How long does it take for unemployment benefits to kick in with Washington ESD?
I just filed my initial unemployment claim with Washington ESD last Friday and I'm wondering how long it typically takes for benefits to actually start coming in? I know there's a waiting week but I'm not sure if that means one week or if there are other delays I should expect. My last job ended unexpectedly and I need to plan my budget carefully. Has anyone gone through this recently? What should I realistically expect for timing?

It usually takes about 2-3 weeks after you file your initial claim, assuming there are no issues with your application. The waiting week is just one week where you don't get paid, but you still need to file your weekly claim during that time.

•Thanks! So I should keep filing weekly claims even during the waiting week? I wasn't sure about that part.

•Yes absolutely! You have to file every week or you could lose benefits. Don't skip any weeks even if you're not getting paid yet.

The timeline really depends on whether your claim goes into adjudication or not. Mine was approved pretty quickly but my friend's took over a month because they had to verify some employment details.

•What causes a claim to go into adjudication? I'm worried mine might get delayed.

•Usually it's things like job separation issues, conflicting information from your employer, or if you worked in multiple states. Sometimes it's random verification checks too.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on your claim status, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me get connected to an actual agent. It's at claimyr.com and they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on.

•How much does something like that cost? Seems like we shouldn't have to pay extra just to talk to Washington ESD.

•I was frustrated about that too initially, but honestly it was worth it to finally get answers about my claim. The alternative was spending days trying to get through on my own.

•I might look into that if my claim gets stuck. Right now I'm just hoping everything goes smoothly.

The whole system is so slow and frustrating. They make you jump through hoops and then take forever to process anything. I've been waiting 3 weeks and still nothing.

•That sucks! Have you tried calling them to see what's going on with your claim?

•Ha! Good luck getting through. I've tried probably 50 times and either get busy signal or they hang up after being on hold for an hour.

Mine took exactly 10 business days from filing to first payment. Filed on a Tuesday, got my first deposit two weeks later on a Friday. But I had a pretty straightforward layoff situation.

•That's reassuring! Mine was a layoff too so hopefully it's similar timing.

•Yeah just make sure you're filing your weekly claims on time and doing your job search activities. They're pretty strict about that stuff.

What if you made a mistake on your initial application? I think I might have put the wrong end date for my last job and I'm worried it's going to mess everything up.

•You can usually correct minor errors by calling Washington ESD, but it might delay your claim while they sort it out. Better to fix it sooner rather than later.

•Ugh, this is exactly what I was afraid of. Guess I'll try calling them tomorrow.

The waiting week is such BS. Like we're not already stressed enough about losing our jobs, now they make us wait an extra week for benefits we've been paying into.

•I totally agree! It's like they're punishing us for being unemployed.

•I think it's supposed to prevent fraud or something, but yeah it definitely makes things harder when you're already struggling financially.

Pro tip: set up direct deposit if you haven't already. The debit card option can take longer and sometimes has issues. Direct deposit is usually more reliable.

•Good point! I did set up direct deposit but wasn't sure if that was the faster option.

Emma Wilson
•Yeah definitely. Plus with direct deposit you don't have to worry about the card getting lost in the mail or having fee issues.

Another thing about Claimyr - it's really helpful if your claim gets stuck in adjudication and you need to actually talk to someone to find out what documents they need. The automated system doesn't tell you much.

•Honestly at this point I'm willing to try anything. Three weeks of calling and getting nowhere is driving me crazy.

•That's exactly why I ended up using it. Sometimes you just need to talk to a real person to get answers.

Make sure you're keeping track of all your job search activities from day one. Even during the waiting week you need to be looking for work and documenting it.

•How many job search activities do you need per week? I've been applying to jobs but wasn't sure about the specific requirements.

Chloe Taylor
•I think it's 3 per week but check your account to be sure. And keep detailed records of what you did, when, and where.

The timing also depends on what day of the week you file your weekly claim. I always file mine on Sunday morning and usually get paid by Wednesday.

•Same here! Sunday filing seems to be the most reliable for getting paid mid-week.

•Good to know! I'll make sure to file early in the week going forward.

honestly the whole system is set up to discourage people from using it. between the waiting week and all the hoops they make you jump through, I bet a lot of people just give up

•That's probably the point unfortunately. Make it as difficult as possible so fewer people actually get benefits.

Javier Gomez
•While the system definitely has issues, don't let frustration stop you from getting benefits you're entitled to. Just be persistent.

Has anyone else noticed that the Washington ESD website is super slow and sometimes crashes when you're trying to file your weekly claim?

Diego Flores
•Yes! Especially on Sunday evenings when everyone is trying to file at once. I learned to file early Sunday morning instead.

Freya Larsen
•That makes sense. I was trying Sunday night and kept getting error messages.

For what it's worth, my claim took about 2.5 weeks from filing to first payment. Had one small hiccup where they needed to verify my identity but that only delayed things by a few days.

NebulaNinja
•How did they verify your identity? Did you have to send documents or something?

Sean Murphy
•Yeah I had to upload a copy of my driver's license and social security card through their secure portal. Pretty straightforward once I figured out how to do it.

The most important thing is to not miss any weekly certifications, even if you haven't been paid yet. Missing even one week can really mess up your claim.

NebulaNinja
•What happens if you accidentally miss a week? Can you make it up?
0 coins
StarStrider
•You can sometimes file late but it's a hassle and might require calling Washington ESD to sort it out. Better to just set a reminder and never miss.

Just wanted to update - I used Claimyr again last week when I had questions about my job search requirements and was able to get through to someone in about 15 minutes. Way better than the hours I was spending before.

•Ok you've convinced me to check it out. I'm tired of not being able to get answers about my claim.

•Same, I'm going to look into it today. This waiting around with no information is making me anxious.

One more tip - if you're doing gig work or part-time work while on unemployment, make sure you report ALL of it on your weekly claims. Even small amounts need to be reported.

NebulaNinja
•Good point! I wasn't planning to do any side work but it's good to know for the future.

•Yeah they can find out about unreported income and it can cause major problems with your claim, including having to pay everything back.

my experience was about 3 weeks total but I filed right after a holiday which might have slowed things down. Generally though if your claim is straightforward you should see money within 2-3 weeks

NebulaNinja
•That seems to be the consensus - 2-3 weeks for most people. Thanks everyone for all the helpful info!

•No problem! Just remember to stay on top of your weekly claims and job search requirements and you should be fine.

The key is to be patient but also stay informed about what's happening with your claim. Check your account regularly and don't hesitate to call if something seems off.

Just want to echo what others have said about the importance of filing every week. I know someone who missed two weeks thinking it didn't matter since she wasn't getting paid yet, and it created a huge mess.
