim. Since you filed two weeks ago, you should see something soon. Make sure you're completing your weekly claims and job search activities.

•I've been doing the weekly claims religiously. Do you know if there's a way to check if there are any issues holding up my claim?

•Check your account for any 'To Do' items or messages. Sometimes Washington ESD needs additional verification documents.

took me almost a month to get my first check last year, but that was because they needed to verify my previous employer info. if everything is straightforward it should be faster

•Did you have to do anything special to speed it up or just wait it out?

•just had to wait unfortunately. called a bunch but could never get through to talk to anyone

The waiting period can be really stressful! I had the same anxiety when I first filed. If you're not seeing any red flags in your account and you've been doing everything correctly, it's probably just normal processing time. Washington ESD has to verify employment history with your former employer.

•That makes me feel a bit better. I guess I'm just panicking because bills don't wait for bureaucracy.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on your claim status, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually gets you connected to an agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting busy signals.

•Interesting, never heard of that. Is it legit? I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point.

•Yeah it's legitimate. I was skeptical too but it actually worked. Got through to an agent in about 20 minutes instead of calling for days.

•how much does something like that cost though?

THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN!!! Two weeks is nothing, I waited SIX WEEKS for my first payment and they never even told me why. Called hundreds of times, sent messages through the secure portal, NOTHING. This state doesn't care about unemployed people.

•Oh no, six weeks?? That's terrifying. What finally got it resolved?

•Eventually just showed up one day with back pay. No explanation, no apology, nothing.

•Six weeks is definitely not normal. There was probably an adjudication issue that got resolved.

Don't panic yet! Two weeks is still within the normal timeframe. I work in HR and deal with unemployment claims regularly. Washington ESD usually processes straightforward claims within 14-21 days. The fact that your claim shows as 'active' is a good sign.

•That's reassuring coming from someone who deals with this professionally. Should I be doing anything else besides the weekly claims?

•Just keep doing your weekly claims and job search activities. Make sure you're logging your job search contacts in WorkSource if required.

check if you have direct deposit set up correctly, that can delay things if there are banking issues

•Good point, I did set up direct deposit when I filed. The account info looks correct in my profile.

Same boat here! Filed three weeks ago and still waiting. At least I'm not alone in this frustrating process.

•Glad I'm not the only one, but sorry you're dealing with this too. Have you tried calling at all?

•Tried calling once but gave up after being on hold for 2 hours and then getting disconnected.

For what it's worth, Washington ESD has been pretty consistent with their processing times lately. Most people I know have been getting their first payment within 2-3 weeks if there are no complications. Hang in there!

•Thanks for the encouragement. I guess I just need to be patient and hope for the best.

if you really need to talk to someone about your claim status, that claimyr thing actually worked for my brother last month. he was stuck in some kind of verification loop and they helped him get through to figure out what was needed

•Good to hear another success story about that service. Might have to try it if I don't hear anything by next week.

•Yeah, it's especially helpful when you need to check on specific claim issues like verification holds or adjudication status.

hang in there! the waiting is the worst part but it does come through eventually

•Thanks, trying to stay positive but it's hard when you're watching your bank account dwindle.

One thing to remember is that when your first payment does come through, it should include back pay from your waiting week. So you'll get a larger payment that covers multiple weeks.

Keisha Jackson
•Oh really? I didn't know about the back pay aspect. That's actually pretty helpful to know.

•Yes, Washington eliminated the waiting week requirement, so you get paid for that first week when your benefits start flowing.

just make sure you keep doing those weekly claims even if you havent gotten paid yet. missing one can mess up your whole timeline

Keisha Jackson
•Definitely doing that. Set a reminder on my phone for every Sunday morning.

I remember when I first filed, I was checking my account like 10 times a day hoping to see a payment. The anxiety is real! But once it starts, it's pretty reliable.

•That's exactly what I'm doing! Obsessively checking my account and bank balance. Good to know it gets better.

•Yeah, that first payment is like winning the lottery when you're stressed about money. You'll get there!

Final advice: if you hit the three-week mark with no payment and no communication from Washington ESD, that's when I'd recommend reaching out directly to check if there are any issues with your claim.

•Good benchmark to have. I'll give it one more week and then start making some calls or try that Claimyr service.

•That's a smart approach. Three weeks is definitely when you want to investigate further rather than just waiting indefinitely.

also make sure your mailing address is correct in case they need to send any paperwork. sometimes they mail stuff instead of putting it in your online account

Keisha Jackson
•Good point, I'll double check my address info. Don't want to miss anything important in the mail.

The whole process is designed to be as stressful as possible I swear. But you're doing everything right by staying on top of the weekly claims.

Quick clarification for anyone reading this thread: Washington ESD's current processing time for initial claims is typically 14-21 business days for straightforward cases. Complications like identity verification, wage disputes, or employment eligibility issues can extend this timeline significantly.
