How long does it take to get your first payment from Washington ESD unemployment?

I just filed my first claim with Washington ESD last week and I'm wondering how long it typically takes to receive your first unemployment payment? I know I have to file weekly claims but I'm not sure when the money actually shows up. My rent is due next week and I'm getting anxious about the timing. Has anyone recently gone through this process and can give me a realistic timeline?

It depends on if your claim goes into adjudication or not. If everything is straightforward, you should get your first payment about 2-3 weeks after filing, assuming you file your weekly claims on time. But if there are any issues with your claim, it can take much longer.

What would cause it to go into adjudication? I left my job because my hours were cut to almost nothing, so I'm hoping that's not an issue.

0 coins

That might actually trigger a review since you weren't technically laid off. They'll want to verify if you meet the criteria for quitting with good cause. It's not automatic denial, but it could add a few weeks to your wait time.

I filed 3 weeks ago and still haven't gotten anything! My claim is showing as 'pending' and I can't get through to anyone at Washington ESD. This is so frustrating.

0 coins

Have you been filing your weekly claims? Even if your initial claim is pending, you still need to keep filing weekly to get paid once it's approved.

0 coins

Yes I've been filing every week. I just don't understand why it's taking so long.

I had the same issue a few months ago. I ended up using this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. It's at claimyr.com and they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. It was honestly the only way I could get someone on the phone to check my claim status.

Usually 2-3 weeks is normal but it can vary. Make sure you're doing your job search activities and logging them because they can ask for that information at any time.

0 coins

How many job searches do I need to do per week? I thought I read somewhere it was 3 but I'm not sure.

0 coins

It's 3 job search activities per week minimum. You can do more if you want but that's the requirement to stay eligible.

0 coins

The washington esd website says it can take up to 3 weeks for first payment but in my experience its usually closer to 2 weeks if there are no issues with your claim

0 coins

That's helpful, thank you. I guess I just need to be patient and keep filing my weekly claims.

0 coins

I'm going through the same thing right now. Filed 2 weeks ago and my first payment is supposed to be processed this week according to my claim summary. The waiting is the worst part!

0 coins

At least you can see when it's supposed to be processed. I don't see any payment information on my account yet.

0 coins

That probably means your claim is still being reviewed. Once it's approved you'll see the payment dates.

0 coins

THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN. I've been waiting 6 weeks for my first payment and nobody at Washington ESD will give me a straight answer about what's going on. They just keep saying 'it's being reviewed' every time I call.

0 coins

That's terrible! Have you tried contacting your state representative? Sometimes they can help push things along.

0 coins

I hadn't thought of that. I'm desperate at this point so I'll try anything.

0 coins

Before you go that route, you might want to try Claimyr again. I know I mentioned it earlier but they really helped me get through to someone who could actually check my claim status instead of just giving me the runaround.

Mine took exactly 19 days from when I filed to when I got my first direct deposit. I think it would have been faster but my employer contested my claim initially.

0 coins

Did you have to do anything special when your employer contested it?

0 coins

I had to provide documentation about why I left and then wait for them to make a decision. It added about a week to the process.

0 coins

just keep filing ur weekly claims thats the most important thing even if u dont get paid right away

0 coins

Yeah I'm definitely going to keep doing that. I don't want to mess anything up.

0 coins

I remember when I first filed, I was so worried about the money not coming through. The key thing is making sure you have all your information correct on your initial application. Any discrepancies can cause delays.

0 coins

I think I filled everything out correctly but now I'm second-guessing myself. Is there a way to check or update information after you've already filed?

0 coins

You can call Washington ESD to make corrections but it's sometimes easier said than done getting through to someone.

Pro tip: if you're really struggling to get through to Washington ESD, try calling right when they open at 8am or during lunch time around noon. Those seem to be the best times.

0 coins

I've tried calling at 8am and still can't get through. The phone system is overwhelmed.

0 coins

Yeah it's pretty bad. That's why some people use services like Claimyr to help them get through.

0 coins

Does anyone know if the first payment includes back pay from when you first filed? Or do you only get paid from the week you're approved?

0 coins

You get back pay from your first eligible week, but only for the weeks you actually filed weekly claims. If you forgot to file for a week, you won't get paid for that week.

0 coins

Good to know! I've been filing every week so I should be covered.

0 coins

I work at a temp agency and I see people dealing with this all the time. The biggest thing that slows down first payments is when people don't report their work history accurately or they have issues with their Social Security number verification.

0 coins

That makes sense. I think my information is all correct but I guess I'll find out.

0 coins

Make sure you're checking your messages in your Washington ESD online account. Sometimes they'll request additional information and if you don't respond quickly it can delay your claim.

0 coins

I check it every day but haven't gotten any messages yet. Hopefully that means everything is okay.

0 coins

From what I've seen, most people get their first payment within 2-3 weeks if there are no complications. But if you have any issues with your claim, it can stretch out to 6-8 weeks or even longer.

0 coins

I really hope I don't have any complications. I need this money soon.

0 coins

Just stay on top of it. If you don't hear anything by week 3, definitely try to contact them to check on your claim status.

0 coins

The worst part is not knowing what's happening with your claim. I wish Washington ESD would give more specific updates about where you are in the process.

0 coins

Exactly! The uncertainty is almost worse than the wait itself.

0 coins

I got my first payment on day 14 after filing. No issues with my claim and I had direct deposit set up. The key is just being patient and making sure you file your weekly claims on time.

0 coins

That gives me hope! I set up direct deposit too so hopefully that will speed things up.

0 coins

If you're really struggling financially while waiting, see if you qualify for any emergency assistance programs in your area. Food banks, utility assistance, etc. It can help bridge the gap.

0 coins

That's a good idea. I hadn't thought about looking into other assistance programs.

0 coins

Been there! The waiting is stressful but most people do get their first payment within a few weeks. Just keep filing your weekly claims and try not to worry too much about things you can't control.

0 coins

Thanks for the encouragement. I'll try to stay positive and just focus on doing what I need to do.

0 coins

UPDATE: I just wanted to circle back and let everyone know I got my first payment today! It was exactly 18 days from when I filed my initial claim. Thanks everyone for the advice and reassurance.

0 coins

Congrats! That's great news and gives hope to others waiting.

0 coins

That's awesome! I'm still waiting but this gives me hope that mine will come through soon too.
