How long after you apply for unemployment do you get paid Washington ESD?

Just submitted my initial unemployment claim through the Washington ESD website yesterday and I'm wondering when I can expect to actually receive my first payment. I know I have to file weekly claims but I'm confused about the timeline. Do they pay you for the waiting week or do I have to wait an extra week before getting anything? My last job ended two weeks ago and I'm already behind on rent. Anyone know how long Washington ESD typically takes to process new claims and send out payments?

The waiting week was eliminated in Washington so you don't have to worry about that anymore. Once your claim is approved, you'll get paid for all eligible weeks. But first your claim has to go through the adjudication process which can take anywhere from 1-6 weeks depending on complexity.

That's a relief about the waiting week! Do you know what makes a claim more complex during adjudication?

0 coins

Things like job separation issues, wage disputes, or if you worked for multiple employers can slow things down. Also if Washington ESD needs to verify your identity or work history.

ugh been waiting 3 weeks for my claim to get approved, this is ridiculous. called washington esd like 50 times and cant get through to anyone

Have you tried using Claimyr? It's a service that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. I used it last month when my claim was stuck in adjudication for weeks. Check out claimyr.com - they even have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

If your claim gets approved without issues, payments usually start 2-3 weeks after you file. You have to file your weekly claims every week even while waiting for approval. Once approved, you'll get back pay for all the weeks you were eligible. Make sure you're doing your job search activities too - Washington ESD requires 3 job contacts per week.

Good to know about the job search requirement. Where do I log those contacts?

0 coins

You can use WorkSourceWA.com to track your job search activities, or keep your own log. Washington ESD might audit your job search so keep good records.

0 coins

Wait I thought it was 2 job contacts per week not 3?

0 coins

It's 3 contacts per week for most people, but it can vary based on your situation. Check your weekly claim filing instructions for your specific requirements.

My claim took 5 weeks to get approved because I quit my job (had to quit due to unsafe working conditions) and they had to investigate. Even with a valid reason, quit claims take longer than layoff claims. If you were laid off or fired through no fault of your own, it should be faster.

0 coins

I was laid off due to company downsizing so hopefully that helps speed things up.

0 coins

Yeah that should be pretty straightforward then. Layoffs due to lack of work are usually approved quickly.

HONESTLY the washington esd system is so slow and outdated!! I filed 4 weeks ago and still no payment. They say my claim is 'under review' but won't tell me what they're reviewing. This is my rent money we're talking about!

0 coins

That's frustrating but unfortunately normal. The adjudication process can take time especially if they need to contact your former employer to verify the separation reason.

If you need to talk to someone at Washington ESD about your claim status, try Claimyr. I mentioned it earlier - they help you get through to actual agents instead of waiting on hold forever. Really helped me get answers about my delayed claim.

0 coins

just a heads up - make sure you set up direct deposit if you haven't already. The debit card they send takes forever and has fees. Direct deposit is way faster once payments start

0 coins

Thanks for the tip! I can set that up in my Washington ESD account right?

0 coins

yeah go to your payment options in the secure access washington portal

Mine took exactly 2 weeks from filing to first payment but that was before COVID when things moved faster. Now with the backlog it seems like everything takes longer. Just keep filing your weekly claims even if nothing's happening - you don't want to miss out on benefits.

0 coins

Good advice about filing weekly claims. I wasn't sure if I should keep doing that while waiting for approval.

0 coins

Definitely keep filing! If you miss a weekly claim you could lose benefits for that week even if you get approved later.

UPDATE: finally got through to washington esd after using that claimyr thing someone mentioned. agent said my claim was held up because they needed additional wage information from one of my previous employers. wish they had told me that 3 weeks ago instead of just saying 'under review

0 coins

Glad Claimyr worked for you! It's so much better than trying to call on your own. At least now you know what's going on with your claim.

0 coins

That's exactly what I'm worried about - some hidden issue holding up my claim that I don't know about.

0 coins

yeah definitely try to get through to someone if you can, the online status doesn't tell you much

0 coins

For what it's worth, I got my first payment exactly 3 weeks after filing. No issues with my claim but it still took that long for processing. Make sure you have your banking info ready for direct deposit setup once you get approved.

0 coins

3 weeks seems to be pretty typical from what everyone's saying. I'll try to be patient.

0 coins

The timeline really depends on your specific situation. Simple layoffs usually process in 2-3 weeks. If there are any complications (job separation disputes, identity verification issues, wage discrepancies) it can take much longer. Washington ESD is required to make a determination within a reasonable time but they don't define what 'reasonable' means.

0 coins

That's helpful context. Hopefully my straightforward layoff situation won't have complications.

0 coins

Since you mentioned it was a company downsizing layoff, that should be pretty clean. Just make sure all your employer information is accurate on your application.

0 coins

been there - the waiting is the worst part especially when you need the money NOW. Just remember to keep filing weekly and doing job searches. Once it gets approved the back pay makes up for the wait. hang in there!

0 coins

Thanks for the encouragement! The back pay aspect definitely helps knowing I won't lose those weeks.

0 coins

Another thing to watch for - if your claim is taking longer than 4 weeks, you might want to check if Washington ESD sent you any letters or notices. Sometimes they mail requests for additional information but people miss them. Check your secure messages in your ESD account too.

0 coins

Good point about checking for messages. I'll make sure to log in regularly to check for any requests.

0 coins

Yeah they don't always do a good job of notifying you when they need something. The secure messaging system in your account is where they'll usually contact you first.

0 coins

honestly if I had known about claimyr when I first applied I would have saved myself weeks of stress. spent so many hours trying to call washington esd and getting nowhere. finally used the service and got through same day. highly recommend for anyone stuck waiting

0 coins

Seems like a lot of people have had success with that service. I'll keep it in mind if I run into issues.

0 coins

Same here - wish I'd known about it sooner. The phone system at Washington ESD is just impossible to navigate on your own.

0 coins

just to add to what others said - even after your claim is approved, the first payment can take a few extra days to actually hit your account. so if you get approved on a friday, don't expect money until the following week. learned that the hard way lol

0 coins

Thanks for the heads up about the payment timing. Every detail helps with planning.

0 coins

The whole process is frustrating but unfortunately necessary. Washington ESD has to verify everything to prevent fraud. My advice is to be patient but also proactive - if it's been more than 3 weeks with no updates, try to get through to someone to check on status. Don't just wait indefinitely.

0 coins

That's good advice about being proactive. I'll give it a couple more weeks then try to get some answers if nothing happens.

0 coins

Exactly. 3-4 weeks is normal but after that you want to make sure nothing's stuck or missing.

0 coins

One more tip - make sure your address is correct in your ESD account. If they try to mail you anything and it gets returned, it can delay your claim. Also keep your phone number updated in case they need to call you.

0 coins

Good catch - I did move recently so I'll double check my address is current.

0 coins

Yeah that's a common issue that people don't think about until it causes problems.

0 coins

The silver lining is that once you get approved and start receiving payments, the weekly process is pretty smooth. Filing weekly claims only takes a few minutes each week and payments are usually direct deposited within 2-3 days.

0 coins

That's reassuring to know the ongoing process is easier than the initial approval.

0 coins

Bottom line - 2-4 weeks is typical for straightforward claims, longer if there are complications. Keep filing weekly, keep looking for work, and be ready to provide additional information if they ask. The system is slow but it works eventually. Good luck!

Thanks everyone for all the helpful info! Feeling much better prepared for what to expect now.
