How long does it take to get the first unemployment check from Washington ESD?
I just filed my initial unemployment claim with Washington ESD last week and I'm wondering how long it typically takes to receive your first payment? I know I have to file weekly claims but I'm not sure when I should expect to actually see money in my account. My rent is due in two weeks and I'm starting to stress about timing. Has anyone gone through this recently and can share their experience?

It usually takes about 2-3 weeks from when you file your initial claim to get your first payment, assuming there are no issues with your claim. You have to wait one week (waiting week) and then file weekly claims for the weeks you want to claim benefits.

•Thanks! So I should expect to wait about 3 weeks total before seeing any money?

•Yes, that's about right if everything goes smoothly with your claim processing.

Mine took exactly 3 weeks. Filed on a Monday, got my first payment 3 weeks later. Make sure you're filing your weekly claims every week even during the waiting period - that's important.

•Good to know about filing weekly claims during the waiting week. I wasn't sure about that part.

•Yeah, don't skip any weeks or it can mess up your claim timeline.

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD to check on your claim status, I found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through their phone lines. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Really helped me when I was stuck in the system.

•That's interesting. Have you actually used it? I've been trying to call Washington ESD but can never get through.

•Yeah, used it twice when I had claim issues. Much better than sitting on hold for hours or getting hung up on.

•How much does something like that cost though?

The timing can vary a lot depending on if your claim needs adjudication. If Washington ESD needs to verify your employment history or there are any red flags, it could take weeks longer.

•What kind of things would trigger adjudication? I'm worried something might hold up my claim.

•Things like being fired, quitting your job, having multiple employers, or discrepancies in your wage history can all trigger manual review.

ugh I'm going on 5 weeks and still haven't gotten anything... my claim just says pending and I can't get through to anyone at Washington ESD to find out what's wrong

•Oh no, that's exactly what I'm worried about! Have you tried any other ways to contact them?

•I've tried everything - calling, messaging through the portal, even went to the WorkSource office but they can't help with individual claims

•This is exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier. When you're stuck like this for weeks, sometimes you need help getting through to an actual person who can look at your account.

Just want to add - make sure you have direct deposit set up in your account. Paper checks take even longer to arrive.

Aisha Mohammed
•Good point! I did set up direct deposit when I filed my initial claim.

Also remember that your first payment will be for the week after your waiting week. So if you filed this week, you'll have a waiting week, then the first week you can claim benefits, then you'll get paid for that week the following week.

Aisha Mohammed
•That makes sense. So there's definitely going to be a delay no matter what.

•Yeah, it's frustrating but that's just how the system works. The waiting week is required by law.

I think I waited about 4 weeks for my first payment but that was because I had to do the whole ID verification thing. Such a pain.

Aisha Mohammed
•ID verification? Is that something everyone has to do?
0 coins
Andre Dupont
•Not everyone, but Washington ESD has been doing more identity verification lately to prevent fraud. If they flag your account you have to upload documents.

Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even if you don't see any payments yet. I made the mistake of stopping when I didn't get paid right away and it screwed up my whole claim.

Aisha Mohammed
•That's good advice. I'll make sure to keep filing every week no matter what.

•Yeah, consistency is key with Washington ESD. Don't give them any reason to think you're not actively claiming.

If you need to speed things up and actually talk to someone at Washington ESD, that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier is legit. I was skeptical at first but it really does help you get through to agents.

•I might have to look into that if my claim takes too long. The phone system is impossible.

Zoe Papadakis
•Yeah, the regular phone system is a nightmare. I wasted so many hours before finding out about services like that.

Just be patient - I know it's stressful when you need the money but most claims do get processed eventually. The system is just slow.

•I'm trying to be patient but bills don't wait, you know?

•I totally understand. Maybe look into local food banks or assistance programs while you wait for your first payment.

One more thing - make sure you're doing your job search activities from day one. Even though you won't get paid right away, Washington ESD expects you to be looking for work immediately.

Aisha Mohammed
•How many job search activities do I need to do each week?
0 coins
Ethan Campbell
•It's usually 3 job search activities per week, but check your requirements in your account because it can vary based on your situation.

My claim went through in exactly 2 weeks and 3 days. Filed on a Wednesday, got my first payment the following Wednesday. But I had a pretty straightforward layoff situation.

Aisha Mohammed
•That gives me hope! Mine should be straightforward too - just a layoff due to company downsizing.

Update - I finally got through to Washington ESD using that Claimyr thing and found out my claim was stuck because of a stupid paperwork issue. They fixed it while I was on the phone and I should get my payments next week. Wish I had known about this service weeks ago!

•That's great news! Good to know there are options when you get stuck.

•See, I told you that service was legit. Sometimes you just need to get an actual person on the phone who can fix things.

just want to say that the first payment is always the hardest because you don't know what to expect. After that it's usually pretty regular if you keep filing your weekly claims on time

•Thanks for the reassurance! I just need to get through these first few weeks.

Pro tip: set up account alerts in your Washington ESD account so you get notified when payments are processed. Helps with the anxiety of not knowing what's happening.
0 coins
Aisha Mohammed
•I didn't know you could do that. I'll set that up right now.

Jamal Edwards
•Yeah, it's in the settings section. Really helps to know when something is happening with your claim.

The waiting period is rough but hang in there. I remember checking my bank account every day waiting for that first payment. It will come!

Aisha Mohammed
•That's exactly what I'm doing! Checking my account multiple times a day like it's going to magically appear.

Final thought - if you run into any issues or your claim takes longer than expected, don't wait weeks like some people do. Get help sooner rather than later. Whether that's through Claimyr or finding another way to reach Washington ESD, the longer you wait the harder it gets to fix problems.
0 coins
Aisha Mohammed
•That's really good advice. I'll keep that in mind if things don't progress as expected.

NightOwl42
•Agreed. I waited 6 weeks before getting help and it turned out to be something simple that could have been fixed in week 2.

Hope everything works out for you! The unemployment system is frustrating but most people do eventually get their benefits. Just stay on top of your weekly claims and be persistent if you run into problems.
