How long does it take to get first unemployment check after filing with Washington ESD?
I just filed my initial unemployment claim with Washington ESD last Tuesday and I'm wondering how long it typically takes to receive your first payment? I know you have to wait one week but does that mean I'll get paid this coming week or is there additional processing time? My previous job ended two weeks ago and I'm starting to stress about my bills. Anyone know the usual timeline for first payments once your claim is approved?

Usually takes about 2-3 weeks total from when you first file. You have the one week waiting period plus time for them to process everything. Make sure you're filing your weekly claims every week even during the waiting period!

•Thanks! I did file my first weekly claim this past Sunday. Should I keep filing even if I haven't heard anything back about my initial claim being approved?

•Yes definitely keep filing weekly. If you miss a week you can lose benefits for that period even if your claim gets approved later.

The waiting week is always the first compensable week after you file. So if you filed last Tuesday, your waiting week would be the week ending this Sunday. Assuming your claim gets approved without any issues, you'd potentially see payment for the week after that. But it can take longer if there are any flags on your account that need review.

•What kind of flags would cause delays? I'm worried because I had some part-time work mixed in with my main job during my last few weeks of employment.

•That could potentially trigger a review since they need to verify your wages and work history. It's pretty common though, shouldn't be a major delay if everything checks out.

I've been through this process a few times and honestly the hardest part is getting through to talk to someone at Washington ESD if there are any issues with your claim. Their phone lines are constantly busy. I discovered Claimyr recently which has been a lifesaver - it's a service that helps you get through to ESD agents. You can check it out at claimyr.com and they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already strapped for cash waiting for my unemployment to kick in.

•It's definitely worth it if you're stuck and need to talk to someone. Way better than spending hours trying to call and getting nowhere.

•Never heard of this before but might be useful to know about. The ESD phone system is absolutely terrible.

took me almost 4 weeks to get my first check last year and that was with no complications on my claim. the system is just slow. make sure you have your job search activities logged because they'll ask for that info

•Four weeks?? That's longer than what others are saying. Were there specific issues with your claim or just normal processing delays?

•no issues just took forever. i think it was around christmas time though so maybe that made it slower. also had to call them to confirm some employment dates

The key thing to remember is that even if your first payment takes a while, you'll get paid retroactively for all the weeks you were eligible (minus the waiting week). So if it takes 3 weeks to process but you were eligible from week 1, you'd get 2 weeks worth of payments when it finally comes through.

•That's reassuring to know! I was worried I'd lose those weeks if the processing took too long.

•Exactly, as long as you keep filing your weekly claims you won't lose anything. The system tracks everything.

I'm in a similar situation but filed 3 weeks ago and still haven't seen anything. My claim status just says 'under review' and I can't get through to anyone on the phone. Getting really frustrated with this whole process.

•That's exactly the kind of situation where Claimyr helps. When your claim is stuck in review, you really need to talk to an actual person to find out what's holding it up.

•I might have to look into that. I've tried calling probably 50 times over the past week and either get a busy signal or get disconnected after waiting on hold.

•Same here! The phone system is a nightmare. I've been trying for weeks to get through.

For what it's worth, I filed in early January and got my first payment exactly 14 days later. No complications though - straightforward layoff situation with all my paperwork in order. The timeline really depends on your specific circumstances.

•That gives me hope! My situation is pretty straightforward too - company downsizing, clean layoff with proper notice.

•That's a good timeline. I think the horror stories you hear are usually when there are complications or people don't file their weekly claims properly.

MAKE SURE YOU FILE EVERY SINGLE WEEKLY CLAIM!!! I cannot stress this enough. I missed one week early on thinking it didn't matter and it screwed up my whole timeline. Had to call and get it fixed and it delayed everything by another two weeks.

•Good to know! I've been religious about filing every Sunday since I started. Even filed one for the week I was still technically employed but got laid off mid-week.

•Perfect, that's exactly what you should do. Better to over-report than miss anything.

The waiting period is honestly the worst part psychologically. You're already stressed about losing your job and then you have to wait even longer for any financial relief. But once it kicks in, the payments are pretty reliable if you keep up with the weekly filings.

•Yeah the waiting is definitely stressful. I'm trying to be patient but bills don't wait unfortunately.

•I feel you on that. Had to ask family for help with rent while waiting for my first check. It's rough but temporary.

One thing that might speed up your processing - make sure all your employer information is accurate on your claim. I had a small mistake in one of my previous employer's addresses and it held up my claim for an extra week while they verified everything.

•I double-checked everything when I filed but now you're making me second-guess myself. Is there a way to review what I submitted?

•You should be able to see your claim details when you log into your ESD account. Worth checking to make sure everything looks right.

Another option for getting help is trying to use that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. I used it last month when my claim got stuck and it actually worked - got connected to an ESD representative within a few hours instead of spending days trying the regular phone lines.

•Yes, turned out there was just a simple verification they needed that I could handle right over the phone. Would have saved me weeks of waiting if I'd known about it sooner.

From my experience filing in Washington state, the 2-3 week timeline is pretty accurate for straightforward cases. The biggest variable is whether you need to talk to someone for verification or if your claim gets flagged for any reason. Keep filing weekly and try to be patient - it will come through.

Just want to add - if you're worried about paying bills while waiting, see if any of your creditors offer hardship programs. Many utilities and credit card companies will work with you if you explain you're waiting for unemployment benefits to start.

Natalia Stone
•That's a good idea I hadn't thought of. I'll reach out to my utility company and see what options they have.

btw make sure you're doing your job search requirements too. they can ask for that info at any time and if you don't have it documented you could lose benefits even if everything else is in order

•I've been applying to jobs but haven't been tracking it formally. What exactly do I need to document?

Selena Bautista
•You need to log your job search activities in WorkSource WA. Three qualified job search activities per week minimum. Keep detailed records of what you applied for and when.

One more thing - direct deposit usually takes a few days to set up initially, so even once your payment is approved it might take an extra 2-3 business days to hit your account if you haven't used ESD before. Paper checks take even longer.

Natalia Stone
•I did set up direct deposit when I filed my claim, so hopefully that will speed things up once payments start.

•Good thinking. Direct deposit is definitely the way to go.

Keep your chin up! I know the waiting is stressful but you'll get through it. The unemployment system in Washington works, it's just not fast. Focus on your job search and taking care of yourself while you wait for the benefits to kick in.
